A work for solo violin and orchestra, commissioned by Donald McDonald for the 21st birthday of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and the 60th birthday of the composer. It was first performed in November 1993 in Glasgow, by James Clark and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Maxwell Davies. The spell is one quoted by George Mackay Brown in his book An Orkney Tapestry: 'Let not plough be put to acre except a fiddle cross first the furrow.' Davies's dancing concerto imagines the fiddler following a route from field to field, from dance to dance, accompanied by a bunch of companions in the form of an orchestra. As the music goes on, so it gets brighter and livelier, moving from the dark colouring of clarinets, bassoons and strings to full ensemble with prominent brass and (solo) tuned percussion, as if the dancers as much as the fields were beginning to glow with new life. Score (miniature). Duration c. 20mins.

This saxophone concerto, written in one continuous movement with a wide variety of tempi, celebrates the talents of John Harle, who has been a central player in the Michael Nyman Band for over ten years. The title has a double reference: on the one hand to the circular orientation dances which a foraging bee performs to communicate the location of food source, and on the other hand to my setting of 'Where the bee sucks', composed for Peter Greenaway's film Prospero's Books and quoted sporadically during the concerto. However, most of the material is derived from a 4-chord sequence that John once overheard me playing and which he expressed a particular liking for. -Michael Nyman.

It's a privilege to write a new work for my friend, the pipa master Ms. Wu Man to perform in the 05/06 concert season. Remembering the first time we worked together in 1991, Wu Man premiered my solo piece The Points on the age-old Chinese traditional instrument, with her adventurous virtuosity and sensibility in the piece with new musical concept and language, at the NewWorkOctober concert series at Columbia University in New York, presented by New Music Consort. I have been very happy to keep track with her new experiment and success in the new music field since then. Again, in 2001, I have composed a trio for her to play with Yo-Yo Ma and Young-Nam Kim, commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota for the Hun Qiao project. Wu Man loved the piece so much that she commissioned me another new work to perform this time. In Chinese cultural tradition, in which I am deeply rooted, music is a part of an organic art form, along with poetry, calligraphy and painting. I am glad that Wu Man suggested to create our new work together with visual artist Catherine Owens. We are going to combine the art forms together in one. I got my inspiration from three ancient poems, which are drawn in Chinese calligraphy, with exaggerated dancing lines and shapes in layers of ink. The music would go with image projection in Chinese painting according to the poems. Written for Wu Man and commissioned by the Walton Arts Center, Fayetteville, AR, the duet Ancient Dances is written for pipa and a set of percussion instruments (including a pair of naobo, finger cymbals, and bongos; a Japanese high woodblock, a triangle, 3 Beijing Opera gongs in small, medium and large sizes, a suspended cymbal and a conga). It consists of three movements of music - Cheering, Longing, and Wondering, in which the music abstractly represents various expressions, in different textures and tempi, inspired by the text in the three Chinese poems by Li Bai from Tang Dynasty: 1) Riding on My Skiff; 2) Night Thoughts; 3) The Cataract of Mount Lu. The flying lines, as like mysterious and vivid ancient dances, bring the music, the calligraphy, and the painting all together in our work. --Chen Yi.It's a privilege to write a new work for my friend, the pipa master Ms. Wu Man to perform in the 05/06 concert season. Two dances for flute and harp from Peter Maxwell Davies' ballet Caroline Mathilde. A new instrumentation restores this linked pair of dances from Davies's second full-length ballet, Caroline Mathilde based on the story of the eighteenth-century British princess sent in marriage to Denmark, to the eighteenth-century milieu of the work's setting and musical world. The period manners - a gavotte in the first dance, a gigue at the start of the second - are typically overlaid with the composer's Scottishness. In general the harp has an accompanying role, but it comes forward alone in the second movement, which ends with bravura from both instruments. These two dances were first performed in September 1993 at the Northlands Festival by David Nicholson and Eluned Pierce. Score and flute part. Duration c. 5mins. Harp part edited by Elune Pierce.

French pianist, arranger, composer and conductor, Jean-Michel Defaye (b. 1932) entered the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of ten years old. His successful compositions and arrangements were mainly for brass, Two Dances, composed in 1954, and adapted for Bass Trombone and Piano by Donald Knaub, being no exception. With a typical performance lasting about eight minutes, Defaye's Two Dances are named Sacred Dance and Secular Dance. Defaye's understanding of the Trombone is clear throughout the work, with use of exciting techniques and contrasts. For all aspiring bass trombonists wishing to vary and expand their repertoire, Two Dances by Jean-Michel Defaye is essential..

'This set of miniatures is based on traditional dance songs of the Yupik Eskimo people of Western Alaska. In their original forms, these melodies would be sung in unison. The first, third and fifth songs would be accompanied by frame drums. The second and fourth are game songs, for jumping rope and juggling pebbles. Aside from the obvious difference in instrumentation, my settings of these songs differ from the Yup'ik originals in other respects. I have extended and varied the melodies, and added countermelodies, ostinato figurations, introductions, interludes and codas. The first four melodies are drawn from the collection Yup'ik Eskimo songs, compiled by Thomas F. Johnston, and Tupou L. Pulu, and published by the University Of Alaska. The fifth was 'loaned' to me by Yup'ik singer and dancer Chuna McIntyre, who learned it in his village of Eek, Alaska. The poems preceding each piece are rough translations of the words to the songs. These verses are often cryptic and enigmatic. Their obscurity is increased because some of the words or their meanings have been lost, over time.' - John Luther Adams.

Paul Creston was one of the most performed composers of the 1940s and '50s, and his music remains important and relevant today. His unique rhythmic and harmonic style is apparent in Five Little Dances, his only work for piano. Robert Longfield's marvelous adaptation for band retains the character and charm of these delightful dances. Dur: 6:40.

Includes two copies of the performance score These pieces are inspired by the music and spirit of the Athabascan people of Alaska's boreal forest. The first and third dances are based on songs by Joe Beetus, a Koyukon elder from the village of Huslia. The second dance is based on a short traditional song of the Dena'ing people of the Kenai Peninsula, as remembered by the late Peter Kalifornsky and transcribed by the late Thomas F. Johnston. In their original setting these melodies would be sung in unison, with no harmony or counterpoint. Working as a composer in the Western tradition, I have extended and transformed them in many ways. I have 'borrowed' and 'set' these melodies with permission and with the hope that my treatment of them conveys my profound respect for their origins. The second and third pieces are derived from my setting of poems by Adeline Peter Raboff written in the dialect of her Gwich'in people, who inhabit the country from Arctic Village to Old Crow. I offer this music as a gesture of respect to the first peoples of the Northern Interior and the Kenai Peninsula. - John Luther Adams.

Folk dances are widespread throughout Greece. In this composition formed by three movements, Franco Cesarini elaborates some typicaldances of the Greek folk tradition by making use of three traditional folk songs, developing them freely. The first movement is a kalamatianos, a festive dance that has roots dating all the way back to antiquity and is considered the national dance of Greece. Its most distinctive feature is the irregular 7/8 rhythm. Depending on the occasion and the dancers’ level of skill, certain steps may be taken as jumps or squats. The second movement represents a zeibekiko. Contrary to most of the traditional Greek dances, the zeibekiko is not a dance performed in a group; it doesn't have any step to follow, only certain figures. The third movement, an hasapiko, is a traditional dance with roots from Constantinople. It serves as the inspiration for the “sirtaki†and progresses from a slow to a faster pace. The hasapiko is performed in a line or open circle formation, with each dancer placing his on the neighbour's shoulders.
