Some Reasons For Hesitating (1999) for Ensemble by Juliana Hodkinsons. Some reasons for hesitating was written for Nouvel Ensemble Moderne Montréal. First performance: Adelaide Festival of the Arts March 2000. Programme note: The piece is held together not by the grid of vertical time-coordination (a common metre common barlines) nor with the aid of a conductor but by a network of interdependent local cues such that the elements of each musician’s part – fragmented and incoherent as they are in isolation – serve by design as points of departure for the other musicians’parts. So the organising coherence of the whole is cut up into seemingly inert formless elements containing on their own little information or meaning but gaining sense once put together. The lack of a common framework to hold the sounds and silences results in a particular kind of waiting in which the silent musician is involved in the possibility that the end of that waiting may come a little unpredictably or unexpectedly. One benefit of this kind of communication between musicians is an increased intensity of pauses and waiting; one risk is the danger of missing a cue altogether. These phenomena are welcome as audible signs that (the) performance is a creative act relating hearing and action in a fragile process which requires constant adjustments and readjustments. Parts are available on hire: hire@ewh.dk

Par LIANG LEI. Having been interested in Mahayana Buddhism for a number of years, I went to a Buddhist monastery in upstate New York to study meditation in 1999. One evening, while walking alone by the side of the lake, I caught the sight of a “V” shape floating and extending on the surface of the water. It was a beaver taking a swim under the moon. This image gave me insight into my relationship with silence: underneath the music is a profoundly deep silence upon which I seek to inscribe my signature through sound. It serves as a point of departure that led to a series of works.

Each of its three sections addresses a kind of compositional technique ?transposition tutti (a 2-part homophonic section) and developing tutti (parts of the band enter to build to a 2-part homophonic tutti). Less experienced players might enjoy the challenges of easy syncopation and musical lines constructed with largerintervals.? ?Tom Duffy series editor.BandQuest® an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band is a program published by the American Composers Forum. Beethoven?s final three piano sonatas have always been a source of great fascination. Composed in 1820 the Sonata op. 109 opened the door to the future with its extreme expressivity its abandonment of traditional techniques and its radical departure from familiar aesthetic norms.Beethoven specialist Jonathan Del Mar has competently solved the questions raised by the highly complex source material of this work headed ?Sonata for the Hammerklavier? in the autograph score. The result is a reliable musical text and a Critical Commentary explaining alternative readings and editorial decisions. In addition to a reader-friendly engraving and practicalpage-turns the edition is rounded off with an informative Introduction and valuable notes on historical performance practice.

‘Rhapsody for Tienhoven’ is a short concert for saxophone and fanfare band. The solo part in its instrumentation distinguishes itself from the other saxophone solos. The soloist should be able to play both the alto and soprano saxophone. The piece consists of four parts which almost blend into one another.A four-tone motif (which is played a number of times by the soloist at the beginning) has been taken as the point of departure for this composition. This motif has been worked out in different ways and can be heard in a swing rhythm in the final part. This piece exacts a high standard of the soloist’s technical skills. The ‘Rhapsody forTienhoven’ was originally written for the fanfare band ‘Soli Deo Gloria’ from Tienhoven.

Programme note Tre Magdalene strofer / Three Magdalena Stanzas (1991/1994) for piano solo. Paraphrase over '3 Magdalena Songs' to texts (in Danish) by Hanne Groes: I. PRIVATION II. DEPARTURE III. MEETING Rosalind Bevan was really the originator of this piece since she urged me to write a piano version of my “Magdalena Songs” (to Hanne Groes texts in Danish) which she so often had accompanied. Moved by Rosalind's interest in the two contrasting songs (Kaldedrømme (´Calling Dreams) “Sent Møde (´LateMeeting) I wrote this little suite of Magdalena Stanzas for the piano. As the titles suggest the arche-typical 'longing for fulfilment'-motive (or ´longing´ and ´fullfilment´) is in focus. Less obvious is it that the two tunes supplement each other (as the famous 'Rubin vase-and-profiles'-complementarity manifest visually). But they do! Per Nørgård

Moj e Bukura Moré (My Beautiful Morea) has its origin in Southern Italy in Calabria where an Albanian community has lived for more than 500 years and so has the song! The tenderness of the melodic lines expresses the natural beauty of the distant homeland which according to legend can be seen from the Calabrian mountain-tops. As in most folk songs this tune is remarkably short; the melody itself has not been altered but has been extended enriched in texture and presented in different ways. The melodic lines serve as a point of departure for the proliferation of a distinct harmonic vocabulary. © TS

For Chamber Ensemble.Commissioned by the Hebrides Ensemble and first performed on their Scottish tour in March 2010.In Seven Pierrot Miniatures I took the Commedia dell’arte character Pierrot as my primary sourceof inspiration. Other more tenuous links to Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire also served as a starting point in forming the general shape of the work. The piece is cast in seven short movements whereas the Schoenberg comprises threesets of seven movements. Although there is no part for voice I have taken seven poems by Albert Giraud (none of them set in Pierrot Lunaire) as points of departure:1. The Clouds2. Decor3. Absinthe4.Suicide5. The Church6. Sunset7. The HarpEach movement takes its impetus from the corresponding poem but in the piece as a whole I wanted to explore the extreme contrasts of the multi-faceted character ofPierrot in a musical setting. There is an almost mirror-like quality to the form of the piece and a sense of ending where it has begun: movements 1 3 5 and 7 are closely linked both in terms of their musical material and asense of melancholy dream-like quality and longing. Movements 2 and 6 are also strongly connected with allusions to the more mischievous violent side of Pierrot. Movement 4 serves as a sort-of pivotal point within the work juxtaposing a surreal shimmering calm with brutal outbursts. There is never any direct repetition yet there is a strong sense of material returning and mutating as the workunfolds.InstrumentationFlute doubling piccoloClarinet in Bb doubling Bass Clarinet in BbViolin doubling ViolaCelloPiano

Soloing, Book 4 - Guitar Guitar [Sheet music + CD] - Intermediate Mel Bay
Description String Skipping & Wide Interval Soloing: 212 Melodic Studies and ...(+)
Description String Skipping & Wide Interval Soloing: 212 Melodic Studies and Patterns for Guitar is a much-needed guitarist’s guide to mastering wide interval soloing. This collection of repeating, continuous motion studies shows the guitarist how to develop melodic patterns that are characterized by large intervallic jumps in pitch, from one note to the next, in constant succession. This book presents four unique approaches to developing wide interval soloing, all of which utilize string skipping: 1) double pentatonic scales, which are three-note-per-string pentatonic scale patterns; 2) octave sliding, which uses sliding octave shapes in a variety of ways; 3) stacked fifths, which are wide interval shapes derived from pentatonic scales; and 4) wide interval arpeggios derived from the diatonic major scale. The sound that results from these techniques is exciting and unpredictable because it is such a departure from conventional melodic flow, which tends to be scalar, moving stepwise from one note in a scale to the next. By contrast, wide interval soloing is angular and skewed with big skips and sudden directional changes, creating a complex and fascinating sound. All of the studies in this book are designed as melodic etudes that can be applied directly to soloing in rock, jazz, fusion, and blues music. This book is ideal for serious guitarists in any style who want to break out of typical soloing patterns and create a more explosive, radical sound! CD included.

In preparing for publication the 1935 orchestral version of Britten's Te Deum in...(+)
In preparing for publication the 1935 orchestral version of Britten's Te Deum in C it became clear that there were a number of discrepancies between the manuscript and the original 193 vocal score. Some of these were minor:different articulation and dynamic markings something Britten was later very fussy about but perhaps left unchanged on proof because of his relative inexperience at this stage of his career with the processes of musicpublishing. Others were more important: wrong pedal notes for example which Britten failed to notice on proof and which have been perpetuated in performances and recordings for nearly seventy years. These have been corrected inthe new edition of the vocal score and in the orchestral score (Britten clearly used the published vocal score to prepare his orchestral version). The two versions have been made consistent in other details - rehearsal cues andbar numbers for example - since Britten intended choristers to use the vocal score to perform the orchestral version. This would have been an easy task for these is little discrepancy in essential details between versions (arare departure occurs in bars 53 to 56 where the works 'Lord God of Sabaoth' are unaccompanied in the orchestral version but doubled by Organ in the original). Sustained Organ chords are often filled out with arpeggiated stringwriting while the spacing of chords is frequently much wider in the string version with melodies transposed into different octaves. Although harmony in both versions is identical voice leading is sometimes altered in the latterto make it better suited to the idioms of the instruments concerned. So although in essence the two versions are the same the soundworld explored in each is quite distinct. Britten's orchestral version should neither beviewed as an occasional piece nor considered solely a liturgical work like many of his choral pieces from the 1930s and 1940s it is equally at home in church and concert hall.

Asbjørn Schaathun TRIPLIS+ (1996-98). For mezzo-soprano percussion electric organ alto flute coranglais clarinet violin viola cello double-bass and piano.Programme noteTriplis+ consists of seven songs based on computer-manipulated text fragments from Wilhelm Müller’s ’Die schöne Müllerin’. The seven songs should be played without interruption:I) Warum nicht?II)Nicht so...III)AngstIV) Wohin?V) HeimatVI) StilleVII)Ruhig. The score of TRIPLIS+ has a long history. The whole project began as a piece for piano and mezzo DUALIS (1987) to which I added percussion instruments to the vocal and piano parts which was deeply unsatisfying. (I also suggested certain ways of making different versions of the piece a so-called ’open score’ but this was even worse...) From the ruins of this piece I carved out a new DUALIS (1991) using the same material but with no percussion instruments added and in the form of a traditional ’frozen’ score. In 1993 I was asked to include a separate percussion part for a trio-version of my first undertakings of DUALIS. In close collaboration with the Cikada Trio I created a new version TRIPLIS (1993) which then in turn was taken as a point of departure for an extended version of the piece called TRIPLIS+ (1996-99). In this ’version integrale’ I - due to the requirements of the commission - added an ensemble of 8 instruments sometimes elaborating material from the mezzo-line sometimes contradicting or commenting upon it. The piano has a special role in both TRIPLIS+ and TRIPLIS; functioning as a kind of ’libro’ the piano textures which have the feel of an accompanying part are played ad lib throughout the work. In this way the pianist can change the actual dramatical flow of the piece. The first performance of TRIPLIS+ took place in the Bjergsted Music Centre in Stavanger Norway in April 1999 with

In a four-part composition Rieks van der Velde takes us to the richly varied area surrounding the university city of Cambridge. The Dutch composer was especially inspired by the atmosphere of Cambridgeshire the county which lies north of London. 1. The Journey. Although on arrival the area looks peaceful and friendly the ruggedness of its inhabitants and landscape have an unmistakable influence on the music. In the course of the tour which starts with an Allegro movement we are shown the vitality energy and freshness of the Cambridgeshire countryside. Short themes swift and sudden motifs and rhythmical patterns supported by the drive ofpercussion instruments give expression to this image. The first part is concluded by two 'Calmo' movements in which the music expresses how the cathedral in the city of Ely comes into sight and is gradually approached. 2. Visit to Ely Cathedral. The famous Norman cathedral church of Ely which was built in 1109 has attracted tourists from all over the world apart from being a place of worship and heritage site. A cornet solo introduces the contemplative mood of the composition at this point. The mystical atmosphere of the cathedral runs through this lyrical part like a continuous thread. 3. The Pub. The thirst caused by this intensive journey makes a visit to the local pub a definite must. These ?public houses? which may be open until the early hours of the morning offer all kinds of entertainment. Drinks are served liberally and the atmosphere is lively. 4. The Journey Back. Time has flown: In other words the moment of departure has come sooner than one would have wished. In a flashback which recaptures elements of the first part of the composition we say goodbye to Cambridgeshire in a fitting manner. Two scintillating final measures bring us abruptly back to the present.

He titled its three movements “Das Lebe wohl” (The Farewell) “Die Abwesenheit” (The Absence) and “Das Wiedersehn” (The Return) in reference to the hasty departure of his good friend and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria who fled Vienna with the imperial family on 4 May 1809 to escape Napoleon’s approaching troops. Beethoven referred to Op.81a as a “characteristic sonata” not in the sense that it had an underlying programme but because it lent musical expression to his feelings. He reacted angrily when hispublisher printed French translations of its title and movement headings. This however did not prevent Op.81a from becoming widely known by its French name “Les Adieux”. - Introduction by Misha Donat - Notes on performance practice by Jonathan Del Mar and Misha Donat - Scholarly-critical Urtext edition at the cutting edge of scholarship - Elegant engraving and optimal page turns - Informative Introduction (Eng/Ger) - Includes a Critical Commentary (Eng)

The Planets is cast as a single unit consisting of seven movements varying greatly in character each of which describes a planet or a celestial body. Mars makes a war-like contrast with aggressive rhythms and contrasting registers. This part is poly-rhythmic and very complex. Thus there is extensive use of the proportions 5:2 5:3 5:4 5:7 and 5:9 which are the point of departure of all the rhythm series.
