Under 2004-2005 komponerade jag en cellokonsert for Mats Lidstrom. Samarbetet kring solostamman var intensivt i langa perioder vilket gav manga ideer och infallsvinklar samt god insikt i strakinstrumentens klangvarld och tekniska mojligheter. Det var darfor helt naturligt att med utgangspunkt fran de tva solokadenserna i cellokonserten aven komponera ett soloverk for Mats. Expose ar skrivet i en sats men har klart urskiljbara delar. Fran den langsamma inledningen arbetar sig stamman igenom alltmer dramatiska och animerade partier for att till slut explodera i den snabba slutdelen.

Welcome to the Cirque de L’étrange, known in English as the “Circus of the Strange.” This piece evokes a time of a bygone era, a time when circuses and carnivals provided people from all walks of life a chance to see human and animal oddities that were sources of both delight and horror. While many of these sideshow attractions were deemed fraudulent, it did not deter the crowds from flocking to be shocked and awed. I have always held a special place in my heart for the showmanship of carnivals, because my grandfather dearly loved them. For much of his life, he worked at fairs and carnivals selling cotton candy and candy apples. A large portion of my days when growing up were spent running around fairgrounds and helping my grandfather with his stand. He imparted in me a love for the cunning, magic, and sheer joy that only carnivals and circuses can bring. In Cirque de L’étrange, I sought to capture the the mirthful, yet uncanny mood of the carnivals that I grew up exploring, thus transporting you to a different time.Cirque de L'étrange is an original concert march written in standard march form, but its sound is anything but standard. This piece is playable by younger groups, as it is a great way to expose students to the march form and style while not sounding like your typical march.Opening in D minor, the piece combines the playful feel of a march and a macabre tango. The second time through the First Strain (mm. 5-23), the upper woodwinds and bells add a second counter melody based in D harmonic minor, which heightens the peculiar nature of the piece. The Second Strain (mm. 24-43) by contrast, is a little more upbeat, thus evoking the magical ebullience of a circus, which is further highlighted by the xylophone part. The Second Strain ends in the key of F major and sets up the transition to the Trio in the key of G minor. The Trio (m. 44) begins with the G harmonic minor melody in the clarinets and a counter melody in the bassoon and tenor saxophone. The rest of the woodwinds and bells join in at m. 60 while the percussion adds a Gypsy-like feel with tambourine and triangle. At m. 76 the full band joins in the macabre parade with the trombones and baritones harmonizing the counter melody. The conclusion of the march has the upper woodwinds, adding a second counter melody complete with trills to bring the march to an exciting and dramatic finish.As the World’s Greatest Showman, P.T. Barnum, a man my grandfather greatly admired, once said “The noblest art is that of making others happy.” It is my hope that through this piece you will experience the thrill, delight, and fright that only carnivals can bring as you visit the Circus of the Strange!

Il Signore Fagotto begint met een briljante orkestrale introductie. Dan introduceert de fagot het hoofdthema van het werk. De uitgebreide toepassing van een onregelmatige maatsoort (7/8) geeft de fagot de mogelijkheid om zijncharmante en schalkse kenmerken te onderstrepen. Dit spreekt tot onze verbeelding: we stellen ons voor hoe het beschreven karakter (Il Signore Fagotto) ondeugende streken levert. Kortom: een bijzonder boeiende compositie voor harmonieorkest,met als basis een prachtige hoofdrol voor de fagot!

Die Vielseitigkeit des Fagotts erkannten schon viele große Komponisten, wie z.B. Vivaldi oder Rimski-Korsakow. Es kann von melancholisch, klagend bis hin zu komisch und grotesk klingen. Letztere Eigenschaft war der Grund, warum in der commedia dell’arte im Italien der 1550er Jahre eine Figur namens Signor Fagotto, die das Fagott verkörperte, eine der wichtigsten komischen Rollen spielte. Maxime Aulio benannte nach ihm dieses Werk, in dem das Fagott seine schalkhafte, charmante Seite voll ausleben und auch das übrige Blasorchester brillieren kann.

Nicola Rimski-Korsakov disait du basson qu’il était « sénile et fourbe en Majeur, souffrant et triste en mineur ». Dans le grave et en staccato, il est indéniablement comique, grotesque et bouffon. Cette diversité de caractère avait déj inspiré la Commedia dell’arte qui confia Signor Fagotto l’un des rôles comiques essentiels. Au XVIIIe siècle, selon l’usage de l’opéra-comique italien (opera buffa), la voix était doublée par un instrument vent. De Signor Fagotto au basson, l’instrument qui allait le seconder, il n’y avait qu’un pas. C’est aussi cette époque que le basson devient un instrument soliste part entière. Vivaldi lui consacrera près de40 concertos. Sans doute a-t-il été conquis par sa personnalité généreuse, comme bien d’autres compositeurs dont Maxime Aulio. Il Signore Fagotto débute avec une introduction orchestrale brillante. Le soliste expose ensuite le thème premier de l’œuvre. L’utilisation presque constante d’un chiffrage de mesure irrégulier (7/8) permet au basson d’accentuer son caractère espiègle et charmant, tout en laissant l’auditeur un espace de liberté suffisant pour imaginer les facéties du personnage. Il Signore Fagotto est une œuvre captivante pour l’accompagnement orchestral et qui offre au basson une superbe partie soliste.Il Signore Fagotto a été donné en création mondiale le 24 avril 2002 par Laurent Le Chenadec (basson) accompagné de l’Orchestre d’Harmonie du Conservatoire National de Région de Toulouse.

Liberty is gecomponeerd in een traditionele marsvorm. Het eerste deel bevat naast een beweeglijk thema een aansprekende bassolo. Na de bassolo komt het eerste thema weer naar voren en wordt, na een krachtige afsluiting, hettrio ingeleid. Een lange, lyrische melodie in de tenorgroep laat vervolgens het publiek even achteroverleunen en genieten. Ze wordt echter bruusk onderbroken door een wilde fortissimopassage, gekenmerkt door een lange toonladderdie door het hele orkest heen loopt. Deze mondt uit in een welluidend Grandioso met een herhaling van de lyrische melodie, omspeeld in de discant, waarmee Liberty besluit.

Liberty ist ein kontrastreicher Konzertmarsch in traditioneller Form. Der erste Teil enthält neben einem lebhaften Thema ein anspruchsvolles Bassolo. Das ausgedehnte lyrische Trio enthält fast komplett neues thematisches Material und bildet so einen interessanten Gegensatz zum ersten Teil. Ein weiterer Kontrast entsteht durch eine abrupt einsetzende, wilde Fortissimo-Passage, die durch das ganze Blasorchester gereicht wird, bevor ein reizvolles Grandioso den Marsch beendet.

Liberty est une marche contrastante de forme traditionnelle. La première partie développe un thème pétillant qui se fond dans un solo de basse solidement charpenté. Le trio, plus lyrique, expose quelques nouvelles idées formant un contraste marqué avec le passage d’ouverture. La musique s’enflamme pour un énoncé en fortissimo qui chemine travers l’ensemble de l’orchestre puis cède sa place un thème Grandioso, dernier épisode de l’œuvre.

Calling for the band to be divided into four separate ensembles (and spread apart if space permits), Villages explores a wide range of harmonic and rhythmic interplay between each of these musical “villages.” The opening creates a dense canopy of sound, out of which the unique identity of each group variously emerges then melts back into the texture. As the fast pace continues, melodic fragments are bounced from group to group with interjections from the percussion. A slower lyric section provides contrast before the frantic pace returns leading to the exciting conclusion. Air and Variations is designed to expose students to the variation form through the use of contrasting styles, tempi and meters. The work opens with a statement of the theme presented by flute, clarinet and trumpet in legato, lyric style. Variation 1 is a toccata featuring marcato eighth notes, providing a rhythmic version of the theme. Variation 2 is a romance with the theme presented in a slow, expressive setting. Variation 3 is a gently lilting waltz with the theme appearing in flutes and trumpets. Variation 4 is a stately, triumphant processional-style march which provides the conclusion of the work.
