The “endgame” is the final stage of a game such as chess, bridge, or backgammon, when few pieces or cards remain. This is a piece full of spirit and zeal that describes the intensity of the last moments of an epic match or intense game. The piece opens with a mysterious-sounding chord that works to build suspense before the main melody appears. Dynamics should be exaggerated greatly, especially when the main theme is introduced. This motif should be played with a bold and confident sound from all sections, but especially from the cello and bass players. A slower, calmer section is introduced before the main theme and energy returns. This slower section should continue with the same overall feel of the piece while also following all dynamic markings and the sudden tempo change. This piece was written for and dedicated to my sixth-grade orchestra teacher. We both happen to really love chess.

Stimulated by my love of automata, this work for solo oboe takes its name from the invention of Wolfgang von Kempelen, who in the late eighteenth century constructed an extraordinary mechanical man powered by clockwork, dressed in a stylish Turkish costume and capable of playing chess. The chess player turned out to be a fraud but sparked many other thinkers and inventors to pondering what the possibilities of automation might be. In Hesketh's highly virtuosic work, the through-composed melody is subjected to a series of distortions by pulleys, cams, gears and cranks. There are also the onomatopoeic effects of winding up and whirring noises that add to the air of the mechanical.

Co-commissioned by 21 university wind symphonies, CONCERTO LOGIC is a 25-minute piano concerto inspired by games of chance, logic, and strategy, both ancient and contemporary. Pann himself has performed as the concerto’s soloist on many occasions. I. Dogs and Jackals (C-minor Fantasy) is an ancient Egyptian game; II. Ernö Rubik’s Magic Cube is a musical depiction of working on Rubik’s Cube until finally, after several days, the last few turns are found and the puzzle is solved; III. Rondo Capriccio: “Rage over a Lost Pawn” (piano solo) is an extended piano cadenza referring to the title of Beethoven’s famous “Rage over a Lost Penny” as well as a game of chess; and IV. Dancing with Caissa honors the patron goddess of chess players.
