Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's horn concertos: the Mozart expert Henrik Wiese edits the central work genre of Viennese classicism according to the current status of international Mozart research. Mozart wrote the Horn Concerto K. 417 - like the other works of this genre as well - for his horn-playing friend Joseph Leutgeb. The jokes which the composer made at Leutgeb's expense are wellknown. For example, he called the dedicatee a 'donkey” in the autograph, and, as Henrik Wiese evidences in his preface, Mozart also occasionally enjoyed a bit of tomfoolery with the soloist in the musical text as well.
Otherwise the editor's task was anything but amusing. The main source - the autograph score - is incomplete: missing are the close of Movement I as well as the entire slow middle movement. For these two sections, Wiese used a copy of the score from the archive of the publisher Johann André. The unusual circumstance that Mozart generally left the horn part almost unmarked recurs in the Concerto K. 417 and was deliberately maintained in the Urtext edition./ Répertoire / Conducteur

The two-movement, incompletely transmitted Horn Concerto in D major K. 412 was long considered as Mozart?s first horn concerto - it is, however, his last, and was written between March and December 1791. Mozart undertook revisions in the autograph ? which contains the most important orchestral parts next to the entire solo horn part ? in order to adjust the work to the modest technical abilities of the planned soloist Joseph Leutgeb. Mozart revised and completed the first movement, eliminated lower notes in the solo part, rewrote difficult passages and expanded orchestral interludes to give Leutgeb additional breath rests. Mozart also made similar simplifications in the second movement as well, but his early death prevented the completion of the work.Robert D. Levin reconstructed both versions of the concerto on the basis of the autograph. Next to the version revised by Mozart (?post correcturam?), he now presents the original version (?ante correcturam?) for the first time in a musical text revised and supplemented according to rigorous philological criteria. / Conducteur

Concerto For String

Concerto for String Orchestra - the magnum opus of Grayna Bacewicz (1909-1969) ...(+)
Concerto for String Orchestra - the magnum opus of Grayna Bacewicz (1909-1969) the outstanding composer and violinist - was composed in 1948 and at once became one of the most frequently performed works of this Polish artist. This masterpieceof neoclassicism fascinates as much by its invention and virtuosic briliance as its harmonious combination of formal elements of a traditional nature with new tonal ideas. The form of the three-movement Concerto oscillates between that of the baroqueconcerto grosso and the early classical sonata cycle. The neoclassical tendency is evident above all in the articulation of the musical structure in keeping with the rigours of periodicity and the manner of developing thematic threads derived fromthem while the concertato character of particular movements and the generally linear texture indicate baroque connections. The first movement (Allegro) - in the form of an early classical sonata allegro - begins with a subject with energeticfigurations emblematic for the whole piece and based on a constant pendulum-like semiquaver movement anchored securely on D. It is precisely because of the nature of this subject that Bacewiczs work has been compared to the Brandenburg Concertosby Jan Sebastian Bach The second movement (Andante) while retaining its concertato charakter is at the same time an example of the composers ability to create emotionally serene lyrical moods and her sense of cantilena derived from the spiritof romantic song (a motto-subject presented at the beginning by cello solo). In this movement it is both the process of evolution and the instrumental colouring which constitute the constructional agents forming here a self-containedvalue. In thethird movement (Vivo) the composer returns to her favourite type of music understood as an expression of pure motion in the form of figural motives with infinite transformational possibilities. The spontaneity of the music the constant mutabilityof the tonal situations and the sophisticated acerbic harmonies - as Witold Lutosawski described them - form a colourful mosaic built in the structural skeleton of a sonata rondo. Concerto for String Orchestra is not only proof of thestylizing tendency of the composer but also of an unerring intuition concerning the technical and expressive possibilities inherent in a string instruments ensemble. Concerto Orchestral

Full Score-The Horn Concerto was written in 1971 and was the first of the ten co...(+)
Full Score-The Horn Concerto was written in 1971 and was the first of the ten concertos Gregson has composed to date. It is dedicated to the English horn player Ifor James who died in 2004 and was originally written for brass band. However in 2013 Gregson was asked by Paul Klein Principal Horn of the Ulster Orchestra and BBC Northern Ireland to undertake an orchestral version for him. Gregson decided to score the concerto for a late Haydn sized orchestra with the addition of a percussionist to add some colour to the texture. The concerto takes as its starting point the Mozartian model namely a sonata form opening movement a song-like slow movement and a jaunty rondo finale. The opening movement opens with a strident motif built on rising fourths announced by the soloist and answered by the orchestra. This pattern of ‘question/answer’ continues until a climactic moment breaks the tension and is followed by a lyrical second subject announced by the soloist over undulating rhythmic patterns on strings. The music is developed and recapitulated from these ideas with the lyrical idea returning via solo clarinet with horn answering in canon. The movement ends with the strident fourths this time in inversion. The slow movement is in tertiary form and opens with an expansive melody from the soloist over a repetitive harmonic and melodic pattern. This is expanded and developed building all the while in intensity until it is interrupted by cadenza-like passages on the horn and muted brass. After a brief climax the music subsides into a moment of emotional serenity before the opening melody returns this time on solo oboe with the horn interweaving its own answering melodic lines. The rondo finale is more light-hearted in mood with a catchy 6/8 tune at its heart. It is twice interrupted first by an idea built on long held chromatic notes from the soloist against a highly rhythmic backdrop (wind brass and snare drum) then by a slower more thoughtful melodic idea. A Facsimile Edition of the Autographs-Only about a tenth of Mozarts works were printed during his lifetime the rest having been published without the benefit of his supervision. This long-awaited edition of the autograph score offers a rare opportunity to see Mozarts violin concertosaccording to the composers intentions. Thanks to the well-preserved condition of the original manuscripts and Mozarts legible handwriting these reproductions of his scores can be used for study reference and performance. In addition to the fiveworks Concerto No. 1 in B Flat K. 207; Concerto No. 2 in D K. 211; Concerto No. 3 in G K. 216; Concerto No. 4 in D K. 218; and Concerto No. 5 in A K. 219 the volume includes two additional pieces the Adagio in E K. 261 and the Rondo in BFlat K. 261a. The first edition of this volume was published in a limited edition in 1986 and has been virtually unobtainable for many years. Two informative introductory essays by violinist Gabriel Banat who located the manuscripts missing sinceWorld War II supplement the collection: the first one traces Mozarts relationship with the violin and the other examines the history and importance of these manuscripts thought to have been forever lost. This outstanding edition offers teachers violinists conductors musicologists and Mozart enthusiasts an extraordinary chance to possess a score reproduced from the masters own hand.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto in G was written by the composer in 1778. The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on the Flute making it one of the most important Concerti in the instrument's repertoire. Concerto in G is in three movements; 1. Allegro maestoso 2. Adagio ma non troppo and 3. Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of D major. A Dutch flautist of the time Ferdinand de Jean commissioned Mozart for four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However thecomposer who famously disliked the Flute only completed three quartets and two concertos. Instead of composing a second concerto Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. This edition of Mozart's Concerto in G includes cadences by virtuosos Taffanel Gaubert and Bozza making for an unmissable version of the famed work.

Written in 1803 by Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) this Trumpet Concerto in E-flat Major is a classical piece of the Trumpet repertoire. Composed in the spirit of Mozart and initially for the keyed-Trumpet it was re-discovered in 1958 by a Yale student after 150 years of inertia due to the obsolescence of the instrument for which it was made. This edition offers a transposition in E-flat Major (initially in E Major) adapted to the instruments in use today. The other instruments to be involved in this concerto are a Flute two Oboes two Clarinets two Bassoons two Horns Timpani and Strings. Hummel?s Trumpet Concerto begins with an orchestra onlyfirst movement in a sonata theme which is repeated with the inclusion of the soloist. This Allegro Spirito sounds reminiscent of the Haffner Symphony (No. 35 in D Major) by Mozart but distinguished itself by a second theme. The second movement Andante is more melodic with the trumpet which holds long notes. Finally the Rondo offers a blissful and bright end to the Concerto. Former student of Mozart Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837) was a brilliant composer pianist conductor and teacher. Evolving at the same period as Beethoveen he became as famous as him and wrote numerous concertos (for Piano Oboe Trumpet Violin and others) operas and some wind music pieces.
