Bach's cantata My God alone this heart possesses BWV 169 is from his third annual cantata cycle in Leipzig; it was first performed on 20 October 1726 for the 18th Sunday after Trinity. As recent research has shown, the text was written by the Leipzig student, Christoph Birkmann. With the exception of the final chorale, this is a cantata for solo alto with, of course, a rich orchestral scoring consisting of three oboes, obbligato organ and strings. The first purely instrumental movement can be traced back to an instrumental concerto, which has been lost, after Bach had also composed the Keyboard Concerto in E major BWV 1053. The lyrical-vocal highpoint of the cantata is the fifth movement, which is also based on the concerto and it shows off Bach's arranging artistry to the highest degree. Among the movements are an aria-like recitative vocal movement, as well as another aria with an almost virtuoso organ accompaniment. Score available separately - see item CA.3116900.

Bach created the cantata Erhohtes Fleisch und Blut by setting the sacred words to what had originally been the music of a secular cantata, presumably for the festival of Pentecost in 1727. Bach made few alterations to the musical structure, but he enlarged the original solo scoring for soprano and bass to a four-voice ensemble. Particularly notable among the solo movements is the extensive duet for soprano and bass in the form of a minuet, which in its musical language is certainly unique in Bach's cantatas. The dancelike final chorus brings the four voices together, and gives highly effective expression to the joy of Pentecost. Score available separately - see item CA.3117300.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Magnificat BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat, right at the beginning of Bach's period in Leipzig, for the Visitation of Mary on 2.7.1723; for a further performance on the 1st day of Christmas, Bach added four extra Christmas movements following a Leipzig tradition. Only in the 1730s did Bach arrange the Magnificat in the well-known version in D; the orchestration was slightly altered, particularly improving the considerable practical performance problems encountered in the E flat major version. Our critical new edition contains the version of the Magnificat in D, based on Bach's autograph score. For Christmas performances the extra movements are available separately, transposed for performance with the D major version of the Magnificat (Carus 31.243/50). With the unfinished revision (1739) as an appendix. The St. John Passion ranks among the great vocal works from Bach's Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he made numerous changes. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources. The wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version is made possible for the first time with the present edition in this fourth and final version which was performed under Bach's direction in 1749.
