Tchaikovsky's last opera - on a libretto by the composer's brother Modest based on the drama by the Danish author Henrik Hertz - derives its life-blood from its poetic moments and the symbol-laden portraits of the leading characters: the blind young Yolanta is kept prisoner in a paradisiacal garden by her father who fears for her purity and her virginity and seeks to protect her from the adversities of the world. To do so he orders everyone to keep her ignorant of the fact that she is blind. A doctor warns that she will only be able to see when she is ready to do so herself no matter what fears might result from a complete experience of the world. When the young Vaudemont breaks into her secluded world and the two fall in love he frees her from her ignorance and explains the significance of color and light. It is through her love for him that she is finally able to see. At the beginning of the work Tchaikovsky depicts Yolanta's dark world with an introduction scored exclusively for winds. It is not until her discovery of the unknown world of love and sight that Tchaikovsky uses a warm string sound. This is what many of the composer's contemporaries found disturbing about the opera.Tchaikovsky's Yolanta occupies a special place in the composer's operatic oeuvre: for one it has a happy ending an apotheosis of light and love with a religiously stamped closing chorale; for another it is one of Tchaikovsky's few stage works without any reference to Russian history. Instead the work's pronounced lyricism points to the composer's closeness to French culture. which exerted a strong influence on Russia in the 19th century. The opera was given its world premiere at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg in 1892. It had been commissioned along with the ballet The Nutcracker. Next to the production by the Munchner Rundfunkorchester Yolanta was also successfully rehabilitated in a recent staged production at the Baden-Baden Festival with Anna Netrebko and Piotr Beczala as the lovers. Outside of Germany the operatic rarity was performed in Toulouse Tokyo San Sebastian and Monte Carlo. In closing another quote from the Suddeutsche Zeitung: 'Yolanta' is an operatic rediscovery of a work that was truly 'wrongly forgotten'.

One of the world’s most salient features is that there is so much trouble, but one of the world’s deepest hopes is for something better. The tension between these two ideas is the binding theme of this collection of choral works. The centerpiece of the collection, Knut Nystedt’s Prayers of Kierkegaard, is surrounded by a myriad of contemporary settings of American folk songs and spirituals. The contemplation of trouble and transcendence heard throughout these songs is given a fitting response in Shawn Kirchner’s joyful work I’ll Be on My Way. This disc is a meditative and healing listen in the midst of difficult times. The Missouri State University Chorale is the flagship choral ensemble at Missouri State University. Made up of a diverse group of singers from a variety of backgrounds, this renowned ensemble performs at an incredibly high level and enjoys an international reputation. The MSU Chorale has performed regularly at conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, Missouri Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Education, and has toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Cameron F. LaBarr is director of choral studies at Missouri State University, where he leads a comprehensive choral program including eight choirs and a graduate program in choral conducting. He holds a Bachelor of Music from Missouri State University and earned a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of North Texas. Additionally, Dr. LaBarr has completed further study in choral music and conducting with Simon Carrington and Alice Parker. Dr. LaBarr has worked as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator across North America, Europe, Africa and Asia, recently at the China International Chorus Festival, the Bali International Choir Festival, and the Limerick Sings International Choral Festival (Ireland).

Robert Saxton 's Hortus Musicae , Book 1 was commissioned by Ian Richie for the 2013 City of London Festival with funds provided by the John S. Cohen Foundation. The first performance was given by Clare Hammond on June 24th 2013 at the church of St Mary Le Bow. The title, less 'literal' in Latin than in the vernacular, refers to the idea of an allegorical/metaphysical garden (reference to a 'real', or existing, garden might be implied by Hortus Musicus) with various facets. The titles of the individual pieces/movements, with their respective garden image, are as follows: 1) Hortus Somniorum: a fleeting vision of a 'magical' garden 2) Hortus Temporis: a reflection of/on the floralclock described by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) in his [metaphysical] poem The Garden: How well the skilful gardener drew Of flowers and herbs this dial new Where from above the milder sun Does through a fragrant zodiac run; And, as it works, the industrious bee Computes its time as well as we. How could such sweet and wholesome hours Be reckoned but with herbs and flowers! 3) Hortus Cantus: A garden in which nature 'sings' (praises), in the manner of a 'chorale prelude' and ending with the cantus firmus transformed into bells. 4) Hortus Infinitatis: A meditative/formal garden representing Time suspended, in the form of a palindromic prolation canon combined with a harmonic ground (chaconne). 5) Saltatio Hortensis: A (summer) garden of dancing, celebratory nature. Its essence (and that of the entire cycle, both metaphorically and structurally/formally) is summed up in words spoken by Miranda in WH Auden's 1944 Tempest [Shakespeare]-inspired poem The Sea And The Mirror; So, to remember our changing garden, we Are linked as children in a circle dancing. Stephansdom is a new composition, descriptive of the iconic St. Stephan's Cathedral in central Vienna. Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition.St. Stephen's Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna's most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna's skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of themI. GroundbreakingThe first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen's Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen's was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues—from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire—before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord.II. StefflSteffl, the nickname for Stephansdom's soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom's north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna's skyline.III. 1945As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom's roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom's great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945.IV. Anton PilgrimAnton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen's organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese's love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna's most iconic sights. This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

The material for Jyrki Linjama's Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba (2018) and Sonata for violin solo (2019). The composer tells: The choice of topic and material was originally influenced by the place where the string trio would be premiered – the old church on the island of Seili (Själö) in the Turku archipelago. The bleak history of the mental hospital on the island invited images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the fine, bleak melody that this series of works began to emerge. Lasting 17 minutes, the sonata for solo violin has three movements, all of them embracing the folk choral material and Béla Bartók’s influence in different ways. It was premiered by Kaija Saarikettu at the Kaustinen Chamber Music Festival in 2020.

Olli Kortekangas (b. 1955) spent some time looking for a suitable chorale or theme after receiving a commission from Tomi Satomaa to compose a variation work for organ. It was foundsurprisingly close at hand, on his very own desk: The Partita is based on a chorale melody Kortekangas composed some years ago. The Partita has six movements performed without a break. The first presents the chorale melody itself, and the other five could be described as character pieces each based on some part of it or characteristic. The work was premiered at the Turku Organ Festival in July 2019.

Always distinctive. Always unique. The music of Rene Clausen always leaves a lasting impression upon those who listen and those who perform. All This Night pairs the contrasting poetry of William Austin (1587-1634) and Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1834) with contrasting musical styles. Both texts are poems of praise, referring to the wonders of creation and the power of the Almighty. Clausen very cleverly sets the medieval text with a contemporary feel-syncopation, some dissonance, modern harmonies - while the contemporary text is set in a more traditional, chorale-like, homophonic style.

Saxophone Quartet was composed especially for presentation at the Montana Saxophone Festival and is dedicated to the festival's director, saxophonist Brooke Ferris. The first movement, Calliope, juxtaposes mechanized rhythmic patterns against legato, lyric melodies. The second movement, Chorale, explores homophonic, harmonic textures which alternate with lyric and contrapuntal passages, and was adapted from a short work composed for saxophone quartet in 1975. The last movement is a fugue. Movements: Calliope * Chorale * Fugue.

Williamsburg Variations takes an original theme reminiscent of songs from early nineteenth-century America, and develops it over several variations into a variety of styles. A great introduction to the idea of theme and variations, this will make your developing orchestra sound great at any festival. This composition was inspired by a visit to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. The opening theme is reminiscent of a hymn of the eighteenth century with a hint of Chester in mm. 5 and 15. The variations are indicative of the hustle and bustle of colonial life that required a strong work ethic to survive, and the fife and drums variation shows a glimpse of Yankee Doodle in mm. 34-44. The theme should be played as a legato chorale. The variations are to be played with energy and the D Major Key will enhance that style. In mm. 34-44 the viola, cello and bass quarter notes should be short and accented to imitate field drums. The unison violins are the fifes in this fife-and-drum section. The final variation at m. 52 is a combination of three prior melodies so all lines are equally important. The melodic and moving parts create interest in all the instruments and should provide for an excellent festival or contest piece. I hope your students enjoy playing this music.

Kalevi Aho (b.1949) was only 18 years old when he completed his String Quartet no. 1 in g minor (1967). Nonetheless it was already the second one of its kind: the earlier string quartet in a minor got christened String Quartet No. 0 and banned from performing. The g minor quartet was heard the first time only 50 years after it was born, when the Kamus Quartet premiered it at the Musica Kalevi Aho Festival in Forssa on June 28, 2019. In Aho's home town, Forssa, it was not possible to study composition with a teacher: My model in this and the other works I composed while I was at school was all the mostly tonal music I had personally played on the violin or heard on the radio. The first movement, Moderato, begins in variation form, until followed by a fugue based on the variation theme. The initially lyrical second movement has a quick, virtuosic and light middle section. The third movement is a very quick scherzo that becomes dramatic, and the work ends with a chorale-like finale. The composer tells: When I got to study composition at the Sibelius Academy in autumn 1968 and showed the quartet to my teacher, Einojuhani Rautavaara, he said there was no point my studying tonal harmony and tonal formal constructions any longer; that I could do the exams in them straight away and start the courses in modern music resources there and then..

A big, fun festival piece. The children's choir part is prominent and often sings with or against the adults, so it's essential. The SATB writing varies from full chords to quick imitative passages to a quiet chorale-like section. The accompaniment is flashy and could be effectively done on either piano or organ. In fact, a full orchestra accompaniment is available, with winds in pairs, two percussionists, harp, and strings. Duration: 4:00.

This work is an extensive fantasy on Abide With Me, in the style of 19th century composers. It is dramatic, highly expressive, and very powerful. Suitable for festival service or recital. The American Organist (Nov 2001) provides the following review of the work: ...a rather robust chorale prelude on Abide With Me that eschews sentimentality and casts this old warhorse of a hymn in a more positive light. It's a piece many organists might like to look into. 20 pages Published by: Zimbel Press.

Dreamin’ Out Loud is a very accessible calypso chart that is reminiscent of Sonny Rollins’s well known calypso tunes. An introductory chorale gives way to a happy, toe-tapping groove over which a tuneful melody is presented. The basic chord progression will accommodate multiple soloists. Great vehicle for exploring different rhythms and providing variety to a concert or festival program. Outstanding!
