2 Duets. Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) only began to devote himself intensively to the project of an original opera in Czech at the age of 38. The libretto of 'The Bartered Bride”, the second of Smetana's nine operas, was written for Smetana by the poet and journalist Karel Sabina. The subject chosen for the comic opera was the story of a pair of lovers in the countryside whose relationship is disapproved of by their parents. It is set during the festival at a village church anniversary.
The final form of the work, which soon came to be regarded as a national opera, was preceded by a relatively difficult genesis.
The opera was written between 1863 and 1865 and was premiered on 30 May 1866 at the Provisional Theatre in Prague, where the composer's last version of the work was also performed in 1870.
This vocal score contains the musical text of the critical edition of Smetana's own vocal score.
The newly-set edition contains both Czech and German vocal texts - the German singing translation is by Kurt Honolka.
The newly-set and revised performance material for the entire opera, based on the critical edition by Frantisek Bartos, is available on hire.
The vocal score replaces the old edition AE 112.

For his six characteristic pieces ?Rêves? (Dreams) composed in 1875 Smetana returned to his favourite instrument the piano. It was the first time he had written for the instrument in almost ten years. His compositions reflect two forms: the character piece and the virtuoso piece the latter being a form that occupied Smetana particularly during his time in Sweden. Importantly Smetana was also working on the first tone poem of ?Má vlast? while composing these six pieces. The six pieces of ?Rêves? were written for and dedicated to Smetana?s former pupils. The dedication was a means of thanking them for the benefit concert they had organised in the spring of 1875for their teacher who had recently lost his hearing. This significant work by Bedrich Smetana who was the founder of Czech Nationalism in music has not been included in the Complete Edition of Works for Piano. This new edition by Jarmila Gabrielová is based on the first printed edition of 1879 by Emilián Starýs. It is the first critical edition ever produced of this masterpiece.First critical editionIncludes foreword and critical commentary (Czech/Eng/Ger)With the historical fingering by Smetana?s contemporary Jindrich K an z Albestu

Bedrich Smetana's The Bartered Bride dates from the happiest most musically fulfilling period in the composer's life and draws inspiration from Czech folk music. The action takes place to the backdrop of a visiting circus. Marenka and Jenik’s love for each other seems doomed as Marenka's father has brokered her in marriage to Vasek. Marenka meets Vasek who doesn't realize who she is and dissuades him from the marriage; meanwhile the marriage broker Kecal persuades Jenik to accept marriage to a wealthy girl; he agrees on condition that Marenka marry the son of Tobias Micha. Vasek forsakes the arranged marriage in pursuit of a circus dancer; Marenka remains scornful ofJenik's seeming betrayal. Jenik's plan becomes clear in the final scene when he is revealed to be Micha's long-lost elder son. All of the mismatched couples are sorted out and a family restored in a joyous finale. This is the Schirmer Edition of the Vocal Score with English text by Marian Farquhar.

When Smetana composed his Piano trio in the autumn of 1855 it was an act of catharsis to recover from the death of his four-year-old daughter Friederike. This highly emotional work was also his first large-scale piece of chambermusic. Its first public performance in December 1855 was regrettably not a great success and so Smetana embarked on a protracted process of reworking it. By the late 1850s it had reached its current form. Smetana always liked toperform it but only found a publisher for it in 1880 when one of his pupils invited the Hamburg publisher Hugo Pohle to a performance at short notice. Smetana specialist Milan Posp Å¡il has based this Henle Urtext edition on thefirst edition by Pohle but has also drawn upon the earlier sources. This has enabled him to iron out numerous inconsistencies found in the first edition.

Für Klavier-Smetana?s piano sketch Macbeth also known as Macbeth and the Witches after William Shakespeare?s tragedy originated in 1859 while the composer was living in Sweden. Some scholars believe that it was meant to be scored for full orchestra. The work?s dark and gloomy mood is connected with the death of Smetana?s wife Katharina on 19 April 1859.Macbeth only appeared in print posthumously in 1912. It soon entered the piano repertoire and in the course of the 20th century it was scored for orchestra by Otakar Jeremiá? and for piano and orchestra by Jarmil Burghauser. Our Urtext edition proceeds from the only surviving source Smetana?s pencil sketch. The editor has addedas little as possible to the musical text in order to faithfully recreate the challenge of performing a sketch.

Smetana's 'Vlatava' can be regarded as a prime example of programme music. The composition is a hymn to Smetana's home country of Bohemia describing the course of the river Vltava from the source to its junction with the river Elbe. The work describes the course of the river Vltava starting from the two small sources of the warm Vltava and the cold Vltava until the two streams merge. The course of the Vltava is through forests and meadows and further through the landscape where many merry celebrations are being held; a dance of the water nymphs in the moonlight castles magnificent houses and ruins proudly appearing on nearby rocks; the Vltava forming eddies in the rapids ofSt. Johann flowing as a large river toward Prague until the fortress of Vysehrad appear and eventually disappearing in the distance to flow majestically into the river Elbe. Zwei Duette für Violine und Klavier - Two Duets for Violin and Piano-?They are in a light style intended more for use in the home than for concert performance?. Thus Smetana described these two duets in which he memorialised his Bohemian homeland. It is a fact though scarcelybelievable that Smetana had by this time already been deaf for two years. The pieces were popular from the outset: Smetana was able to demand a high price for them and even to play off several aspiringpublishers against each other. The duets are not technically over-demanding and attract by means of their joyful character and powerful melodies.
