With inspiration taken from composers Maurice Ravel, Arthur Benjamin and Charles Ives, Bourgeois take s a tongue-in-cheek approach to this challenging 3-movement work. While the work is infused with humor throughout, it still showcases his mastery of the wind band idiom.

In 1972, I wrote a Sonata for Two Pianos for two friends who were piano teachers at Wellington College. When in 1995 I was asked to write a work for wind band, I returned to this Sonata and have re-arranged and in the new version renamed it Fantasy Triptych. There are three movements: 1. Le Tombeau d'Arthur Benjamin Ravel wrote 'Le Tombeau de Couperin,' Arthur Benjamin wrote 'Le Tombeau de Ravel' and so the temptation to write 'Le Tombeau d'Arthur Benjamin' was overwhelming. At the end of the movement there is an oblique reference to Benjamin's own 'Jamaican Rumba' which accompanies a quote from an old Spanish folk song 'Loro, enciende el hervidor de agua.' 2. Mr. Bolt goes for a ride in his motor car, and Monsieur Ravel turns in his grave. The movement is dedicated to an old friend, Geoffrey Bolt, who adores the music of Ravel. but at the time of writing was learning to drive. He always described his vehicle as a motor car. To describe him as an impatient motorist would be a gross understatement. The refined suavity of Ravel's music was in complete contrast to these early manifestations of road rage, hence the central angry outburst. 3. The War March of the Ostriches The music of Charles Ives was fascinating me at the time of writing this movement and some of the influence has rubbed off in this rondo-like march. At the end there is a quote from the very beginning of the first movement. The title was inspired by the amusing antics of a group of ostriches during a visit to Bristol Zoo.

The birth of Philip Sparke’s second son, Benjamin, was the inspiration for composing Ballad for Benny. A short calm introduction leads to the main ballad theme, a gentle waltz melody. Following the work’s climax in which the complete band plays the main theme the sound fades and the piece ends in calm and serenity.

Die Geburt seines zweiten Sohnes, Benjamin, inspirierte Sparke zu der Komposition Ballad for Benny. Eine kurze, ruhige Einleitung führt uns zum balladenartigen Hauptthema, einem lieblichen Walzer, gespielt von Klarinette und Saxophon. Der Walzer erreicht einen Höhepunkt und führt zu einem Zwischenteil mit Passagen in Terzen für Flöte, Klarinette und Altsaxophon. Dieser steigert sich wieder zu einem Höhepunkt, welcher das Hauptthema mit den Blechbläsern aufs Neue vorstellt, nun gespielt von den Blechblasinstrumenten. Diese Wiedergabe des Themas durch das gesamte Blasorchester geht über in eine auf dem Zwischenteil basierende kurze Koda, mit welcher das Stück ruhigendet. Aufregend und gefühlvoll zugleich, wie der Anlass der Komposition.

Dit rondo (rondeau) is oorspronkelijk een instrumentale dans voor strijkers bij het toneelstuk Abdelazer, or The Moor’s Revenge, het werd door Purcell gecomponeerd in zijn sterfjaar, 1695. Het hele werk zou slechts één lieden verder instrumentale muziek bevatten, waaronder dit Rondeau. De vorm is A B A C A - dit is het kleinste rondo dat in de vormleer mogelijk is. Het wordt ook wel een Frans barokrondo genoemd. Myriam Mees schreef een zeer geslaagdarrangement voor accordeonorkest.

Dieses Rondeau war ursprünglich ein instrumentaler Tanz für Streicher aus der Bühnenmusik zu Aphra Behns Stück Abdelazer oder Die Rache des Mohren. Das vollständige Werk, das Purcell 1695, seinem letzten Lebensjahr, vollendete, enthält nur ein Lied, der Rest ist Instrumentalmusik, wozu auch das bekannte Rondeau zählt. Myriam Mees sorgte für diese gelungene Bearbeitung für Akkordeonorchester.

Purcell a composé ce thème brillant pour la musique de scène de la pièce Abdelazer ou la revanche du Maure (1693) d’Aphra Behn. Presque trois siècles plus tard, Benjamin Britten l’introduisit dans son œuvre symphonique The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (désignée souvent par son sous-titre Variation & Fugue sur un Thème de Purcell) une partition pour un film documentaire, sorte de visite guidée des instruments de l’orchestre. L’arrangement de Myriam Mees reste fidèle l’œuvre originale de Purcell.

'LISTENING EARTH' is a symphonic drama, a one- movement composition in four parts based on the work by two writers, Joseph Addison (1672-1719) and W.H.Auden (1907-1973). Joseph Addison is not particularly well known; he was English, a classical scholar, essayist, poet and politician, but one of his hymns was used by Benjamin Britten. in his setting of a Thomas Tallis canon.
The hymn is singularly beautiful and being a composer always inspired by extramusical stimuli such as poems, nature, paintings, I was immediately convinced when I carne across the Addison hymn, that here was exactly what I wanted to use as my major source of inspiration for this piece, commissioned by and written for The Berlin Philharmonic.
I don't refer to the hymn in its entirety, but have chosen the following 3 excerpts, all acting as mottos for the first three sections of the piece, thus turning the piece into a straightforward tonepoem in the classical.
