Arrangement for Piano Four-hands by Maurice Ravel- Ravel had limitless admiration for Debussy’s famous orchestral work going so far as to say in an interview that it was his innermost wish to die to the sounds of this “uniquemarvel in the whole of music”. Since Debussy had himself already published a version for two pianos Ravel in 1910 undertook an arrangement for piano 4-hands. It was published that same year by Fromont in Paris andmade an impact all of its own. Henle have been able to recruit Debussy specialist Denis Herlin as editor of this Henle Urtext edition the first to evaluate all the available sources. The fingerings are by Andreas Groethuysen ofthe famous Tal & Groethuysen Duo.

for piano-This first print is a rarity: the highly virtuoso evocative 'Nocturne' owes its creation to an instrument that has only survived as a museum piece.Gustave Lyon the director of the French instrument maker Pleyel commissioned Charles Koechlin as well as several other French composers (such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel) to write works for the 'harpe chromatique' developed by him around 1900. In contrast to the common pedal harp the chromatic harp allows for an unlimited modulatory range. Nevertheless the instrument did not gain much acceptance and remained exotic.Koechlin was aware of the difficulty of introducing and establishing newinstruments. He therefore from the very beginning had the piano as an alternative of equal value in mind when writing his Nocturne.

This collection of sheet music by the great French composer Maurice Ravel featur...(+)
This collection of sheet music by the great French composer Maurice Ravel features 19 of his greatest pieces all newly-arranged especially for this volume. The subtle melodies and achingly beautiful harmonies of theselush Impressionist pieces truly do illustrate the sheer Joy Of Ravel. The pieces by Ravel included in this collection rank alongside Debussy as some of the prettiest Piano music evercomposed. Ravel himself categorically refused the term 'Impressionist' believing it to be reserved for paintings only but his?music so closely resembles the colourful flourishing and affective beauty of those worksof art that it is difficult to resist such a description. Featuring works like Boléro Jeux D'Eau Pavane Pour Une Infante Défunte as well as excerpts from La Valse The Joy Of Ravel?forsolo Piano sound utterly divine. Pieces like Menuet Antique Prélude and the selections from Le Tombeau De Couperin?perfectly encapsulate what makes Ravel's compositions soincredible. His perfectionist methods resulted in extended harmonies complexly musical modulations and masterful melodies that make these 19 works of art an unabashed joy to play and to hear. One of the great things about thissheet music book is the visual beauty of the music. With lilting notes and extensive ties this is not only a work full of aural pleasure but it's some of the nicest-looking notation out there. One of Ravel?s earliest works Jeux d?Eau was written for solo Piano in 1901. It is dedicated to Gabriel Fauré under whom Ravel was studying at the time. The title can be variously translated asFountains or Water Games. It was inspired by a piece by Lizst of the same name. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) is often considered after the death of Debussy in 1918 to be the leading Frenchcomposer of the 1920s and 30s. Earlier in his career he had caused consternation in the highly conservative pre-war French musical establishment with his unmistakable and highly original style.

Debussy?s early Piano piece Tarentelle Styrienne was published by Choudens in 1891. In 1903 the composer had it reissued under the new title Danse with a few small revisions byFromont with whom he worked a great deal at the time. He probably did not like the original title for this showpiece. Although Styriennes (Styrian dances) were fashionable in salon music one tends to think of dances such as theLändler rather than the tarantella of southern Italy. Following Debussy?s death in 1918 Maurice Ravel was asked to develop the Danse into a version for orchestra and it was first performed in 1923.

Piano: Instrumental Work 2 Pianos, 4 hands [Reduction] Barenreiter
for the Left Hand for Piano and Orchestra Piano reduction and solo part-In 1929...(+)
for the Left Hand for Piano and Orchestra Piano reduction and solo part-In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel’s most thrilling compositions and for Wittgenstein the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career. This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel’s Piano Concerto For The Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor Douglas Woodfull-Harris was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace the work’s evolutionfrom Ravel’s autograph working copy to the first printed edition.A source of key importance to our new edition is a handwritten French copy of Ravel’s own Piano reduction (the autograph is inaccessible) that he gave to Wittgenstein to facilitate rehearsing the work. This copy is the sole source reflecting Wittgenstein’s own interpretation and containing his changes to the final cadenza. It also helps us to understand omissions in the first edition of the score as well as the Piano reduction and enabled the editor amongst other things to correct a great many notes which could be found in previous editions including the solo Piano part. The Piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel’s and Wittgenstein’s fingering. Also included is a solo part without fingering thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein.Score and orchestral parts in large format (25.5 x 32.5 cm)Includes source descriptions and a Critical Commentary with alternative readings (Eng)Informative Introduction on the work’s history and genesis (Ger/Eng/Fr)With facsimile pagesPiano reduction with separate Urtext solo part enclosedFull score & parts (BA7881) and two-Piano reduction (BA7881-90) available for sale

Created in 1947 as part of the four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire this Sonate for Oboe and Piano is one of the early works of Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) a French Composer following the paths of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy with an idiosyncratic way of writing. Sonate was part of the compositions that were later disowned by the composer who considered them as being not mature enough compared to his main work even though they were played and enjoyed regularly all over the world. This duet integrates a variety of contrapuntal procedures which were highly appreciated by the composer. Composed of threemovements the first one begins with an austere canon while the latter two comprise more texture. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers among many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata two symphonies the Cello concerto Tout un monde lointain (A whole distant world) the Violin concerto L'arbre des songes (The tree of dreams) and the string quartet Ainsi la nuit (Thus the night).

The title of Ravel?s Miroirs (1904/05) can be interpreted as ?reflections? of the human world of experiences. Among the nature pictures in this cycle ?Une barque sur l?océan? is particularly popular forming a pianisticcomplement to Debussy?s orchestral work ?La mer? which was written at about the same time. The spacious arpeggios with fifths fourths and seconds hovering above them in subtle rhythms paint a maritime tableau that is in agenre all of its own: on the one hand we have a stylised picture of a boat at the mercy of the wind and the waves while on the other hand an allegory of the volatile nature of human life. This is the second separate edition of apiece from Ravel?s ?Miroirs? to be published by G. Henle Publishers after ?Alborado del gracioso? (HN 1295).
