Many special experiences are joyful or thrilling, such as flying for the first time, a big sports moment, or the excitement of a first concert. Whatever it might be, Cooper Ford's Exhilaration is a musical expression of the emotions that come from these memorable moments. Young musicians should find this both easily accessible and fun to play, as melodies are passed around to different sections while reinforcing foundational rhythms, notes within a D major scale, and playing with a big sound. Written with the young orchestra in mind, 2nd violin and viola parts are doubled, as well as cello and string bass. (1:40) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.

Mention the key words Johann Sebastian and Magnificat, and one thinks involuntarily of his well-known Magnificat in D major BWV 243 or in E flat major BWV 243a. However, during the time of his tenure as St. Thomas Kantor, several times Bach also referred back to older settings of the Magnificat text and arranged these for his own purposes. Thus, for the first time it can be documented that in its original version the double choir Magnificat in C major BWV Anh. 30 contained in Bach's music library, which was originally handed down anonymously, was composed by Pietro Torri. Torri was the Music Director at the Court of the Bavarian House of Wittelsbach. For performance purposes in Leipzig in ca. 1742 Bach retained the substance of the work but composed additional parts for a 3rd trumpet and timpani. For the first time ever this splendid work appears at Carus in a printed edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3501200.

This accessible ballad, penned during Thad's later years in Denmark, is a rubato study in full-band expression. It opens with fortissimo brass, transitions to a quiet midsection showcasing saxes/woodwinds, then recaps the strong opening before going out very quietly with soprano (or alto) sax and trombones only in the final bars. No improvised solos are required. Duration 4:00.

This Salve Regina was originally intended to be accompanied by strings and wind instruments. However, the wind parts merely double the strings and the voices, adding color but not indispensable. In our edition the wind parts are omitted, so that the intimate choral texture is heard to far greater effect, the strings providing it with a sometimes virtuosic frame. Score and part available separately - see item CA.9101200.

Henry du Mont was a musician at the court of the French King Louis XIV. The present work was probably performed in 1663 in the presence of the king, who also ensured that it was printed in 1686. The piece is a Grant Motet, a motet for double-choir that, next to the mass, formed an important class of French church music at that time. Score available separately - see item CA.2100500.

Art Sheinberg has discovered a gem from the late English Baroque keyboard literature and expertly scored it to sound as if it were originally for strings. The violin ll and viola parts are often doubled, as are the cello and bass parts; there are essentially three parts throughout. This gives a full and balanced sound which accommodates uneven instrumentation. Violin l parts are in third position much of the time, and alternate fingerings given for the other parts will keep other advanced players busy. The piece is in D major throughout, with the exception of brief excursions into A and B minor. Full of rhythmic drive and sparkling counterpoint, the piece is a sure winner with students and an excellent vehicle to teach detached style and ensemble independence. Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. The contrasting and varied inner movements are perfect examples of Vivaldi's skill in vividly portraying linguistic figures in music. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4000700.

Ed. by James H. Laster (b. 1934). This bouyant baroque setting of a Psalm text imitates the sound of the trumpet with melismas in both choral parts.
