The tradition of the Christmas tree in Western Europe dates back to a time long before any Christianization had taken place. During the severely cold winter nights so it was believed evil spirits tried to ?kill? nature. Needle-leaved trees were the only ones which kept their green colour throughout the year and therefore became symbols of immortality. These ?living? trees said to be the work of benign spirits were brought into people?s houses to ward off evil life-threatening powers. In the 14th century people first started to decorate Christmas trees. It was a pagan custom originated by the inhabitants of Alsace. This custom was taken over by the Church in thecourse of the 15th and 16th century. At first the decoration consisted mainly of edibles such as apples and wafers but later small presents were added. Legend has it that the reformer Martin Luther was the first person to decorate a Christmas tree with candles. The flickering candle flames were meant to create the image of a starry sky in which Christ?s apparition could be recognized. The German organ-player Ernst Anschütz from Leipzig was the first person to notate the song ?O Tannenbaum? the melody being a well-known folk song. Next to ?Stille Nacht? ?O Tannenbaum? is the most famous German Christmas song now known throughout the world. In the United States of America the melody of ?O Tannenbaum? has even been used in four States (among which the State of Maryland) for their State song. In David Well?s arrangement the song is first heard as many of us know it. After this introduction however it is transformed into a solid rock version and the beat has been changed. In the second part the familiar three-four time is back but here the rhythm is different from the original. After the richly ornamented rock beat the basic theme can be heard once again and the composition is concluded in a festive manner.

Christmas Oratorio by Bob Chilcott for SATB and soloists (M-S T & B) with Org...(+)
Christmas Oratorio by Bob Chilcott for SATB and soloists (M-S T & B) with Organ and Flute or small ensemble. With this majestic work Chilcott takes on a landmark of the choral repertory the Christmas Oratorio. Words from St Luke and St Matthew are intertwined with 16th-19th-century poetry to create a compelling retelling of the Christmas story. Five hymn texts are set to new original melodies that take their place among the season's tradition of great hymnody and enable the audience or congregation to join in with the choir. As in the St John Passion much of the narrative is presented by a tenor soloist in the role ofEvangelist with focal points such as the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis and Rossetti's 'Love came down at Christmas' taken by mezzo-soprano and bass soloists. The chorus is integral to the storytelling assuming small character roles and taking centre stage in two unaccompanied movements. A solo Flute characterizes the angels and the mellow tones of the brass ensemble evoke a sense of festive tradition.

Owing to its Latin text Saint-Saëns? Christmas Oratorio has found admirers all...(+)
Owing to its Latin text Saint-Saëns? Christmas Oratorio has found admirers all over the world. Saint-Saëns avoids theatrical effects in his church music and relies almost entirely on homophonic choral writing. Here the operatic allusions so popular in his day have given way to a mixture of romantic élan and reminiscences of the Baroque. The subtitle reads ? dans le style de J. S. Bach? although the composer was unaware of Bach?s Christmas Oratorio. In this unusual form the oratorio of which the final movement is already a hit with many choruses is well-suited for performance during the Advent and Christmas seasons providing a welcome change fromBach.A ?discovery? for Christmas and Advent concertsRelatively simple choral writingSensitive organ arrangementThe Bärenreiter Choir & Organ Series presents great choral works in arrangements for soloists choir and organ; no orchestra is needed. The original orchestral parts have been transcribed into easy-to-play organ reductions whereby the contemporary tradition of such arrangements has been taken into consideration. In some cases the original organ versions by the composer were used. The organ parts are presented on three staves. The choir and solo parts always remain true to the original. You need only one edition for soloists singers and organist alike.

This extremely elaborate and at the same time tonally beautiful and sensuous work has made the name of Pachelbel known far beyond the confines of organ and church music his principal sphere of work. Most recently during Christmas the original version for three violins and basso continuo or even various arrangements could be heard on the radio or at shopping centres. To make this work accessible even to piano players Jürgen Krekel now presents an easily playable arrangement for the piano.

from Songs of Peace-This song is the second movement of Todd’s ‘Songs of Peace’ written in memory of the composer’s mother Iris Todd who died in 2012. The text (by the composer: ‘A gift so pure life so precious gifted to me’) is intentionally ambiguous suggesting both the gift of the Christ child and less specific gift of life. This work could therefore be used as a Christmas carol as well as more generally. The first verse with voices singing in unison presents a contemplative and memorable melody over characteristic jazz-inspired harmonies in the Piano (or Organ) accompaniment. This melody is then beautifullyinterwoven with a counter-melody as the voices split into two parts for the second verse.“Precious Moment” is featured on Tenebrae’s album ‘Lux et Veritas’.
