The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

At a 1923 concert dedicated to the music of J.S. Bach put on by the great violinist Joseph Szigeti, fellow violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe (1858-1931) was deeply moved and inspired, leading to a sketch produced in twenty-four hours for a cycle of six sonatas for unaccompanied violin, each modeled after the style of a different virtuoso, capturing something of each performer's style in the piece for whom it was written. The final result was Ysaÿe's Op. 27, Six Sonatas for Solo Violin. The work has remained immensely popular since it was composed, having been interpreted and recorded many times by the very best violinists of the past 100 years. Sonatas and dedicatees: 1. Childrenâ??s Oak was commissioned by the wind band from Beauquesne, France. This solemn work pays homage to a city particularly affected by the two World Wars and is inspired by the knowledge that the city of Beauquesne needed to recover from these terrible episodes in its history. The title has its origin in the roots of the word â??Beauquesneâ?, the beautiful oak tree. It is a beautiful slow piece for your concert, or as a resource to work on phrasing and intonation, or alternatively as a warm up piece.

Childrenâ??s Oak is geschreven in opdracht van het blaasorkest van het Franse Beauquesne. Dit plechtige werk is een eerbetoon aan een plaats die in de beide wereldoorlogen zwaar is getroffen. Het is ge nspireerd op de gedachte dat de gemeente Beauquesne zich moest herstellen na deze verschrikkelijke periodes uit haar geschiedenis. De titel is gebaseerd op het woord â??beauquesneâ??: de mooie eikenboom. Het is een fraai langzaam stuk voor uw volgende concert dat tevens geschikt is om te werken aan frasering en intonatie. Ook is het prima muziek voor een warming-up.

Das Stück Childrenâ??s Oak wurde vom Blasorchester in Beauquesne (Frankreich) in Auftrag gegeben. Dieses feierliche Werk würdigt eine Stadt, die in den beiden Weltkriegen stark in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurde. Geprägt von der Hoffnung, die die Stadt Beauquesne brauchte, um sich von den schrecklichen Ereignissen seiner Geschichte zu erholen handelt es sich um ein wunderschönes langsames Stück, das nicht nur für Konzerte geeignet ist, sondern auch um Intonation und Phrasierungen zu üben oder aber auch als Aufwärmstück.

Iiro Rantala's Veneziana for chamber ensemble and piano (2021-2022) is a 50 minute long program about all things Venice; how famous composers were affected by the city, how they affected the city and became part of the Venetian Story – told with an Iiro twist. The meeting of Prokofiev and Diaghilev turns into a real nutcracker ballet Romeo and Steve, whilst Mozart loses his mojo when visiting Venice. Monteverdi starts and Verdi completes the waltz boom - and Sibelius finds his national romantic melancholy again.

Veneziana is scored for wind and string quintets and a pianist. This product is a study score (A4 sized, spiral bounding). The performance material is available for hire from the publisher.

Iiro Rantala (b. 1970) is a pianist, a composer, and most likely Finland's best known jazz musician internationally. Rantala is also known for his compositions for musicals and the tv-shows he has hosted. In addition Rantala has composed music for films, television and more recently, for the stage. Rantala’s second opera, Die Zaubermelodika was a commission by the Komische Oper Berlin. His double concerto Joy of Life has been programmed by numerous orchestras. The fast-and-furious Seven o’clock Overture has been dubbed as Finnish Candide Overture.
