During the eighteenth century a person called 'the Dance Master' made his appear...(+)
During the eighteenth century a person called 'the Dance Master' made his appearance in Ireland. He was a travelling dance-teacher who moved from one village to another to teach the people there how to dance. They were often flamboyant personalities gorgeously dressed and holding a staff in one hand. In order to teach their pupils the difference between their right and left leg the dance master used to tie a small bunch of straw or hay to their leg and then would order them to either lift their 'hay-leg' or their 'straw-leg'. The dancing masters used to stay in one particular village for about six weeks (if they were not claimed by a neighbouringvillage) after which they continued their journey. Having a famous dance master gave a village a certain distinction and did not seldom lead to boasting and pride. Also on account of the popularity of Celtic music in general at the moment William Vean was inspired to writing 'The Irish Dance Master'. He 'teaches' you two dances the Reel and the Jig. In between these two dances there is a short breathing space during which a traditional Irish rhythm can be enjoyed.

The Boy Friend is a three-act musical and was originally presented as a new musical comedy of the 1920's at the Players' Theatre on 14th April 1953. The first public presentation was at Wyndhams Theatre on 14th January 1954. It's a perennial saga of boy meets girl boy loses girl through a misunderstanding before the truth is eventually revealed prompting a collected sigh of relief and everyone lives happily ever after. Despite its all to familiar storyline this song-and-dance show about a finishing school on the French Riviera in the Roaring Twenties remains popular tours regularly and succeeds despite its old-fashioned façade its outmoded innocence and itscontrived storyline.

In the tripartite 'Cowboy Suite' Alan Laken takes us to the Wild West the domain of cowboys indians trappers and other fortune hunters. Around 1890 the west coast of America was reached which in effect meant the end of the Wild West. Its stories however survived and have been a source of inspiration for many books films and of course music. Some characters such as Jesse James Billy the Kid and Buffalo Bill are forever linked to these tales. In the 'Cowboy Suite' we first hear the 'Hoedown'. At the end of an exhausting workday the labourers used to lay down their tools among others the 'hoes' and spontaneously began to play music on the instruments which they then possessed (guitars fiddles and banjos) and to dance. After being jolted on the 'Wagon Trail' we reach the third part the 'Cowboy Roundup'. In this last part it becomes clear that as a cattle driver it is imperative to stay firmly seated in the saddle. As the cattle are rounded up i.e. driven together spectacular things happen.

Hawkes Pocket Scores HPS 712-In 1941 Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera was commissioned to write a Ballet comprising One Act and Five scenes that was based on and would depict pastoral life in Argentina. He closely based his score on the great epic poem Mart n Fierro by Jose Hernandez which tells the story of the Argentinean cowboys or Gaucho — nomadic and heroic figures who are the subject of much of the country's folklore. The story tells of a city boy who watches and falls in love with a country maiden. Despite initial contempt for him her feelings turn to admiration as he demonstrates he can perform the rough and difficult work and proves his skill in taming wild horses.Estancia is set over the passage of a single day: dawn morning afternoon night and dawn. Ginastera has not only captured the rhythms of life on a Estancia or ranch but also provided an insight into the gaucho's now diminished way of life. This volume is the Hawks Pocket score containing all the dances from the ballet in Study Score Format.

Guitar Tunes - English
Folk Songs: Guitar Solo: Guitar notes and tablatures Mel Bay
Classical Guitar Tunes - English Folk Songs. This book presents 42 English folk ...(+)
Classical Guitar Tunes - English Folk Songs. This book presents 42 English folk songs arranged for the intermediate classic guitarist in standard notation with phrase and dynamic markings plus light fingering. The collection includes popular melodies like Sprig of Thyme, Seventeen Come Sunday, and Blow the Wind Southerly, but also lesser known but no less beautiful tunes like Cupid the Pretty Ploughboy, Dabbling in the Dew and Saucy Sailor. All the arrangements present the basic tune faithfully and simply before offering more elaborate and sophisticated variations suitable for concert performance. Without compromising their sophistication, these polyphonic arrangements are elegant and idiomatic to the guitar, all but devoid of excessive physical demands; even barré chords are kept to a minimum so the player can relax and focus on tone and interpretation. The primary objective of this collection is to draw attention to these deserving melodies, some of which are now rarely heard. Longtime fans of the genre will recognize a few songs once performed by folk-rock groups like Steeleye Span and The Fairport Convention, here presented anew for the solo classic guitar. ?It?s an excellent collection - good to play for pleasure, good for learning and consolidating rhythm, good for sight-reading. Just marvelous. It should meet a lot of needs. Gilbert Biberian. ?These are very accessible arrangements of 42 English folk tunes, some of which are familiar and many others which deserve to be better known. They are all tuneful and have interesting harmonies and rhythms in arrangements which will be well within the reach of intermediate guitarists. These fine settings would be useful pieces for a teacher looking for supplementary material and also for the performer looking for unhackneyed repertoire. They are thoughtfully presented with good fingering and phrasing, with idiomatic guitar writing and interesting harmonies. Congratulations to Peter Worley for presenting this compendium of gems from a lesser known tradition.? Gerald Garcia
