“Missa brevis in F in score. This was the first Mass which Mr. Haydn composed whilst still a student” says an entry in the catalogue of Haydn’s musical estate. Circa 1798/99 Haydn entered the work without an incipit in his working catalogue as “Missa brevis in F. / a due Soprani”. Around 1805/06 he added in shaky decrepit handwriting to the title “Missa.” on the front page of the organ part of one of the set of parts prepared by his copyist Johann Elßler: “Brevis / di me Giuseppe Haydn mpria / 1749”. This date the earliest yet found on a work by Haydn corresponds to the title of the Haydn catalogue whichindicates the eighteenth year of Haydn’s life i. e. 1749/50 as the starting point of his work: “Catalogue of all those compositions which I happen to remember writing from my 18th to my 73rd year of life.” In 1805 Haydn set about adding further instruments to the original scoring for two violins and figured organ bass and by 15th February 1806 the larger instrumentation was ready as is evidenced by a letter written on this very day by the Haydn biographer Georg August Griesinger. It is however by no means certain whether the seventy-three-year-old undertook this adaptation himself. - Urtext from Joseph Haydn Werke - Full score parts (BA4644) and vocal score (BA4644-90) available for sale - Early string version and later version with wind instruments and timpani

Missa solemnis-Mozart composed the Mass in C K.337 about one year after the Coronation Mass K. 317; 'nel Marzo 1780 in Salisburgo' he wrote on the first page of his original score. And just as was the case with K.317 this work together with a new church sonata (K. 336/336) will have been intended for the Easter High Mass in Salzburg Cathedral. The formal instrumentation of the score with oboes solo bassoon trumpets and timpani (but without horns) only serves to strengthen such a supposition. What is striking about the work is the rigorously contrapuntal Benedictus which forms a stark contrast to the similarly unusual Agnus Dei in which a solo organ alternating with theconcertante wind instruments (oboe and bassoon) provides a framework for the coloratura-rich part of the solo soprano.Urtext of the ?New Mozart Edition?Ideal for church services and concert performancesFull score & performance material (BA4881) and vocal score (BA4881-90) for sale

The Duke Of Edinburgh for St.George's Chapel Windsor. The Jubilate Deo itself was composed as a companion piece to the Te Deum in C major dating from 1934 which had been written for Maurice Vinden and the Choir of St. Mark's NorthAudley Street London. In the Venite the tempo indication at the start is editorial as are a few cautionary accidentals.

Composer and Organist John Merbecke lived in interesting times. He was born soon after the beginning of the 16th century and spent his whole life in service of music at St Georgeâs Chapel at Windsor Castle. In 1543 he was arrested for heresy and sentenced to death but received a royal pardon unlike the three others with whom he was arrested. He returned to his position at Windsor and began work on a concordance of the English Bible to replace the one that had been destroyed when he was arrested. The Book of Common Praier Noted was published in 1550 at a time when the continued use of plainchant was controversial. Here Merbecke sets the chants but in English ratherthan Latin. As a piece of history for students of monody and as a part of the churchâs heritage Merbeckeâs setting is invaluable.

An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers, the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs, including sacred and secular works from simple, four-part settings to more expansive, yet accessible, repertoire in an exciting variety of styles. O Saving Victim was completed on 16th March, 2003, and was premiered by the choir of St Mary's Church, Goochland, VA, directed by Hope Armstrong Erb. The solo lines in this piece should blend with the rest of the chorus as much as possible. In large choirs, the solo lines in bars 21-22 and 26-30 may be sung by a pair or small group of people to preserve balance. This does not apply to the unaccompanied solos in bar 30-35. Zachary Wadsworth's 'vivid, vital, and prisimatic' music has established him as one of the leading composers of his generation, especially among those writing vocal, choral and operatic works. As winner of the 2011 King James Bible Composition Award, Wadsworth's anthem Out of the South Cometh the Whirlwind was performed by the choir of Westminster Abbey in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II. Other recent honours include awards from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, ASCAP, and the American Composers Forum, and performances by the Washington National Opera Chorus, Boston Metro Opera, Long Leaf Opera, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Atlanta Philharmonic Orchestra. Wadsworth's music is widely broadcast and distributed, with a recent commission from Choir and Organ magazine, and frequent airings on the BBC, NPR and CBC. / Choeur SATB

The composition is throughout built out of repetitive figuration in the accompaniment and closely imitative canonic fragments in the vocal parts. It is vocally demanding with large leaps to benegotiated and wide vocal ranges. An ambitious uppervoice choir might welcome the challenge - though I'm not sure many congregations would be up for it.

Motette. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Motet of an unknown arranger [ca. 1820], based on th Adagio of the Serenade KV 361 [Gran Partita]. The motet Quis te comprehendat, K-Anhang 110, is based on the Adagio in Mozarts Wind Serenade K. 361, the Gran Partita. The arrangement of this instrumental movement with the addition of a four-part choir deserves to be regarded as a successful example of the practice of parody, on a higher level than many less accomplished arrangements of the period. As in most of those cases the identity of the arranger is unknown, but his sensitive treatment of the original points to a gifted musician. Characteristic accompanying figures are given to the strings, while the solo violin andthe organ appear melodically. The homophonic choral setting, whose Latin words are a religious song of praise with no specific liturgical connection, is based on the works harmonic substance. The vocal parts follow the framework and compactly fill out the accompanying instrumental writing. / Mottet / Répertoire / Choeur SATB, 2 Cors, Violon Solo, 2 Violons, Alto,

Motette. Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Motet of an unknown arranger [ca. 1820], b...(+)
