Applying good phrasing to music is like using good punctuation in written or spoken language. It involves the grouping of ideas to make the meaning of the words clear to the listener. The words are grouped into sentences, and the sentences are then grouped into paragraphs. The same is true when interpreting a piece of music.

Good phrasing requires a musician to interpret the notes he plays, and determine which notes need to be grouped together to form a complete musical idea.

Each song in Jazz Phrasing for Trombone is designed to train your ear to hear the logical grouping of phrases through the use of sequence and thematic development.

While the art of good phrasing involves the interpretation of note groupings and their relationships, it also involves deciding where you're going to take a breath.

Bad phrasing, spoken with extra breaths, disrupting the flow and grouping of the words:

The difference between these two sentences is very similar to the difference between a professional musician's phrasing and a student's phrasing. Both may be playing the correct notes with the correct rhythm, but the professional musician knows how to group the notes in a smooth, flowing fashion, while the student takes breaths at random, not even aware that he's disrupting the phrasing.

Sousa considered the Semper Fidelis March his finest work. He composed and dedicated it to the U.S. Marine Band in 1888 after a request by President Chester Arthur.
The instrumentation is for standard Brass Quintet: Trumpets in B-flat, Horn in F, Trombone & Tuba with optional piccolo trumpets and optional rubber hose for the horn in the middle section.
This fine arrangement by Steve Denroche is about 2 1/2 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed his String Quartet No. 1 in D, Op. 11, in 1871. Countless arrangements of its second movement, Andante cantabile, have been made, but it was not discovered until after his death that he, too, had arranged this movement in 1888, his version being for solo cello and strings. In this version, Tchaikovsky transposed the movement, originally in the key of B-flat Major, up to B Major.

The singing melody is based on a popular Russian folk song, and it lends itself quite well for performance on trombones.

This arrangement premiered February 14, 1997, at the Texas Music Educators' Association Convention in San Antonio, TX.
