The title of this piece is taken from the late astronomer and educator Carl Sagan's book Cosmos (1980). Sagan was a great voice in the pursuit of knowledge and reason, an invaluable force in the struggle against ignorance and superstition. His vast historical knowledge and sensitive ear for the poetic also allowed him to adorn his various texts with short quotations from original folklore through history, quotations which I have used as mental and spiritual appetizers, heading some of the movements in this piece. Serenade also reaches out to other inspirational sources, such as William Shakespeare, Joseph Conrad and British science-writer John Gribbin, another great educator and popularizer. The Darwin quotation heading the second movement was also found in Sagan's book Cosmos (it is originally from Charles Darwin: On The Origin Of Species) and so was the quotation about The Backbone of the Night. The Ku-Fu-quotation can be found in Sagan's last great work THE DEMON-HAUNTED WORLD (1995).

Amistad (the Spanish word for friendship) is a brief set of three pieces for two Flutes composed by Simon Holt in May 2013. It takes its form from the three syllables of the word a-mi-stad. The first piece begins on the note A and the second piece on E (-mi-) and the final movement has four sections of equal length which take the individual letters as their respective starting points; S (Eb/D#), T (B), the return of A and then D. Simon Holt has won numerous awards throughout his career for his compositions, such as the Ivor Novello Classical Award, and the British Composer Award. Having collaborated with the London Sinfonietta and the Nash Ensemble, Amistad is one in a long line of expertly composed and musically brilliant works. The piece as a whole is about 6 minutes long.

Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann was originally recorded by the German female singer Nena in the eighties as a single in Germany. It was featured on her third studio album Feuer und Flamme. In 2002, Nena celebrated twenty years as a recording artist with an album full of new versions of her hit songs. Together with the British female pop singer Kim Wilde - another pop icon of the eighties - she recorded the English version of Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann, entitled Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime. The song was released as a single in 2003 and became a top ten hit in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Belgium.Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann werd in de jaren tachtig opgenomen door de Duitse popzangeres Nena als single voor de Duitse markt. It is a song by the British singer-songwriter Harry Styles, who felt inspired by the title of the American novel In Watermelon Sugar (1968) by Richard Brautigan.The melody of the chorus had already taken form during ‘Live on Tour’, the debut tour that Styles embarked on in September 2017, finishing in July the following year. String Quartet No.2 was written in 1951, and dedicated to Percy and Ella Grainger. It is recognised as one of his least extravagant creations, but is nevertheless a solid work which is continually underappreciated.
Cyril Scott (1879-1970) was a British composer, pianist and poet. His most popular works, which he is largely remembered by today, were written in the years preceding the Second World War, however he continued to compose prolifically, in the face of indifference from the outside world, right up until his death at the age of 91. His music is predominantly in the Romantic style, and serves as a tasteful reminder of a bygoneage.

Alasdroim (Pronounced Ah-lass-DRIMM) is a composition that draws upon two ancient Irish Gaelic folk songs. The songs are titled: Gol Na mBan San Ar (The crying of the women at the slaughter) and Mairseail Alasdroim (MacAllistrum's march). In 1647 at Knockinoss in the county of Cork, 4,000 Irishmen under the leadership of Alasdor MacDonnell went into battle with the forces of the British Lord Inchiquin. All of the Irish forces perished. The first of these two Gaelic folk songs is about the battle at Knockinoss. The second song was written for the funeral procession of Alasdor MacDonnell. The title, Alasdroim, is the Gaelic word for MacAllistrum. Alasdroim was composed for the 1996 Music Educators National Conference.
