One of Percy Aldridge Grainger's most popular encores was improvisations on English Morris Dance tunes that he programmed as Country Gardens. An instant hit, Grainger finalized this setting in spring 1918, and after publication in 1919, the sales of the sheet music broke publishing records and brought in the sort of steady income that is the envy of composers everywhere. While he used the funds to subsidize the careers of many fellow artists, Grainger became so identified with this rather lightweight piece that he came to despise it. Publisher G. Schirmer, wishing to capitalize on the popularity of Country Gardens, assigned Adolf Schmid, one of their in-house writers, to create this excellent orchestral version published in 1925. Schmid was an Austrian-American composer of some stature who, as a staff writer for the firm G. Schirmer, created orchestral versions of Grainger's Irish Tune from County Derry and Children's March, as well as music by numerous other composers. Schmid's orchestration served as the source material for a band version of Country Gardens that appeared in 1931, attributed to Tom Clark. The following note appeared on the concert band Synoptic Score (a most un-Grainger-like term): String-Bass and Harp (or any other) parts from Adolf Schmid's Arrangement of this number for orchestra (Galaxy No. 269) may be used with this band arrangement, affirming the relationship between Schmid's orchestration and Clark's band version. Leroy Anderson (1908-1975), ever-popular in the concert hall for his light orchestral pieces, found a great musical ally in the Boston Pops Orchestra under its director, Arthur Fiedler. Premiering many of his works, they introduced to the world such gems as Sleigh Ride, Jazz Pizzicato, and The Syncopated Clock. In the 1950s, Anderson began to record his music under the Decca label, and out of these sessions came a short piece for orchestra, THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING, first recorded on June 25, 1954. A solo horn introduces the melody, which drifts through the orchestra into an idyllic finish. The sarabande originated in the early 17th century and is a stately dance in triple time. It was popular in France and Spain but as a dance it quickly spread throughout the courts of Europe and the style was soon adopted into instrumental music in dance suites for solo instruments as well as orchestra. Something of this style has influenced Simple Sarabande and although its harmonic language is perhaps more up-to-date it could be seen as a ‘period piece’.

Simple Sarabande ist im Stil der ursprünglichen Sarabande, einem würdevollen höfischen Tanz aus dem 17. Jahrhundert im 3/4-Takt, geschrieben, wenn auch Philip Sparke für seine Komposition einen etwas moderneren harmonischen Ausdruck wählte. Einfachheit und leichte fließende Bewegungen sind die Schlüsselworte in diesem Stück, in dem Ihr Blasorchester sich ganz auf die Schönheit von Ton und Phrasierung konzentrieren kann.

La sarabande est une danse au caractère digne, sur un rythme ternaire lent, dont l’origine remonte la première moitié du XVIIe siècle. Très appréciée en France et en Espagne, elle conquiert rapidement l’ensemble des cours européennes. La sarabande s’intègre alors dans la musique instrumentale et devient un mouvement fondamental de la suite de danses. On retrouve quelques éléments stylistiques de cette danse dans Simple Sarabande. La structure harmonique reste néanmoins plus moderne.

Part of the British folk revival of the early 20th century, Gustav Holst's (1874-1934) Somerset Rhapsody consists of his interpretations of three English folk tunes from the Somerset region: The Sheep-Shearing Song, High Germany, and True Love's Farewell. Holst dedicated this piece, his first major critical success, to Cecil Sharp, a chronicler of English folk music who collected the songs that Holst adapted. Holst intended the cycle to tell a story of a young couple whose relationship is interrupted by war. Somerset Rhapsody premiered in London in April 1910. Programme Note Poul Ruders WIND-DRUMMING WIND-DRUMMING was written in 1979 on a commission from The Danish Percussion Ensemble. The piece is a clash of two kinds of sound-associations, the mystic, exotic impact of Latin-American drumming, and the more well dressed reputation of Western concert-instruments, in this case a wind-quintet (w. electric flute). The two instrumental camps either melt into one soft humming ritual or are split wide apart, the winds tearing their way through the undergrowth of rainforest-drumming. There is more than one way of getting on to WIND-DRUMMING: obviously it is about the confrontation of two incongruent ways of living, a lament on the damage done tothe tropical rainforests of the world by modern civilisation. One can hear it plainly as a direct rhythm-show, a downright number or a joyous homage to the most exiting kind of folkloristic music at all: the carnal spell of the Brazilian Samba. Poul Ruders.

This hymn was commissioned by â??Antwerpen 93â?. And this city, on the banks of the river Schelde has been nominated â??Cultural Capital of Europeâ? for 1993. The work-group â??animatieâ? took the initiative and commissioned a hymn, which -as the finale to a grand open-air event on 27th March- was premièred by hundreds of musicians from all over Europe. Philippe Langlet (France) was the conductor at this majestic occasion.Musically speaking the piece can no doubt be labeled easy. Indeed it is meant to represent a hymn, playable by all in different instrumental combinations. Consequently a variable instrumentation was chosen and a type of music, which by native is easily accessible anduncomplicated.The conductor is free -in the instrumentation- to score this piece according to his own taste. It is perhaps advisable to use the sharp brass in the forte parts, in order to make the range in the sound of the orchestra as colouful as possible. The percussion parts are not absolutely essential, so that the hymn can also be performed without percussion.

His music has always been strongly jazz orientated, and he has played with many of the legendary greats including Gerry Mulligan, Clark Terry and trombonist Bob Brookmeyer. He composed the television themes for: Russell Harty, Pam Ayres, Freddie Starr, Russ Abbott, Punchlines, Game for a Laugh, Blind Date, Child’s Play and Beadle’s About Music Match.

Laurie has appeared on television regularly including This is your Life (as a surprise guest for Parkinson, Wogan, Tarbuck, Ernie Wise, Rolf Harris, and Benny Green as well as being a proud owner of the Big Red Book himself). He has been musical director for Engelbert Humperdinck, Judy Garland, Dame Edna Everage, Stéphane Grappelli, The Wogan Show, Marion Montgomery, Gilbert O’Sullivan, Dame Cleo Laine, Elaine Stritch, Sacha Distel, Frankie Howerd, Sammy Cahn, George Hamilton IV, Barry Took, Sir David Frost, Mel Torme, Nana Mouskouri, Clive James, Val Doonican, Kiri Te Kanawa, Ronnie Corbett, Ronnie Barker, Sir Les Patterson, Elaine Paige, Michael Parkinson, Jack Allen, Bob Monkhouse, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli and Jack Jones.

The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music selected his composition Walking Fingers as an examination piece.

He has presented matinee concerts at the Barbican where he introduced young musical talent. He and Marion Montgomery have formed the Montgomery Holloway Music Trust a charity, which aims to afford young musical talent (jazz, classical and inspirational) the opportunity to study and perform. The Trust also has a yearly seminar in which Laurie instructs in the Art of Accompaniment. The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) awarded Laurie the Gold Badge of Merit in 1993 for his services to the music industry.[/bg_collapse]
