This is a complete Evensong setting which ranges from unison and two part singing (Preces and Responses) to three part voices (Nunc Dimittis, which calls for a soloist.) The organ accompaniment is sometimes merely supportive and at other times solidly featured (in the Phos Hilaron, for one example). Despite the fact that this was written for children's choir, we think it is a useful package for anyone who wants Evensong material that will carry you through the entire service from start to finish.

From the composer: Evensong was composed at the request of my friend David Wick, principal hornist of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. He asked that I compose a recital piece for him to play with the orchestra's music director, JoAnn Falletta, who is also a virtuoso guitarist. The only stipulation he made was that the work include fragments of one of his favorite melodies, “Lasst mich alle”, from Four Songs, Op. 82, by Antonín Dvorák. The melody is also quoted in the Adagio movement of Dvorák’s Cello Concerto in B Minor, Op. 104, B. 191. The music is absolute in nature and cast in the form of a single movement fantasy based loosely on Dvorák’s melody, which is stated at the outset and at the conclusion.

Traditional in style, it nonetheless has a striking setting of the Lord's Prayer with interesting harmonies; a fine addition to the repertory for Evensong.

Randall Giles has looked to the chant as inspiration for this setting of the evening canticles. Both movements alternate single chant lines for a cantor with more developed harmony for men s choir. The choral parts retain the rhythmic flexibility of the chant with their ever-changing meter while exploiting the full range of each voice. The harmonic language ranges from stark simplicity to passages of more complex chromaticism particularly in the elegant organ accompaniment. The text is the Rite II translation. This is a superb addition to the Evensong repertory.

For two voices with occasional divisi, both movements have an elegant, radiant spirit about them. Organ part demands a colorful palette and supplies an additional expressive voice illuminating the text. A worthy addition to the repertoire for evensong.

This imaginative setting of the Evening Canticles features an expressive use of both close and wide intervals, particularly the 2nd and the 7th. This contributes to the distinctively neo-classical sound that Mr. James creates in this work. In its constantly changing harmonies and rhythms, the Magnificat has an implusive energy that drives it to theGloria. The Nunc Dimiitis features a lovely solo for baritone and a more inward setting of the text. This setting will provide a distinctive and fresh setting of these beloved words for the service of Evensong.
