Par CHOPIN FREDERIC. Chopin Berceuse for Piano Op.57 Chopin's ?Berceuse? is one of his most frequently performed works and was regarded by subsequent composers as the prototype of the instrumental lullaby. This piece that Chopin initially named ?Variantes? was composed around the time of his great Sonata in B minor Op.58 and was renamed ?Berceuse? only when it went to print. In it, the composer systematically subjects a four-measure motif to a series of variants which are linked in a continuous flow over an ostinato figure. This Urtext edition reflects the latest state of Chopin research, offering a definitive musical text based on a careful evaluation of the sources. Readings and editorial decisions are documented in the Critical Commentary (Eng) and a detailed Foreword (Ger/Eng) provides information on the work. Hardy Rittner, a Chopin specialist as well as Professor of Piano at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, has supplemented the composer's fingering from a historically informed perspective. Barbara Bell's La Berceuse (French Lullaby) arranged by John Rutter for SATB choir with Piano accompaniment. This charming carol composed in 1975 by Barbara Bell was discovered by John Rutter who enlisted the help of John Suchet and Classic FM to track down the composer. Haunting in character but with a delightful French waltz feel and a sweeping Piano part La Berceuse has been recorded by Voces8 on the Decca label.

'Berceuse was commissioned by the Birmingham Chamber Music Society for their Diamond Jubilee Season 2011/12 the first performance was given by John McCabe on 18th February 2012 at the Adrian Boult Hall Birmingham Conservatoire. It is dedicated to John and Mary Joubert. The piece derives from three sources: the idea of the classical/romantic Berceuse (though in this case not so much a lullaby for children as is sometimes the case) the notion of two alternating themes of equal importance and the style of piano writing in which the main part of the melody is heard in the left hand rather than being right-hand tune plus left-hand accompaniment. The two mainthemes are closely related in style and content and towards the end they are heard together simultaneously in simplified form quietly revealing the dual texture for which the piece has been striving.'        John McCabe (2011)
