En janvier 1874, Grieg collabore avec le dramaturge Henrik Ibsen, lui offrant la composition de la musique d'accompagnement de sa pièce de théâtre Peer Gynt. Ayant besoin d'argent, il accepte ce travail qu'il mène avec peine, mais qui doit à son insu assurer une grande partie de sa gloire internationale. L'oeuvre est jouée sous les feux de la rampe à Oslo le 24 février 1876. Sur ses 23 numéros qu'il compose, il en choisit quatre en 1888, pour une première suite d'orchestre, et cinq en 1891 pour une seconde, mais la dernière pièce est vite abandonnée.
La danse d'Anitra représente le quatrième de cette pièce. Elle est basée sur un Tempo de mazurka en la mineur à 3/4. Son histoire se déroule en Afrique du Nord. Le héros, Peer Gynt est pris pour un prophète. Il est invité par le roi et la belle Anitra danse pour le séduire.
La composition est basée sur le modèle de la danse populaire appelée « Springar ». Envoûtante par son mouvement obsessionnel et raffiné, cette danse nous transporte dans un univers merveilleux, celui du conte de fées musicalement scandinave.
