The three so-called War Sonatas Nos. 6-8 were composed in the years 1939-1944, while Prokofiev was evacuated from Moscow to Kazakhstan and the Caucasus. The reference to the siege of Leningrad was a prerequisite for the success of the compositions, which continue the tradition of Beethoven rather than conforming to the stylistic maxims of 'socialist realism' in force at the time. The Sonata No. 8 is more introverted than its well-known predecessor Sonata No. 7 and impresses in the final movement with its diversity and echoes of French Impressionism. The work is suitable for advanced pianists.

Second SymphonyŸis in four movements. The first movement opens with a scream. The subsequent parts of the movement form a unified but complex whole, where traces from the coming movements turn up - constantly in interaction with the scream and its echoes. The second movement is slow and rather melodious. It was actually performed in a “trailer version†- shortened and minimized in December 2018 in the Danish TV programme 'Deadline'. The third movement is a scherzo - teeming, rhythmic, with almost physical soft and violent meetings, like acts of love between the different layers of music. The last movement is a farewell song - a goodbye. A musical ship is approaching only to disappear again. Where the composer perceives the preceding movements as highly contemporary, there is a touch of the past in this last movement - the composer's past. Sorensen quotes his fourth string quartet 'Schreie und Melancholie', and in this movement he was also influenced by the fact that his mother passed away during the composition of this piece.

Creating a realm in which reality and illusion play freely upon the mind of the listener, Silhouette employs contrasting elements of sonority, rhythm and pitch in an evelotionary flow of deep emotion. In the closing moments of this rhapsodic work, a few echoes are heard from the composer's germane keyboard work, East Lake Terrace.

1982 saw the publication of a melody for written for bagpipes by the name of Highland Cathedral—a name that draws its inspiration from a famous neo-Gothic church in Glasgow, Scotland. Since its first appearance, Highland Cathedral has enjoyed a triumphant tour around the globe, often acknowledged as an enthusiastic tribute to the nation of Scotland. Anthony Gröger’s version for string quartet combines this passionate character with unmistakeable echoes of the Scottish feel of the original work. Here then is this true classic, especially popular at wedding ceremonies, now arranged for string quartet.

Hakola composed the Kivi Songs in Paris in spring 2007. Distance and pining for home conjured forth from the poems timeless echoes of the primitive folk singer. It was as if the poems had the seeds of melodies hidden deep in ageless recesses. These seven songs exist also in orchestral versions. Texts in Finnish.

Although the musical archives of the world have yielded up their fair share of 'lost' or forgotten early works by the great composers, few might be regarded with more surprise and excitement than A Cambridge Mass by Ralph Vaughan Williams. It was completed in 1899 shortly before his 27th birthday and was successfully submitted for the Cambridge degree of Doctor of Music, but remained unperformed and unpublished till now. The work that has emerged from more than a century of obscurity is indeed a remarkable achievement, lasting 45 minutes and written for full orchestra, double chorus and SATB soloists. A setting of the Credo, Sanctus, Hosanna and Benedictus of the Mass, with an orchestral Offertorium as its second movement, this richly prescient musical outpouring shows the young composer's mastery of complex counterpoint no less than of bold melodic writing and striking orchestral gestures. By far the largest of VW's works predating A Sea Symphony of 1909, A Cambridge Mass already exhibits a command of large choral forces, inspired in part by the example of Verdi's Requiem, which the composer had recently encountered, and which influenced him profoundly. While there are also echoes of Bach, the Viennese classical masters and of Brahms and Dvorak, the current and pulse of the music, and the grand conception, are unmistakably those of Vaughan Williams himself. Orchestral material available for rental (Ref. HL399).

The call to spread the good news of the Gospel echoes through the centuries directly from the Savior. Jesus had a unique worldview because He was the first born over all creation; everything was created by Him and for Him. He chose the time and place of His appearing on Earth. He became the physical manifestation of God's love. His example and teaching changed the course of history - His sacrifice and Resurrection changed the course of eternity. The earthly ministry of the Master was coming to an end - the ministry of sharing His message was just beginning. However, He promised to be with us - even to the end of the age. This work is a celebration of the call to serve - a challenge to see the responsibility of missions in a new Light - and a charge to surround those that surrender their lives to the task of the Great Commission to go INTO ALL THE WORLD. Because of the saints that have come before - because of the sacrifice of those who continue to support missions around the world - because of those who still answer the call - and because of being blessed and empowered by the Holy Spirit, the name of Jesus is lifted across the globe - AND THE SUN NEVER SETS ON THE PRAISES OF THE LORD!

The introductory theme of this composition echoes the majestic size of the mountains that are visible from the picture-postcard Cortina d’Ampezzo—the so called Queen of the Dolomites. Then we hear a lyrical theme, in which we feel the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside. We can even hear the hustle and bustle of the popular ski resort, before the two opening themes return in reverse order to bring this musical sight-seeing excursion to a close. Johann Adolf Hasse, Kapellmeister at the Saxon-Polish court in Dresden, composed the Requiem in C major for the ceremonial exequies of the deceased Elector Friedrich August II in November 1763 in the Catholic Hofkirche in Dresden. With this work he composed a monument in music to his long-standing, generous employer, who was also King of Poland under the name August III: passionate choral movements, echoes of historic compositional styles, expressive vocal solos and arias which undeniably reveal Hasse the opera composer, and trumpets and timpani in the orchestra - all these are the ingredients of a royal Requiem Mass in the style of a Missa solemnis.Hasse's much smaller-scale Requiem in B flat, which we are now publishing for the first time, was presumably composed as early as the second half of the 1750s. Nothing is known about the occasion for which this beautiful work was composed, or even whether it was performed during the composer's lifetime. Perhaps the Seven Years War, in which the electorate of Saxony was involved, prevented any performance. Several borrowings from it in his Requiem in C and in the later Requiem in E flat show that Hasse held the work in high regard. The Hasse Works Edition (HWA) is published in collaboration with the Hasse-Gesellschaft Bergedorf e. V. and is intended to serve both scholarship and the needs of performing musicians with scholarly-critical editions of Hasse's music.

Quadri Morandi (2014) ties together two essential themes of Kai Niminen's (b. 1953) compositional style: guitar and a subject inspired by Italy. The strong presence of the guitar in his works is natural since he is in an actively performing guitarist himself, and guitar works indeed play a significant role in his oeuvre. Moreover, he has written plenty of orchestral music; for instance two symphonies, numerous concertos, and chamber music. In the field of Finnish music he is a composer who can be characterized as free from any specific school or style. In his musical language, free tonal in essence, one can detect traces of Impressionism, Neoromanticism and even Expressionism at times, but he is also willing to employ more recent 20th-century stylistic devices. Nieminen has mentioned that he finds himself very similar to Japanese Toru Takemitsu both musically and in thought. Mediterannean culture and Italy especially have been close to Nieminen's heart ever since he first visited the country and appeared in the jury of the international Fernando Sor guitar competition in 1981. He has composed a great number of works which refer to Italian landscapes or artists. The work Quadri Morandi (Morandi's pictures) is written in four movements. It has at its centre the painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), who is known as a master of still lifes and landscapes painted in a plain manner and is subdued colours. Their atmosphere typically reflects a calm spirit. This is the third guitar work that nieminen has written for Kleemola. It is easy to find a counterpart for the encaptivating realm of Morandi's art in Nieminen's clear and pure expression. The titles and expression markings also include several references to Morandi. For example, in the opening movement Prelude the words la Natura morta (still life) appear as an additional note on the chord sequence following the freely flowing opening section. At the end of the movement one can hear rhythmic motif coloured with flageolets that repeats the syllables of the painter's name: Gior-gio Moran-di. A similar motif can be heard at the end of the second movement Quasi cadenza. The tranquilly breathing third movement Paesaggio (landscape) creates an illusion of landscape by imitating the echo of monastery bells (come campane del monastero) and at the same time refers to il monaco (the monk), the name by which Morandi was often called. The final movement Ritratto (Portrait) is the most extensive of all the movements and can be seen, with its recurring motifs, as a reflection of the stable yet subtly varying elements of Morandi's art. The work ends with the rhythmic motif that once more echoes Morandi's name, like signature.
