The music of War, Women and Witchcraft is a web with strands of magic, a romantic impression of the Scottish landscape and the sounds of battle using fanfare-like figures and drum effects, and a lovely melody near the end when everyone lives happily ever after.

The titles comes from a book by the Scottish poet, author and composer James Hogg, known as The Ettrick Shepherd. It is the subtitle to his wonderful book The Three Perils of Man. I was commissioned to write a wind band work of this title for the Borders Festival in 1991. The book weaves fact and fantasy togethers around the Scottish Borders in the thirteenth century. I have used a note row based on some of Hogg's melodies and also created my own mixture representing Master Michael Scott, the Black Magician, and his wild adventures, the battle for the castle at Roxburgh and the prize of the Princess' hand to the winner of the battle. Welcome to Ireland, the country where the traditional music is as varied as the landscape! Marc Jeanbourquinâ??s Irish Fantasy starts in a carefree and lively fashion from County Galway, then strolls through the moorlands of Kerry in a slower, lyrical movement with room for a solo, and comes to rest in Cork, with high-spirited and up-tempo folk tunes, and an accompaniment reminiscent of the bagpipes.

Ierland heeft - naast een veelvoud aan prachtige landschappen - een rijke muzikale traditie. In dit werk verwerkte de componist beide elementen en steekt van wal met een indruk van het opgewekte County Galway om dan door de venen van Kerry te wandelen, begeleid door een langzame optionele solo voor trombone en trompet. In Cork mag de doedelzak natuurlijk niet ontbreken en breekt een heus dansfeest los met de typische Ierse folkmuziek!

Wind parts use only five pitches and only the percussion parts use eighth notes. Two sound effects are required in the piece. First, the hatching eggs are portrayed by a ratchet, and second, the snapping dinosaurs jaws are represented by  a slapstick. Ballet of the Dinosaur Hatchlings is a descriptive novelty selection for a beginning band with less than one year of instruction. Wind parts use only five pitches. Dies kann ein Blech- und/oder Holzbläserquartett sein, möglich ist auch ein Posaunenchor (der Komponist gibt hierzu Tipps). In Kirchen kommt die Fantasie besonders schön zur Geltung, wenn das Quartett von der Empore herab spielt. Der so kreierte Doppelchor-Effekt passt ausgezeichnet zum Renaissance ähnlichen Stil und verspricht eine sehr lebhafte und abwechslungsreiche Aufführung.

Fantasia di Pasqua est une fantaisie basée sur des mélodies chorales pascales, issues de la Renaissance. Un quatuor (cuivres/bois) joue un rôle primordial dans le développement de la pièce. La musique pascale étant essentiellement destinée être interprétée dans un lieu de culte, le compositeur préconise de placer le quatuor sur le balcon. Lâ??effet de double ch?ur ainsi créé donne la pièce un caractère varié et divertissant.

Fantasia di Pasqua, basata su melodie tradizionali, utilizza un quartetto, che riveste un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo del brano. Sono possibili varie combinazioni, come ad esempio un quartetto di ottoni e/o legni, come anche un coro di tromboni). Fantasia di Pasqua è scritta in uno stile simile alla musica rinascimentale, una scelta che si spiega con il fatto che la maggior parte delle melodie corali datano di questo periodo. Queste melodie danzanti, interpretate dal quartetto, segnano la trama del brano. La bellezza del doppio coro conferisce al brano un carattere variegato e divertente.

This fantasy tells the story of Oregon, one of Americas north-western states. Traveling by train on the Northern Pacific Railroad, the listener is taken through the fascinating Oregon landscape. Indians, cowboys, golddiggers and hooded wagons willfile past on this adventurous journey. The piece has some similarities with a soundtrack of a movie. Various melodies, which could be the main themes of a movie, pass the review.The piece begins in a slow movement, introducing the first theme inminor. Then we hear in the following fast movement the trombones imitate the train, whistling the steam-flute. We hear the characteristic minor theme again, but now in different variants(also in major). The rythmic structure of western stile androck succeed each other. This is leading to the slow movement, where the signals of horns and trumpets introduce a wonderful vocal melody. After this characteristic melody, the fast movement appears shortly again, the trombones whistling thesteam-flute again (now in major). We hear also some musical elements, that plays a part in the following Presto. Barchanges, jazzy chords, interesting rhytmic patterns (with bongo) and an original theme are the characteristics of this Presto. Afterthis, the horns announce the last section of the piece. Interesting is the fact that we hear in this Allegro section a variant of the vocal melody in the slow movement. Also the Presto theme returns shortly, followed by the Allargando, which is agrand characteristic end of a soundtrack. The movie of our travelling fantasy has come to an end.

Deze fantasie vertelt het verhaal van Oregon, een van de noordwestelijke staten van Amerika. Een treinreis over de Northern Pacific Railroad voert de luisteraar mee door het boeiende landschap van Oregon. Tijdens deze avontuurlijke reis isdromen over een ver verleden onvermijdelijk. Indianen, cowboys, goudzoekers en huifkarren met paarden ervoor passeren hierbij de revue. Het werk heeft overeenkomsten met de soundtrack van een film.

In Oregon entführt Sie Jacob de Haan auf eine abenteuerliche Zugfahrt durch die faszinierende Landschaft einer der nordwestlichen Staaten Amerikas. Ein langsames Thema in Moll, gepaart mit Variationen in Western- und Rockrhythmen undmelodiösen Passagen sind nur einige der Elemente, die diese Reise so spannend und abwechslungsreich gestalten.
