Three Autumn Sketches after a Watercolor by Maria Willscher (2017) are dedicated to Hans-Peter Bahr. The music is inspired by a watercolor painting by Maria (Neumann) Willscher (1922-1998) entitled Herbststimmung. The three movements explore moods and colors of autumn as reflected in the painting. In the first movement, Herbststimmung (Autumn Mood), a musical line falls under gentle undulation. A central section is a wistful chorale. The second movement, Herbstfarben (Autumn Colors), reflects on the subtle variety and gradations of autumn colors with constantly shifting armonic colors. The final movement, Sonnenuntergang (Sunset), is inspired by the serenely beautiful colors of an autumn sunset, imagining the sun's departing rays illuminating the autumn landscape. Instrumentation: Organ Duration: 16' Composed: 2017 Published by: Zimbel Press.

Barbara Heller's duet 'Herbstmusik' [Autumnal Music] for cello and piano is a short piece of 5-6 minutes' duration which is as vibrant and colourful as the season itself and a welcome addition to the repertoire for this combination of instruments. Graded at intermediate level, it is also a suitable extension to the contemporary repertoire for advanced young cellists and for playing in youth music competitions (age range 11-16).This piece only requires players to use the first four positions plus harmonics. Fingerings and bowings were added in collaboration with the cellist Katharina Deserno from Cologne. An improvised solo cello cadenza may be added, starting from the Bb with fermata in bar 88. This might draw on the musical material in the preceding bars 85-88, possibly making use of motifs and playing techniques already featured in the piece, such as 'col legno' or 'pizzicato' - but no limits should be placed upon the performer's imagination.

According to Rautavaara The name of the work is a quotation from the libretto of my opera The House of the Sun: . . .like a butterfly in a dark autumn garden. . .. The motif to which these words are sung is the theme for the variations in the first movement. Their texture gradually grows and becomes denser. Following on without a break is a slow, poetic movement of even rhythms and dynamics. The quick, lively finale begins giocoso e leggiero. But autumn is also a time of colour, and of death. At the end the music thus turns into a festive dance con grandezza. Maybe it bears the echo of a sarabande to the dying splendour of summer - or as T.S. Eliot put it: late roses filled with early snow. Autumn Gardens was commissioned by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and premiered at the London Proms in July 1999.

High Autumn is the second of four works commissioned by and dedicated to 78 adventure-seeking tubists representing 30 states and three countries, who fearlessly joined the 2001 Solstice/Equinox Commissioning Consortium to commission James Grant to write four new recital pieces. As each Solstice and Equinox approached during the year 2001, a new piece was sent out to the participants. All four pieces (Stuff, High Autumn, Just a Thought and Endorphins) now exist in multiple versions for orchestral and band instruments and are programmed frequently at conferences and on student and faculty recitals throughout the year. The music of High Autumn, hymn-like in nature, suggests (perhaps) a ritualistic procession - of academics, philosophers, pilgrims - and asks for contemplative interpretation on the part of both the tubist and pianist.

Steele's superb song-cycle Autumn Sequence was written for the pupils of Stockport Grammar School, and is scored for speaker, solo voices, chorus, flute or piccolo or recorder, tubular bells, handbells, organ pedal and piano, being the rather idiosyncratic resources then available at the school. It was first performed on October 3rd 1969 in the schools Hallam Hall, where the composer had been responsible for the specification of the recently installed organ. Douglas Steele himself played the piano part in his own inimitable style extending and improvising the cadenzas between the movements. A recording is available on Campion Cameo 2040/1 featuring Richard Baker narrating and choirs from Carlisle Cathedral, with John Turner on recorder.Autumn Sequence can be heard on the album Autumn Sequence: The Music of Douglas Steele and his circle.

Kai Nieminen's Time Around Autumn explores the mental images of the ensemble's 12 musicians, about the autumn, melancholy and freedom; as a counterpoint to the freedom an exact rhythmic pulse emerges finally lulling to sleep.
