A sinister legend hangs over the Borgia family, a legend of corruption, abuse of power, orgies, sex and murder. These rumors proliferated especially during the papacy of Alexander VI, a descendant of the family, who was even called the Antichrist. On his death, contemporary witnesses reported that the devil himself prowled around the death chamber and a black dog run along the corridors of the Vatican as his emissary. One might say that this Borgia pope, who ruled together with his family with the greatest brutality, became demonized. Unscrupulousness, poison-toting, incest and other malice are to this day the hallmarks of this pontiff. 2. NEPOTISM Rodrigo Borgia was elected Pope on August 11, 1492. From the very start, the new pope was prepared to use any means to eliminate his opponents, either through the infamous “Borgia poison” or by excommunication and execution. His son Cesare, who wanted little to do with the church, was appointed cardinal against his will. Alessandro Farnese, broth of Giulia Farnese, the Pope's mistress, also became a cardinal. Numerous Spaniards were brought into the country and were appointed to ecclesiastical posts. This infuriated the opponents of Alexander VI. The Dominican Girolamo Savonarola from Florence demanded the removal of the Pope. He was tortured and banned. Giuliano della Rovere wanted to convene councils to depose the Pope, which Alexander managed to prevent through artful political maneuverings. Through great brutality, brillian political skill and power games, this pope was able to achieve his goal of leaving for his children a great legacy. Alexander VI constantly changed his allies and always acted unscrupulously to improve his financial situation and expand his sphere of influence. At the centre of the second movement of this work is the medieval hymn Dies Irae (Day of Wrath), which acts as a warning in the background condemning the Pope's actions.

In 1950, Pope Pius XII selected Marche Pontificale from the OrganSymphony No. 1, by French composer Charles Gounod, as the officialhymn of the Vatican. The first rendition of the official hymn took placein the same year, in Saint Peter?s Square in Rome, played by sevenmilitary bands. To celebrate the 80th birthday of Pope Benedict XVI in2007, Wil van der Beek has produced a first-class arrangement of thisfamous work for concert band.

Ter gelegenheid van het heilig jaar 1950 bepaalde de toenmalige paus Pius XII dat de Marche Pontificale van de Franse componist Charles Gounod (1818-1893) de officiële hymne van Vaticaanstad zou worden, als opvolger van eenhymne uit 1857 van Vittorino Hallmayr. De nieuwe naam van de mars werd ‘Paushymne’. De godvruchtige Gounod had het werk in 1869 geschreven voor een jubileum van paus Pius IX. In dat jaar vond de première plaats op het Sint-Pieterpleinin Rome, gespeeld door zeven militaire orkesten. Het was een enorm succes - en ook nu nog is deze muziek zeer geliefd. La Marche pontificale, comme l'avait appelée son auteur prit alors le nom d’Hymne pontifical remplaçant ainsi l’ancien hymne (Musica Festiva) composé par Vittorino Hallmayr en 1857.Animé d’une foi profonde, Charles Gounod avait composé cette marche en 1869 pour le jubilé sacerdotal du Pape Pie IX. La création eut lieu la même année, sur le parvis de la Basilique Saint-Pierre, par sept fanfares militaires. The times that brought this piece into being, 2020, has been a year like no other in our lifetimes.With the suffering of a once in a century pandemic raging in ever higher waves, and millions of people around the world confined to their homes with a shared attention span for the first time in generations, we watched in horror the 8 minute 46 second killing of George Floyd, a man previously unknown to us, but now unwillingly joining a long list of names of unarmed African Americans killed by police. The anguished backlash of citizens around the world, from Japan to New Zealand to Germany to the United States, of every age, color, and creed, has rallied for weeks and months on end to demand enough and that “Black Lives Matter.”And yet, in the midst of it all is an America starkly divided against itself with some defiantly pushing back, emboldened by authoritarian-style government actions against its own citizens occurring all over the country. It is against this backdrop that we ever had a chance to know of Elijah McClain. Here in quarantine I sometimes practice my scales in front of the news. And one day the mirror image looking back at me from the screen was a slight young man, warm, affable brown eyes, and also a violin under his chin. The newsreel-style camera pan so familiar now, I knew the only reason we were gazing upon his unfamous face was that he too had been killed by police nearly a year before. But the revelation of it in the broadcast hit me particularly hard.Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, who is not only one of the great composers of our time, is also a dear friend, and called me the next day, also deeply saddened by the news. It was from Ellen that I learned that Elijah used to play for the kittens at the local animal shelter so they wouldn’t be lonely. This kind, gentle soul was aggressively taken into police custody while saying, “I am an introvert. Please respect the boundaries that I am speaking... I’m going home.” He was never seen alive again.Ellen and I spoke of the sadness and the injustice of this several times. She felt a powerful calling to contribute something in a statement and the result is the piece you now hold in your hands. I am deeply honored to be the dedicatee of the piece, to have worked together with Ellen on some of the final details, and to pen this score note. As an invited alumna of the Eastman School of Music, I premiered the work for their virtual event on Diversity and Inclusion. Each time I play it, there is a persistent lump in my throat because Ellen has captured something poignant and powerful here.There are great works which give voice to important moments for generations, and this is one of them. Bach originally composed the Cello Suites, some of the most frequently performed and recognised solo compositions ever written for the instrument, during the period 1717-1723, when he served as Kapellmeister in Kothen. King's adaptions for Trumpet (1990) include phrase marks, dynamic markings, articulation and performance directions.
