The Bartók Performing Editions-Instruktive Ausgaben von Béla Bártok. Par BART...(+)
The Bartók Performing Editions-Instruktive Ausgaben von Béla Bártok. Par BARTOK BELA. Bartók probably first played pieces by Domenico Scarlatti in public in 1911. During the next two decades he featured them in his piano recitals more than 60 times. His dedication to Italian and French Baroque music is also illustrated by the fact that in 1920, he signed a contract with the Budapest publisher Rozsnyai to edit seven volumes of Baroque keyboard music. His plan was to select compositions by Couperin and Rameau in addition to pieces by Scarlatti, but during the 1920s it ended up being only two volumes of Couperin and another two comprising ten compositions by Scarlatti. In editing these masterpieces, Bartók's aim was primarily to counterbalance or even overshadow the works by the 'Mendelssohn-Schumann epigones' used in primary and secondary musical education. The present single-volume collection comprises Bartók's two Scarlatti volumes, complete with an editorial preface, his detailed performing instructions, and his commentary. The editor recommends these compositions for pianists with at least five years' experience, and give practical recommendations for the grouping of individual items to form charming 'sonatina-like' sets of pieces./ Répertoire / Piano

Adrien Barthe's Couvre Feu or 'Curfew' for Oboe and Piano. Couvre Feu is No.5 (and the best) of a set of six pieces for Oboe (or Violin) and Piano by French bandmaster AdrienBarthe and probably the only one of the six to be in print. It is dedicated to 'Monsieur Emile Devraine' and there was a Violin maker of that name working in Paris and broadly contemporary with Barthe. He was a goodfriend of the flautist Paul Taffanel and was involved with the Societe des Instruments de Vent that flourished in Paris at the end of the 19th century. Barthe gave up composing and turned to teaching after the failure of hisopera 'La Fiancee d'Abydos' in 1865 - a failure due more to the weakness of the libretto than the quality of his music.

Long before his famous Mikrokosmos Bart?k composed a comprehensive collection of little piano pieces entitled For Children. Written in 1908 1911 its two volumes are based on Hungarian and Slovakian folk tunes respectively. Bothare organised in ascending difficulty from simple two-part pieces to Impressionistic miniatures and they offer everything that children???s hands can manage. Bart?k revised this collection in the 1940s. He did not just makemusical improvements but also gave every movement a title. This revised version forms the main text of our Urtext edition while an appendix offers movements from the early version that diverge significantly from the revisedones. As always in Henle???s Bart?k editions there are indications regarding performance practice and insights into how the composer himself played these pieces.

The Children's and Female Choruses were composed in a single burst of creative activity at the zenith of Bartók's career, in the summer of 1935, between such masterpieces as the String Quartet #5 and the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. These short choral pieces are based on folk texts that Bartók further polished and stylized. The music, however, is wholly the composer's own, although it frequently includes motifs, rhythmic formulas and line structures reminiscent of Hungarian folk songs. Both editions contain nine of the two-part pieces of the set, transcribed idiomatically but faithfully for descant and treble recorders, respectively. / Flûte A Bec Soprano

The New Essential Companion. Henrik Wiese, the internationally renowned orchestr...(+)
The New Essential Companion. Henrik Wiese, the internationally renowned orchestral and solo flautist, has spent four years compiling what promises to be the definitive guide to audition repertoire for students preparing for a seat in a professional orchestra. He has worked with his own students in Salzburg as they engaged in auditions, as well as with other professional players and his teaching colleagues at the conservatorium. He sourced repertoire lists from job advertisements past and present and referred to other audition lists such as those of Baxtresser and Wye. Considerable research has gone into the differences between existing editions of the chosen pieces even, surprisingly, from twentieth century composers such as Prokofiev and Stravinsky. 'The Flute Audition” then looks at practical matters such as page turns and metronome markings. Wiese comments, for example, that Hindemith's own recording takes a passage from 'Symphonic Metamorphoses” markedly slower than in the score. The result of all this painstaking research is the most comprehensive collection of international audition pieces yet published in a single volume.
'This is an excellent collection of orchestral excerpts for the next generation of young musicians. You can use it to prepare for auditions anywhere in the world. Whether it's for an opera house, symphony or chamber orchestra, everything you need is here.'/ Recueil / Flûte Traversière

The 'Romanian Folk Dances' undoubtedly rank amongst Bartók's most popular compositions. The earliest version is scored for piano (1915) and was published by Universal Edition in 1918. ln the preparation of this revised edition the last previous printed edition was compared with the available manuscript sources which include editions marked by Béla Bartók with corrections. His corrected copies of the violin-piano transcription (prepared by Zoltán Székely) as well as the orchestra arrangement were also considered. The major correction concerns metronome numbers. At various times since the work's first publicationthe composer slightly revised some of these tempi. ln the composer's lifetime the last printed editions of both violin-piano and piano versions produced during World War II bear corrections in his file copies the two being in agreement with each other as well as with the marked duration of each dance. The tempi found in these printed editions believed to be the composer's last word on the subject appear in this revised edition.'

Bartók taught piano at the Music Academy in Budapest from 1907 to 1934. In his first years as a professor the Budapest music publishers Rozsnyai and Rózsavölgyi commissioned him to prepare so-called instructive editions (including suggestions, commentaries and fingerings for the performer) of several classics of the piano repertoire, altogether more than two thousand pages of music. Following Bach and Beethoven, Mozart was the third classical titan of whom Bartók ventured to undertake a performing edition necessary for music education and the sheet music trade in Hungary. Károly Rozsnyai entrusted the work to him. Bartók worked on revisions of the sonatas between 1910 and 1912, and in 1912 or 1913 the pieces were published in a single-volume version. The two-volume form was published later, perhaps during the years of inflation following the First World War, on poorer quality paper and with gray cover. Bartók's editing reflects contemporary ideas about performance, but is for the most part more detailed and elaborate than in other similar instructive editions at the turn of the century. For the present edition we have corrected known printing errors by retouching the score, and we have deleted abbreviation letters referring to analysis of the form of the sonatas, which Bartók agreed to only at the explicit request of the publisher. We have added an English translation to the footnotes in Hungarian and German. The reader's attention is drawn to significant problems of authenticity and text in new editorial footnotes. To the new edition we have added an afterword by László Somfai which details the circumstances of the first publication, Bartók's sources and his working methods. Bartók's Mozart concept is outlined in detail, and the author reveals the problems surrounding the composer's edition and the significant distortions in the musical text, and puts into a historical context the performance indications used by Bartók. / Partitions classique / Piano - instruments à clavier / Piano / EMB (Editio Musica Budapest)
