Classical composer Vicente Martin y Soler (1754-1806), sometimes called The Spanish Mozart, wrote a 1786 opera entitled Una Cosa Rara. While the opera has falled into obscurity, it was immensely popular at the time of its premiere. Six divertimenti by the composer, all based on themes from the opera, have helped preserve the legacy of this marvelous music. Carefully edited and restored from the original manuscripts by Dr. Patricia Cornett, these are important additions to the repertoire for advanced chamber ensembles. A Panorama of Songs fills a want that has been felt for decades. A selection of songs in six European languages from the 16th to the mid-20th century encompassing every musical period, it seeks to help beginner-level students of voice teachers and repetiteurs, and foremost the singers themselves. The series brings a breath of fresh air and new works to the conventional Lied repertoire, truly offering a new panorama. Using the means of modern technology it also provides immense help in learning and performing the songs. The three volumes of the series are arranged by level of difficulty, and all of them are available for high and low voices (a volumes for high voices, b volumes for low voices). Each volume is a complete unit in itself, including all six languages (English, French, German, Italian, Russian, and Spanish) and presenting a cross-section of styles from the early Baroque to the 20th century. Interpretation of the songs is facilitated by literal English and Hungarian translations of their texts, and the reading of the Cyrillic script is assisted by transliteration (again in English and Hungarian). Ornamentation suggestions for the performance of the Baroque works are also included. The printed music is accompanied by additional useful material to help the learning process, available online at www.emb.hu/downloads. The website contains the piano accompaniments of all of the songs, as well as all the original texts recited by native speakers.

It was with great pleasure that received a commission from my good friends at the Johnstown (Pennsylvania) Symphony Orchestra, Istvan Jaray, music director and conductor, to write a work for the opening of their 1996-1997 season. My intention was to write a lively work which highlighted the strengths of this musical organization while being accessible and appealing to their loyal audience members. In trying to tie something unique about Johnstown to the work, came up with the title, Iridium, which is a term that deals with the production of metal. During the writing of the work, my friend, colleague, and former teacher, Hugh Johnson passed away. Dr. Johnson, faculty emeritus at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, was a terrific musician who was always enthusiastic about orchestral music! It is this enthusiasm and energy that have tried to capture in this new work, which is dedicated to Dr. Johnson's memory. Finally, would like to thank Maestro Jaray and Tony Blackner for their interest in my work. Richard Strauss was aware (especially following the success of his Don Juan) of his reputation and above all of his value as a composer, which led him to rewrite several of his successful works by hand and leave them to his descendants as valuable Christmas gifts. In the case of the Eulenspiegel score, however, it was a genuine revision, which he marked with the instruction: [...] with the second fair copy October 1944 | once again revised and | to be regarded as a new print (especially in the complete edition of my works). | Dr. Richard Strauss. Hundreds of more precisely defined indications for articulation, dynamics and tempo, but especially an altered scoring at the end of the work (waiver of additional horns and trumpets) present the Till Eulenspiegel in this Urtext edition for the first time in the version bequeathed by Strauss as the final version. The dedicatee of the work changed as well. Whereas the first edition was dedicated to the dear friend Dr. Arthur Seidl, Strauss dedicated his revision to the good Till on his 50th birthday.
