Carl Orff's Carmina Burana is amongst the most important compositions of the 20th century. Orff was fascinated by the original power and pictorial imagination of this medieval song collection, compiled in the 13th century in the German monastery of Benediktbeuern. ' The “Carmina Burana†are our Middle Ages', Orff said in 1970 in an interview. 'With “Carmina Burana†being played all over the world, it is not my music that's important but to comprehend the occidental power of this body of poetry and to let it work on our imagination.' According to the medieavalist Wolfgang Maaz it is Orff who, besides Umberto Eco, had the most signifant influence on the perception of the Middle Ages in the 20th century.. The autograph score is a fair copy written in blue ink throughout. Additional entries in pencil and coloured pencil turn this into a source of extraordinary significance for musicologists and amateurs alike.

Useful for a sacred concert or the music appreciation services churches sometimes hold, this anthem is based on a Charles Wesley text. The composer's knack for an exuberant organ part is on display, and handbells are optional. (Requires three octaves and has few optional notes in the fourth.) Your choir will enjoy singing all of it, but the part in canon (with the basses and handbells in augmentation) is quite a bit of fun.

This piece is another attempt of mine to bridge the significant gap between dance music and concert music. There are large 12-tone sections, representative of concert music, juxtaposed over a dance club aesthetic. This is to pay tribute to the clubbing and partying atmosphere that is prevalent at Penn State, where Drew Welkie was attending school. The title is inspired by a comment that my sister and I overheard at a restaurant. A young lady, obviously incredibly angry and perturbed, said to a friend I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE WEAR SKIRTS AND FLATS..

This eclectic piano solo was written for the Vision Into Arts International Pianofest and was premiered in December of 2002 in New York City. The composer, son of noted jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, pays tribute to his father’s jazz legacy and mentor Darius Milhaud through this wild romp featuring a variety of styles including boogie-woogie, jazz, and improvisation. A short piece (only three minutes), this dramatic work is perfect for an unusual encore, showpiece in a piano recital or when a little dramatic contrast is in order for any program.

This major work from Alexander Goehr reflects upon the diametrically opposing roles towers can have. The composer writes 'Towers embody the idea of climbing upwards, in the spiritual as much as in the physical sense. Their destruction can be regarded as a punishment (or as a rescue from) man's overwhelming arrogance.'Using texts by Franz Kafka, 17th century mystic Jacob Boehme and Swiss writer Friedrich Durrenmatt, Goehr explores man's desire to build towers to draw closer to God whilst the works feel nothing but despair at the fruitfulness of such a task.

“Maurice Hauchard (1870-1957) was a French violinist and composer. As a minor composer, often in the shadow of his contemporary, Maurice Ravel, much of Hauchard's music is not widely known. However, his Positions Studies have enhanced the technical progression of many violinists and Alain Mames' transcription of the studies for Viola have also been well-received. As an excellent, versatile musician, Hauchard loved his art and remains one of the greatest contributors to music education. Positions Studies (3rd Position) addresses the third hand position in the context of musical techniques, such as intervals, scales, chromaticism and is studies of varying styles. Mames' adaption for the Viola of Hauchard's Positions Studies is an imperative aid to technical progression.&rdquo.

Organist of Gloucester Cathedral from 1896 till his death in 1928, as well as composer, choir-trainer, adjudicator and teacher, Sir Herbert Brewer was involved for over three decades with the Three Choirs Festival, and his Memories of Choirs and Cloisters offers a vivid account of the planning and execution of the festivals in that time, those at Gloucester in particular. Though his professional life was spent exclusively in the provinces, his championing of contemporary music brought him into wide contact with composers and other artistic figures both from Britain and the continent, including Robert Bridges, Elgar, Glazunov, Rider Haggard, Parry, Quiller-Couch, Ravel, Saint-Saens and Sibelius (whose Luonnotar he premiered). John Morehen's fine new edition places Brewer's lively and insightful recollections of these and other encounters and connections in context for the modern reader, making the book an important addition to our fuller understanding of a remarkable period in British music. Neither a conventional autobiography nor a diary, but a collection of reminiscences compiled towards the end of his life, Brewer's Memories reveals a scrupulous and astute musician of great integrity, warm-hearted with a devotion to social justice and civic duty, and with a mischievous sense of humour.

Jesus shall reign where'er the sun does its successive journeys run. This first line of the hymn tune DUKE STREET conveys triumph and victory, and so does this arrangement and adaptation for two octaves of handbells. The music begins simply, but soon builds. A second section features the melody in the bass with a gliding, eighth-note accompaniment overhead in the treble. A Broader final section offers strong chords to emphasize the triumph with a couple of martellatos at the end to add proof to the puddin'!.

English. Text Source: Alas! and Did My Savior Bleed?, Isaac Watts, 1674-1748, alt., At the Cross, Ralph E. Hudson, 1843-1901, alt. Text by Isaac Watts.
“At the Cross†contains the very rich texts of Isaac Watts and Ralph Hudson. My desire is to treat each verse with utmost respect by highlighting—through music—the suffering, shame, hope, beauty, and glory of the cross. The cross embodies all of these attributes. You will notice there is a somberness that begins at m. 84, mirroring the darkness that ensued while Christ hung on the cross (Mark 15:33). A “darker†sound from the altos is encouraged. This is the turning point in the song, preparing the singers for the response to such a sacrifice. Although the text speaks of grief and debt (starting at m. 93), one can see the hope that builds, with the realization that complete surrender is the only response to such a sacrifice. Much thought and energy (under control) should be expended to aid this verse in building to the climactic point of the song, when hope is found in the cross and the burden has been lifted.

“Outburst” is a spectacular opening for any concert. The entire orchestra can showcase its impressive skills for over three minutes. The initial fanfare is abruptly interrupted by a pulsating, faster tempo, driven by powerful drum beats and orchestral rhythms. Following this, the first four notes of the fanfare resound in various variations. Each instrument section has its glorious moment and contributes collectively to the impressive finale.

This work is dedicated to the Blechreiz brass quintet on their 10th anniversary. Each musician is pushed to the limits in this very challenging composition. Rhythmically exposed passages that mesh together in a continuous sisteenth-note grooce, alternate with solo passages and a catchy chorus. In the middle of the composition a waltz suddenly sounds--but the ensemble is brought to its senses by the tube player's evident disapproval and the music soon returns to the original style. Demanding, tongue-in-cheek and witty passages with a funky groove are the ingredients of this new work by Otto M. Schwarz for brass quintet.
