Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!

With this magnificent setting of Psalm 136 from the Psalmen Davids of 1619, Heinrich Schütz broke new ground: he brought the court trumpet ensemble into the realm of art music (similar to Michael Praetorius at around the same time). Alongside the trumpet ensemble, a five-part ripieno choir ensures musical splendor, whilst the leading role is given two two favoriti choirs, one high (SSTT) and one low (TTBB, scored for tenor and three trombones). Schütz did not write out the trumpet ensemble parts, but made do with notating just the middle part, around which the other parts were to improvise. For this critical edition, the trumpet ensemble is available separately in a reconstruction by the internationally-famous baroque trumpet specialist Edward H. Tarr. This edition is also used for the recording of the Psalm with the Dresdner Kammerchor conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2004500.

This festive arrangement was used at both the US papal visits of Pope Benedict XVI (2008) and Pope Francis (2015), and can be a thrilling addition to important occasions such as anniversary or dedication events. Following the opening fanfare, verse 1 is scored for unison voices, brass and organ, verse 2 for 4-part choir with solo trumpet, and verse 3 for unaccompanied choir.  After a key change, the final rousing verse employs unison choir, descant, assembly and all instruments. The brass writing is striking and the vocal parts require only a minimum of rehearsal.

While not exactly a full hymn concertato, there are definite places for the congregation to participate, first on the short concluding phrase, and then for the whole fourth verse. An extended organ and flute introduction undulates and shimmers, perfectly setting up the text by David Mowbray, which is a prayer for the creative powers of the Holy Spirit to inspire the arts of worship. The setting of Richard Proulx's melody uses approachable SATB writing, occasionally featuring the women's and men's voices alone in either unison or two parts.

Buona passeggiata.

The renowned Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa was given three separate tasks for this commission: it should be a short, attractive piece of music that is easy to listen to; it should be suitable as a choral exercise; and it should be fitting as anencore for the regular annual concert of the client. So it was that Yagisawa composed a glorious, warm-sounding work that satisfies all three requirements, and additionally serves as an excellent intermezzo in any concert.
