14 Middle-Grade Duets From The Last Four Centuries. With so many young flautists in the musical world today it is only natural to pair them up and give them some wonderful duets to play. It's amazing what 'big” music, these two small instruments can cope with - indeed, in the eighteenth century the flute duet was almost the gramophone record of the time as countless operatic arias were brought to the public in arrangements for this pairing. Monteverdi’s opera “L’Orfeo”, based on the legend of Thracian singer Orpheus and his love of Eurydice, is a masterpiece of musical declamation and ornamentation. It was first performed during the 1607 carnevale in the “Palazzo Ducale” in Mantua. When an edition remains true to its sources, this certainly does not mean that it is not also practical to use, as is demonstrated in this Bärenreiter edition of Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo”. Edited by Rinaldo Alessandrini, the new publication follows the Bärenreiter edition of Monteverdi’s “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria”. Two contemporary prints of “L’Orfeo” from the years 1609 and 1615 have been passed down to us. Four copies of each of these prints still survive today in public libraries. The later print includes many corrections to the earlier edition and was accordingly used as the primary source for this Bärenreiter edition. However, when solving musical problems the editor frequently follows the more coherent style of the earlier print. The numerous interesting variants, not only between the two editions but also amongst the eight surviving copies, are listed in the critical commentary. This edition of “L’Orfeo” offers in addition to Monteverdi’s somewhat sparse original figures also figures added to the bass line by the editor. The continuo player should, however, feel free to follow his own judgment. The notation has been, when necessary, adapted to suit modern practice, for example with regard to the clefs. The sections that were originally written in “chiavetta” have been transposed a fifth lower. Robert Schumann wrote his Fantasy Pieces for clarinet and piano in the course of two days in February 1849. Only a few days later they were premiered by Clara Schumann and the Dresden clarinetist Johann Gottlieb Kotte. Initially choosing the title Soirée Pieces for his works, Schumann finally decided to have them published as Fantasy Pieces, thereby emphasizing their poetical aspects. These connotations are also at the centre of clarinetist Elisabeth Eichenberg's notes on interpretation with special reference to the contemporary aesthetics of the clarinet sound. The edition is based on the first edition published in 1849 and also incorporates subsequent corrections in Schumann's personal copy. The compositional manuscript that has survived served as an important corrective. Besides the original clarinet part in A the edition also includes a transposed part for the B clarinet in order to make these standard works of the Romantic clarinet repertoire available to a wider circle of the clarinet community. / Clarinette Et Piano

These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts.
