Owain Park's Above The Stars My Saviour Dwells for SATB composed in 2017. Du...(+)
Owain Park's Above The Stars My Saviour Dwells for SATB composed in 2017. Duration: 3 minutes. 'Owain Park was assistant conductor of the RSCM Millennium Youth Choir from 2012 to 2014 and went on to form the Gesualdo Six with singers from the MYC at that time. He is now also finding increasing success as a composer as evidenced by these recent commissions. A Prayer of Thomas Ken sets a lovely text that asks God to ‘make the door of this house wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship and a heavenly Father’s love’ but ‘narrow enough to shut out allenvy pride and hate … Make it a gateway to thine eternal kingdom.’ Commissioned by Wells Cathedral Voluntary Choir the music has a warm E major melody with a flexible metre that returns for the final Amen. In between the details of ‘envy pride and hate’ ‘stumbling block’ straying feet’ and ‘the tempter’s power’ are all nicely depicted. The other two pieces were both written for the choir of Trinity College Cambridge and are more difficult especially Above the stars my saviour dwells. But the music of both has a gentle melodiousness and well-shaped vocal lines that make them rewarding to sing. The simple melody that permeates Justorum animae passed from voice to voice has poise and memorability.' - Sunday by Sunday

Hans Abrahamsen's Flowersongs (1973) for three Flutes. Score. 'I wrote Flowersongs for three Flutes in the spring of 1973 when I was 20 years old. Looking back now 40 years begins to feel like a really long time and sometimes I think that it is as if someone in 1973 is talking about a piece from 1933! But in spite of this long time this is still a very important piece for me. In Flowersongs along with works like '10 Preludes' for String Quartet and 'Stratifications' for Orchestra I feel that I was on my way to finding my own voice in the middle of the music of the great Central Europeanmodernist tradition from the 50s and the reaction from the 60s of the new simplicity minimalism and the possibility of poly-stilisme. The English title Flowersongs links to the flower power movement and the hippie culture of the 60s and the early 70s and the work is trying to find the power inherent in this imaginary world. Many of my later works have titles in German for example 'Winternacht' (1976/78) 'Nacht und Trumpeten' (1981) and much later 'Schnee' (2006-08). If we think of Flowersongs in German it must be Blumenlieder and to me it now sounds suddenly very different more romantic and into the world of Schumann. Perhaps it is also a way in which to hear the piece? Another thing is that the correct English title is Flower Songs (as two words) and not as one word like in German or Danish. This is perhaps the German connection as I incorrectly wrote the title as one word; but perhaps it is also a kind of naivety which is also part of the work. I cannot help but carry with me to this day the ideas from my early works. For example there are clear links in this work from the 8th Prelude from '10 Preludes' and to Canon 2a from 'Schnee' from 2008. This work is written for the wonderful ensemble recherche and it was meeting them that made me consider making a version of

Standards for Tenor Sax-Glenn Zottola is best known as a brilliant swinging trumpeter who occasionally doubles on alto sax. On this special project he is heard as a talented tenor saxophonist who draws on the sounds and styles of Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins finding his own voice somewhere in between. Glenn sounds quite at home playing with the vintage rhythm sections yet gives the music his own special twist. We've transposed Glenn's every note enabling the at-home player to study and emulate these improvised solos. The sheet music also contains the original melody line of these classic standards plus chords and an alto sax part so that both Bb and Eb saxes can play these great standardswith equal enjoyment with an all-star rhythm section. Includes: Body and Soul · Embraceable You · Oh Lady Be Good · You Go to My Head · and more.

Body And Soul for Clarinet Bass Clarinet Percussion Violin and Cello (2011). Parts available WH31294A Programme Note Posed some questions I can say: Each of us have our own reasons for finding a work successful - and each work has its own reasons for being successful very different reasons and reasons of a different kind. Speaking for myself I have opposing and often conflicting views and wishes. Automatically (!) I am attracted by music of a strict and severe nature but also by the unforseen the provocative and the devil-may-dare. And a burst of laughter to and fro shallbe welcomed - as a relief. Since the 1960's I have tried to condense the musical material as much as possible to make it as simple as possible. Complexity arises when the simple 'things' meet. 'Things' indicate that the motives of the music often can be experienced as objects. As the late Poul Nielsen put it speaking of my piece REPRISER from 1965: 'there is sound as sound - and sound as expression' . and there is 'a voice that speaks and a voice that is silent' The present new piece of mine Body and Soul is thus entitled because the brief first movement has a direct physical approach while the second movement has a more intimate spiritual and softer touch. Don Juan the Master of The Senses can be supposed to have embodied both sides in his nature. And what is Don Juan doing here? - the second movement gives the answer - by and by. Par HARVEY JONATHAN. Wagner Dream by Jonathan Harvey is an opera in nine scenes for soloists, actors, chorus, large ensemble and electronics. This vocal score for an accompanied mixed voices chorus, and contains a piano reduction for soloists.
'At the heart of this opera is the clash of two cultures. Late, highly charged romanticism with its
paradigm of finding knowledge through emotional intensity fused with deep psychology and mythic
regression, on the one hand. And on the other hand the new and old world of Buddhism and oriental
thought with its detachment, its clear analysis of happiness and suffering in terms of mind. Perhaps
this latter is the future, and the Wagner world is what we are coming from.'

Piano
