Fiser Lubos - Sonata Iv

(+)
PIANO SONATA NO. 4 from the years 1962–1964 is dedicated to the memory of Fiser’s friend, the pianist Antonín Jemelík, who died tragically. As a tribute to their friendship the composer incorporated into the introduction a quotation from their favourite work, Piano Sonata No. 10, Op. 70,by Alexander Scriabin. The tragedy of the death of the composer’s friend pervades the emotionally intense passage of unison octaves which follows the three-bar quotation. From a compositional point of view this work is a masterpiece of the mid-Sixties. Written as one movement, the piece is divided into numerous mutually contrasting segments which themselves are clearly grouped into two sections, exposition and development. The individual themes are introduced in the first section and thematically expanded in the second section. The motif treatment lies almost exclusively in the fragmenting or curtailing of the theme, or in the use of a combination of several themes, for the most part brief and eloquent. This compositional method, together with a clear-cut manner of execution, mainly semitonal melody and sharply contrastive dynamics, lends force and transparency to the piece. Piano Sonata No. 4 was completed in 1964 together with Symphonic Fresco, Concerto da camera for piano and orchestraand Fifteen Prints after Dürer’s Apocalypseand has earned its rightful place alongside them as masterpieces of Fiser’s œuvre. The work was first performed by Pavel Stepán in Prague’s Rudolfinum in 1965. The new setting for this piece is based on the single edition to date (Panton, 1969); only with regard to a few inconsistencies in the score was it necessary to consult the composer’s manuscript (kept at the National Museum – Czech Museum of Music, acquisition number 297/2006). (+)
Raymond Deane’s Seachanges (with Danse Macabre) is the first work in his Macabre Trilogy. Together with Catacombs (1994) and Marche Oubliée (1996) the three pieces deal lightheartedly with the theme of death. Seachanges has been selected as a set work for the school Leaving Certificate music examination in Ireland. The composer writes: ‘This piece is based on a short melody that came while walking on the beach at Ardtrasna County Sligo and that returned to haunt me a year later on a very different beach at Huatulco on the Pacific coast of Mexico. The piece is informed throughout by this extreme contrast and by my reactions to the grotesque andgaudy morbidity characteristic of Mexican iconography. The word 'seachanges' was suggested both by the Atlantic/Pacific aspect and by Shakespeare's Full fathom five my father lies… thus linking up with the theme of death. The use of marimba and strummed stringed instruments evokes the Mexican 'mariachi' band.’ Commissioned by Concorde with funds provided by The School of Irish Studies and The Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.

This musical fantasy depicts the history of the Dutch fortified town of Elburg. ...
(+)
This musical fantasy depicts the history of the Dutch fortified town of Elburg. The work begins with an atmospheric medieval picture of the Convent of St Agnes the nunnery that was built in the first half of the 15th century. We hear the sound of the convent bells together with an upward motif which will reappear later in the work. Next the rest of Elburg is featured including the fortress - from which the bells of the Sint-Nicolaaskerk (Saint Nicholas Church) are ringing. Then cheerful sounds can be heard at the Vischpoort (Fish Gate) where a dancing group is performing a 16th century French folk dance (a branle des chevaux). We also hear old wagons rumbling over the town’scobble stones. Trade made this Hanseatic town a lively place. The repetitive upward motif first heard in the introduction now develops into a more distinct feature reflecting the mercantile spirit of the town residents. Then follows the slow middle movement in which the clock has been turned back to the time when Elburg was still lying on the Zuiderzee (which was a bay of the North Sea) and was struggling with floods. After the second St. Marcellus Flood (1362) and the water flood of 1367 it was decided that the town would be relocated. We now hear the theme of branle des chevaux in a minor key followed by a death bell sounding in remembrance of the drowned citizens of the former town. Back in our own time a slow expressive theme in Baroque style mirrors Elburg’s tranquil places such as the Feithenhof (Feithen Court) and the Weduwenhofje (Widow Court). Then the bustle returns with motifs from the introduction followed by an attractive theme in which present-day Elburg is portrayed with its many tourists. Now suddenly there is an echo from the past depicting the dramatic floods and wars that once plagued the town. This leads to the grand closing theme: branle des chevaux is heard for a final time from the perspective of the historic town centre.

Henryk Mikolaj Górecki: Symphony No. 3 'Symphony of Sorrowful Songs' Op 36:
PWM (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne)
The unprecedented commercial success of the CD of Henryk Miko aj Góreckis Thi...
(+)
The unprecedented commercial success of the CD of Henryk Miko aj Góreckis Third Symphony in 1991 fifteen years after the date of its composition not only drew the Polish composer to the worlds attention arousing interest in his earlier works but also gave rise to a discussion about the state of culture in what might be described as a decadent period. So was the Third Symphony ahead of its time? Was it justifiable to regard the work as an end-of-the-seventies piece of aesthetical provocation? Should the wilful confusion of high and low aesthetic orders be considered a symbol of the end of post-Enlightenment utopia when the idea of progress in all fields including art constituted the fundamental criterion for evaluation? Attempts to answer these questions have given rise to a certain intellectual confusion leading occasionally to the advancing of false theses such as the attribution of Góreckis compositional output to the New Age spiritual landscape or the comparison of his compositional procedures with those of American minimalist composers. In fact the Third Symphony Symphony of Sorrowful Songs reflects both the composers individual exploration of technique and his attempt to determine his own Christian spiritual identity. The composition is a new manifestation of the sonoristic reductionism technique and the idea of simple music in line with Krzysztof Drobas designation of these phenomena according to which all details and modifications of tone colour are significant. By conferring on the three movements of the composition a form of mystery which negated a rational sense of time and made the work dissolve in a seemingly infinite continuum the composer managed to bring the Symphony within the sphere of folk ceremonial tradition. Anguish the principal theme of the composition presented here through both the mothers suffering after her sons death and the image of a woman prisoner in a Gestapo prison makes real sense only in the light of faith and the drama of Golgotha. Góreckis Third Symphony Symphony of Sorrowful Songs for soprano solo and orchestra dedicated to the composers wife was written in 1976. Commissioned by Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden it was premiered on 4 April 1977 during the 14th International Festival of Contemporary Art in Royan with Stefania Woytowicz as soloist. The same singer has made several recordings of the composition with different orchestras. The CD with Dawn Upshaw as soloist and the London Sinfonietta conducted by David Zinman won a Golden Disc award in 1991. The first movements outer sections (Lento sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile) consist of an austere ten-part canon on strings. Its Aeolian theme was derived from a Kurpian song notated in Rev. Father W adys aw Skierkowskis collection. The canon is characterized by continual repetition of the theme (and its counterpoint) all its answers being tonal and thus not going beyond the notes of the scale. In this way a vibrating sound magma

The Last Queen of Egypt. Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity?s best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remains a mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises the Roman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra?s femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love that Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third and last section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of the jealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar?s son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his own life. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History?s most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directed by Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary.

(+)
Written five years after the death of the composer the work reflects a powerful wish for an imaginary dialogue with a great creator; Upon learning the sad news coming from Paris in 1955 the plan of the work took shape quite soon but the work on the score itself materialized only in 1960 after a long period of gestation. Homage to Enescu has three parts – Prelude Melopoeia Polyphony – or three attitudes: one of awe striking the composer upon entering a vast world another of contemplation of its abyss and still another of lucidly returning to his work the only one capable of rendering him to his won artistic way. It was written forviolins alone (divided in four groups) whose numbers may be multiplied from 8 to 32. Instrumentally speaking Theodor Grigoriu intends an analysis of the rich color resources of the violin but also an investigation of Enescu’s unique original style of playing. The initial theme combines in the sense of an epiphany a monogram of the letters E.N.E.S.C.U. and two motifs from Octuor (Octet) and Chamber Symphony i.e. piece from youth and another from the end of his career both evoking a very characteristic Enescian Stimmung. E= mi / N = rest (in old neumes) / E = mi / S = si / C = do / U = do (ut) Ionel Perlea`s brilliant interpretation during his 1969 concert tour turned the audiences’ attention to this work propelling it into the concert life.

The Homenaje (Tribute) a Lope de Vega sets extracts from three of the sixteenth century writer’s many works all on the theme of romantic desire. The Vocal work is demanding and the Piano part more than mere accompaniment which keep these songs alive in the recital repertoire.Composer pianist writer and educator Joaquin Turina was born in Seville in 1882 and was active mainly in Spain until his death in 1949. His work is influenced by traditional Andalusian idioms and he was particularly generous in his attention to songs dwarfed only by his output of solo Piano music.

I Am the Lamb-A highly original text imagines the dramatic scenes that unfold as Jesus prepares for His Passion. Grasping His destiny as the Lamb of God Jesus sees His death in the elements of the Last Supper and in the reflections of the chalice. Musically profound the main theme is brooding and mysterious setting the scene. A mournful solo adorns the B section accompanied by choral lushness. A vision of the cross gives way to a touching epilogue of reflection as the piece fades into a peaceful conclusion. Profound!

(+)
Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands. For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve, a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier, but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs), and this set of three, as published, form a satisfying unit. The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme. Contrasting material follows, making use of a distinctive repeated note figure, then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin's A minor Prelude, with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence, but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy. / Piano 4 Mains

Instrumentation: piano Edition: score Publisher: Eberhard Mayer OEuvres pour piano/Klaviermusik/Piano Music Edition en 10 recueils/Edition in 10 Bänden/Edition in 10 volumes Volume 1: Femmes de Légende Editor: Eberhard Mayer Item no.: fue 4180 Difficulty: medium ISMN: 979-0-50012-918-9 Contents: Mélisande, Desdémona, Ophelie, Viviane, Phœbé, Omphale und Salomé The pieces for piano represent a great stylistic variety. One gets the impression that Mel Bonis may have intended to give a summary of musical development, not quoting historic styles but adapting the past through her personal tone and to translate it into contemporary musical language. The first volume includes an original series of musical portraits dedicated to legendary women, where Mel Bonis explores the enigmatic feminine universe. „Femmes de légende“ A collection we have called “Femmes de légende” contains seven piano pieces by Mel Bonis named after women whose fates have become legendary. They have not always been arranged in this way. The first piece, “Mélisande”, was published separately by Alphonse Leduc in 1898. In 1909, a collection called “Trois pièces pour piano” (Three pieces for the piano), dedicated to the composer Paul Locard and which included “Phœbé”, “Viviane” and “Salomé”, was published by Leduc. In 1913, “Mélisande” was added to the four last pieces for a final collection called “Cinq pièces”. “Omphale” appeared in a Berlin edition “Signale für die musikalische Welt” in 1910. As to “Ophélie”, it was never published in Mel Bonis’ lifetime and we discovered a manu-script in 1997 without any indication at all of when it was writ-ten. “Ophélie” was first published by the publishing house Ar-miane in Versailles in 1998. Mélisande (1898) Written before Debussy’s famous opera, Mel Bonis’ piano piece “Mélisande” was also inspired by the poet Maeterlinck (Mélisande, 1893). These short pages of magical harmonies, of radi-ant impressionist colours use music to describe Mélisande’s hair as described by Pelleas: “your hair and its beautiful light... It escapes everywhere, it shivers, it shakes, it trembles in my hand like a golden bird.” This piece enjoyed quite a success in Mel Bonis’ lifetime. She noted of it “my favourite” in the margin of her hand-written catalogue. Desdémona (1913) The female heroine in Shakespeare’s “Othello” inspired Mel Bonis to write a nostalgic piece with a fairly easy, rather classical beginning, a kind of romance without words, of great elegance and of a deep and melancholic beauty. Ophélie Ophelia, the lover of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, is a deeply melan-cholic character who goes mad and drowns in mysterious cir-cumstances. Ophelia inspired the poet Rimbaud and the painter Millais – each of them created a masterpiece. Mel Bonis too evokes images of water, sadness and death in music for a third work of art. With its delicate and chilling beauty and also with its moments of passion, this impressionist piece - the work which owes most to Debussy - calls for great intelligence when performed. Viviane (1909) The figure of the fairy of the lake is musically described here in a well-structured, many-facetted piece; first of all, the initial dancing theme has an air of the “salon” about it, typical of its time, evoking the fairy’s charm, her smile. Then follow succes-sions of majestic chords and fluent harmonies which represent the underwater castle and the fairy’s power. This piece is easily approachable. Phœbé (1909) The sister of Phoebus, the sun, symbolises the moon, the night, chastity. The piece creates an impression of night. Steeped in twilight, languor and a sense of immense space, the atmosphere is one of unreality. This feeling of alienation is reinforced by the incoherence of rhythm between the two hands. Salomé (1909) Inspired by the Orient, Mel Bonis creates a very original musical illustration of the biblical character of Salome. She is characterised by shifting moods in which slow syncopes follow light glissandos, and urgent, mysterious psalmodies accompany sensual melopeias, where surprising tempo varia-tions lead to outbreaks of violence. With its relatively difficult beginning, this piece is especially interesting from the viewpoint of research into interpretation. Omphale (1910) The queen of Lydia is a female character from the violent depths of Greek mythology. This powerful female is described here with glittering sensuality and Oriental subtlety. The impressive work shows a complex structure both in harmony and rhythm, it is a lively and rich work which calls for much thought and great virtuosity on the performer’s part. “Omphale” was awarded a prize for composition by the Berlin magazine “Signale für die musikalische Welt” in 1910.

‘You were often on my mind when I was writing’ wrote Robert Schumann to Joseph Joachim who had encouraged him to write this concerto. In view of Schumann’s illness however Joachim began to have his doubts about the value of the work. In his will Joachim prohibited the rst performance until the 100th anniversary of Schumann’s death in 1956. After detailed editorial work the premiere was brought forward to 1937.The theme of the middle movement probably formed the basis of Schumann’s Geistervariationen (‘Ghost Variations’) the character of the third movement is that of a grand polonaise. Yehudi Menuhin who performed the world premiere of the unedited version ofSchumann’s solo part saw in this piece ‘the bridge between Beethoven’s and Brahms’ concertos’.

Pristine in its approach this beautifully articulated anthem for Holy Week is worshipful and emotive. The minor theme rises and falls like a prayer representing in sound the sorrow of Jesus' death. Equal distribution of the choir creates a beautiful sonic experience for your singers and the simple beauty of the unadorned human voices will convey the power and pathos of this descriptive text.
