Par CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO MARIO.
Born into a family of bankers that had lived in Florence since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) studied under Pizzetti at the city'
s Conservatoire. He soon became one of the leading members of the young Italian school, which broke with the tyranny of bel canto to return to the instrumental tradition of the Italian masters from the Baroque era.
In 1928, Amédée-Landély Hettich, a vocal teacher in Paris, asked Castelnuovo-Tedesco to write a vocalise for the Répertoire moderne de Vocalises-E
tudes, the publication of which he was supervising at Leduc. Castelnuovo-Tedesco'
s contribution, entitled Vocalise-E
tude for Medium Voice, became so popular that it was immediately transcribed several times over.
The present adaptation for cello and piano, was created, with prior consent from the composer, by the famous Catalan cellist Gaspar Cassadó in 1930. The works opens with a poignant lamento that grieves the tragic fate of the Jewish people- it is followed by a folk dance whose '
brisk and stubborn” movement marks, with panache, an imperious refusal to yield to resignation. The composer adopted the same proactive stance himself when in 1939, fleeing Mussolini'
s antisemitic laws, he decided to emigrate to the United States, a land of refuge to which he would remain faithful until his death some thirty years later./ Répertoire / Violoncelle et Piano

Par CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO MARIO.
Born into a family that had lived in Florence since the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) entertained only a distant relationship with the music he heard at synagogue. It was only when he discovered Schelemo, a rhapsody for cello and orchestra written in 1916 by Ernest Bloch, that he began to understand what '
Jewish music” could be.
In the mid-1920s, the young composer found a collection of prayers set to music among his maternal grandfather'
s papers. Something clicked, and from then on, Jewish tradition would become a source of inspiration for Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In 1928, two years after publishing the Dances of King David, he wrote this Vocalise-E
tude for medium voice and piano at the request of vocal teacher Amédée-Landély Hettich, who wanted to include it in the Répertoire moderne de Vocalises-E
tudes published by Leduc. The piece became so popular that several instrumental adaptations were soon created, published under the title Chant hébraïque (for violin and piano: AL17 713- for cello and piano: AL 17196).
Divided into three sections, this wordless melody opens with a '
sad and impassioned” chant that appears to grieve the tragic fate of the Jewish people. A folk dance follows, in which a '
lively and stubborn” movement has great panache. The third section returns to the initial poignant theme before briefly reiterating the dance motif, allowing the piece to conclude on a hopeful note. The composer himself would adopt this proactive stance, refusing to yield to resignation when, fleeing Mussolini'
s anti-Semitic laws, he decided to emigrate in 1939 to the United States, a land of refuge to which he would remain faithful until his death some thirty years later./ Etude / Voix Moyenne et Piano

For Flexible Ensemble. World Music Ireland for ensemble gives young musicians the opportunity to familiarize themselves with music culture from Ireland.
Hardly can a country Iook back on such a rich and continuous music tradition as Eire (as Ireland is called in Gaelic, which, aside from English, is still spoken by a large part of the population). Even though a large part of the music, as we know today, dates back to the 17th and 18th century, many melodies can be traced back to a far older origin. At the same time, there are common roots with Scotland, England and Wales which, today, are often grouped into the general category of Celtic and Gaelic music.
A selection of pieces of fascinating and, at the same time, important styles of music from Ireland should further intensify the already present interest. Rhythms, styles, and instruments typical of a certain country are explained in short texts in English, French and German. The pieces are intended for modern ensemble instruction, in flexible instrumentation, and, thus, can be employed in a variety of ways. Aside from a play-along version, the CD also contains an ensemble version with instruments typical of the respective style of music.
The parts are included on the CD as digital files to enable an easier and more flexible usage. Edizione critica a cura di Gabriele Dotto e Roger Parker (Vol. 1: XLIV, Vol. 2: ...(+)
Edizione critica a cura di Gabriele Dotto e Roger Parker (Vol. 1: XLIV, Vol. 2: VIII). Par DONIZETTI GAETANO. Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, written to a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, was first performed at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples on 26 September 1835. It has remained in the repertory without interruption as one of Donizetti’s most popular operas throughout its nearly 200-year history. The edition proposes as the principal text a version of the opera that, for the most part, is as near as possible to that given at the premiere in Naples. However, one of the important new features of the edition is that it includes several fully orchestrated passages that, for unknown reasons, were cancelled very close to the time of the first performance. It also features in the third-act mad scene an obbligato part for the glass harmonica, an instrument that Donizetti had chosen for this extraordinary scene, and drafted in his autograph score, but was then constrained to substitute with a solo flute when the glass harmonica player got into contractual difficulties with the theatre. While the glass harmonica part was considered a mere “musicological curiosity” some decades ago, the critical edition now convincingly argues for its legitimate restoration as part of the composer’s preferred concept. The Sources section of the edition includes a detailed examination of all contemporary sources for the opera. The composer’s autograph score is of course the most important of these, but also of great value is the first printed vocal score of the opera, which in some numbers has a piano reduction prepared by the composer and contains many vocal variants (all reported in the score) that will be a great value to performers. There are also a number of early manuscript copies of the full score, several of which are valuable in outlining the first interpretations of Donizetti’s music. The critical edition restores the original keys, thus maintaining Donizetti’s overall harmonic design, but discusses transpositions that later entered the performing and editorial tradition of the opera. Three transposed pieces – which may have had Donizetti’s approval – will be made available available in the material for hire to theatres. / Date parution : 2022-03-05/ Répertoire / Orchestre
