In 1725, J.S. Bach gave his second wife, Anna Magdalena, a Notenbüchlein - a collection of solo keyboard pieces and arias. Most of the keyboard pieces were composed by friends, colleagues, and his son, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. The easier keyboard works were probably used to instruct their children, while the arias would have been performed by Anna Magdalena, who was a singer. For this edition, Edwin McLean has chosen and expertly edited the most popular and easier keyboard pieces. Originally, the pieces contained no dynamics and virtually no phrasing, which is typical of baroque harpsichord music and even early 18th-century fortepiano music. Sectional dynamics have been added editorially and may be changed at the discretion of the performer. A minimal amount of phrasing and articulation has also been added for clarity. This edition preserves the original notation for appoggiaturas, where small eighth or quarter notes resolve to the principal note. Ossias have been included to show how to play them; ossias also appear when needed for ornaments such as trills and mordents.

C. P. E. Bach's nine-movement Magnificat (1749), the first great vocal work from his Berlin years, is among the most magnificent sounding, in which the solo vocal parts are also among the most ambitious settings of the Hymn to the Virgin Mary (Luke 1). The work fulfills all the criteria required for a larger sacred composition: grandeur, dignity, polyphonic and concertante choral movements, sensitive (empfindsam) and expressive arias, a long concluding double fugue. This richly scored Magnificat (with 3 trumpets and timp. ad. lib.), which is almost one hour in duration, would be well suited, for example, as the central work on every Christmas or pre-Christmas concert programme. Also available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.3321500.

Of the three oratorios which Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed when he was music director in Hamburg, Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu is particularly intended to create splendor and effect with its use of magnificent-sounding trumpets and timpani. Bach liked this work very much and had it published in 1787, the year before his death. The following year the oratorio was performed by Mozart in Vienna. The text of the oratorio by Carl Wilhelm Ramler (1725–1798; better known as the poet of the frequently-set “Der Tod Jesu”) covers the Easter story of the disciples at Emmaus and the doubting Thomas, up to the image of Jesus ascending to heaven. The score is published as Vol. IV,2 of the C.P.E. Bach Complete Edition, edited by the Packard Humanities Institute. Carus publishes the vocal score and choral score for this work. The full score and parts can also be obtained from Carus.
