Chamber Music Saxophone Quartet SKU: PR.14440426S Five Bagatelles for Saxophone Quartet. Composed by Sydney F. Hodkinson. Full score. With Standard notation. 33 pages. Duration 12 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #144-40426S. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.14440426S). UPC: 680160030484. In 1999, while packing up myriad boxes to move to a new home (following academic retirement from Eastman School of Music), I stumbled-literally-over a short string suite of five vignettes I had composed during the 1950's as a college freshman. They had never been performed. I decided to transcribe them for the American Saxophone Quartet following a request from that august ensemble. Other than slightly lengthening the first ditty to accommodate an imperious alto sax which thinks it can play ALL of the 4-part fugal entries itself, I made few changes from the original youthful version. The first four movements each feature one of the quartet members as a leading voice, the others largely accompanying; everyone shares the wealth in the final dance. The whole piece is very tonal (with centers on A, D, E, G and D respectively) and make copious use of a jazz/pop music ambience that was prevalent in my first-year-conservatory world at the time. The five Snippets are approximately twelve minutes in duration and are affectionately dedicated to my long-standing friend, the saxophone virtuoso Albert Regni. The work was complete in 1954 in Rochester, New York and transcribed in Ormond, Florida, during the summer of 2000. The American Saxophone Quartet, founded by Mr. Regni, gave the premiere performances in New York City. --Sydney Hodkinson. $31.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Chamber Music Mezzo-soprano voice, Piano, baritone voice, soprano voice, tenor v...(+)
Chamber Music Mezzo-soprano voice, Piano, baritone voice, soprano voice, tenor voice SKU: PR.411411930 Composed by Nkeiru Okoye. Vocal Score. 60 pages. Duration 25 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #411-41193. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.411411930). UPC: 680160687589. This rebooted triptych of short operas is family friendly and full of fun, while paying tribute to the African tradition of storytelling for all ages. Sister Sparrow, Sister Robin and Madame Partridge retell the antics of Bre'r Rabbit and his nemesis Bre'r Fox in Briar Patch, The Pot of Sense, and Madame Partridge and her Eggs. Okoye's music blends African American musical styles of jazz, blues, and gospel with contemporary concert music sounds. Combined with Moore's libretto, the result brings to mind a meeting Langston Hughes and Gilbert and Sullivan on steroids, en route to the Black church. A concert version of Briar Patch will be available for full orchestra with five soloists. Libretto by Carman Moore. The music blends African American musical styles of jazz, blues, and gospel with contemporary concert music sounds. Intended for all audiences. NOTE: Each story from the Tales from the Briar Patch is derived from African folk tales. The character Bre'r Rabbit is actually the trickster, Anansi the Spider, of ancient Ghanaian folklore. While many people associate him and his friends with Joel Chandler Harris' Uncle Remus stories, the stories predate Harris and hist stories. The creators updated the language, using all animals to portray the story, with the trio of spirited birds narrating. Producers find that the works rate well with all audiences and are especially useful for community discussions and engagement. Chamber Music Solo Cello SKU: PR.144404960 For Solo Violoncello. Composed by Sydney F. Hodkinson. Contemporary. Performance Score. With Standard notation. Composed December 15 2003. 7 pages. Duration 5:30. Theodore Presser Company #144-40496. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.144404960). UPC: 680160545476. Although my wife Elizabeth took me on a two-week Caribbean cruise as a pre-70th birthday vacation gift, two short works for string instruments emerged during the trip: Trance for solo violoncello and Sojournen for solo viola. This cello piece invokes two of the many meanings of spell: an incantation and also a short period of time. The solo is a trance-like, fleeting scherzo in a three-part through-composed design. The entire piece is constructed from very limited material stated in the opening gestures with much use made of open strings. Following an introduction, the three brief sections serve as mini-etudes for glissandi tremolandos, measured tremolos, and double-stopped rapid bowing. I think an omnipresent autumnal aural breeze was in my mind since the soloist's oration -- indeed under a spell -- never lets up, even at very low dynamic levels. This constant motion requires dexterity, finesse and an elegant control from the performer. Trance is approximately five minutes in duration, was written while at sea and completed on December 15, 2003, in Saint Johns, Antigua. The score is dedicated to the American cellist Jeffrey Zeigler. $16.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Clarinet SKU: HL.50600566 Clarinet Solo. Composed by Osmo Tapio Räihälä. Woodwind Solo. Classical. Softcover. 10 pages. Sikorski #SIK8811. Published by Sikorski (HL.50600566). 8.25x11.75x0.07 inches. The Finnish composer Osmo Tapio Räihälä reports that he experienced a phase whilst working on his Horn Concerto in 2011 during which he had the feeling of “having landed in a deadendâ€. To find a remedy, he decided to develop a kind of “finger exercise†for composers, comparable to the “warming-up process of an instrumental soloist before performingâ€. Räihälä remembers furthermore: “Instead of writing for orchestra, I started a short solo piece for clarinet. Little did I know that I had opened a Pandora's box! I wrote 'Soliloque 1: Étoffé' in two days. Perhaps this frenzy caused the music to become restless, with quick turns – in short, a rather virtuosic etude. The clarinet seeks paths, at first without success, but obviously finding one in the end. And what about the Pandora's Box? I had given the title the number one, and during the next two years I wrote five more Soliloques, solos of six to seven minutes, for various instruments, as well as one for soprano a cappella. The title Étoffé means 'rich', or 'well rounded', but also 'fabric' or even a 'patch' - and I felt that I had patched something in my work that was broken; indeed, working on the concerto now gave me a fresh start.â€. $14.99 - See more - Buy online

The story of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor is of a rising star composer, one with a significant gift for melody and a simple lyricism, who embraced the previously unexplored song and dance forms from his father’s native west Africa and incorporated them into his own very European art music. Coleridge-Taylor began playing the violin at age five and by age fifteen wasadmitted to London’s Royal College of Music, where he studied both violin and composition and composed his first works. The simply titled Melody is taken from Three Short Pieces for Organ, a set of pieces originally published in Novello’s Album for the Organ, No. 3 (1898). Choral SATB choir, piano SKU: PR.362034230 A Prologue to THE CREATION by Franz Joseph Haydn. Composed by Dan Welcher. Sws. Premiered at the Northwest Hills United Methodist Church, Austin, TX. Choral. Performance Score. With Standard notation. Composed July 5 2014. 16 pages. Duration 5:15. Theodore Presser Company #362-03423. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.362034230). ISBN 9781598069556. UPC: 680160624225. Letter inches. English. When the Texas Choral Consort asked Welcher to write a short prologue to Haydn's The Creation, his first reaction was that Haydn already presents Chaos in his introductory movement. As he thought about it, Welcher began envisioning a truer void to precede Haydn's depiction of Chaos within the scope of 18th-century classical style - quoting some of Haydn's themes and showing human voices and inhuman sounds in a kind of pre-creation melange of color, mood, and atmosphere. Welcher accepted this challenge with the proviso that his prologue would lead directly into Haydn's masterpiece without stopping, and certainly without applause in between. Scored for mixed chorus and Haydn's instrumentation, Without Form and Void is a dramatically fresh yet pragmatic enhancement to deepen any performance of Haydn's The Creation. Orchestral score and parts are available on rental. When Brent Baldwin asked me to consider writing a short prologue to THE CREATION, my first response was “Why?â€Â THE CREATION already contains a prologue; it’s called “Representation of Chaosâ€, and it’s Haydn’s way of showing the formless universe. How could a new piece do anything but get in the way? But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. The Age of Enlightenment’s idea of “Chaos†was just extended chromaticism, no more than Bach used (in fact, Bach went further).Perhaps there might be a way to use the full resources of the modern orchestra (or at least, a Haydn-sized orchestra) and the modern chorus to really present a cosmic soup of unborn musical atoms, just waiting for Haydn’s sure touch to animate them. Perhaps it could even quote some of Haydn’s themes before he knew them himself, and also show human voices and inhuman sounds in a kind of pre-creation mélange of color, mood, and atmosphere. So I accepted the challenge, with the proviso that my new piece not be treated as some kind of “overtureâ€, but would instead be allowed to lead directly into Haydn’s masterpiece without stopping, and certainly without applause. I crafted this five minute piece to begin with a kind of “music of the spheres†universe-hum, created by tuned wine glasses and violin harmonics. The chorus enters very soon after, with the opening words of Genesis whispered simultaneously in as many languages as can be found in a chorus. The first two minutes of my work are all about unborn human voices and unfocused planetary sounds, gradually becoming more and more “coherent†until we finally hear actual pitches, melodies, and words. Three of Haydn’s melodies will be heard, to be specific, but not in the way he will present them an hour from now. It’s almost as if we are listening inside the womb of the universe, looking for a faint heartbeat of worlds, animals, and people to come. At the end of the piece, the chorus finally finds its voice with a single word: “God!â€, and the orchestra finally finds its own pulse as well. The unstoppable desire for birth must now be answered, and it is----by Haydn’s marvelous oratorio. I am not a religious man in any traditional sense. Neither was Haydn, nor Mozart, nor Beethoven. But all of them, as well as I, share in what is now called a humanistic view of how things came to be, how life in its many forms developed on this planet, and how Man became the recorder of history. The gospel according to John begins with a parody of Genesis: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.â€Â  I love that phrase, and it’s in that spirit that I offer my humble “opener†to the finest work of one of the greatest composers Western music has ever known. My piece is not supposed to sound like Haydn. It’s supposed to sound like a giant palette, on which a composer in 1798 might find more outrageous colors than his era would permit…but which, I hope, he would have been delighted to hear. $3.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Chamber Music Trombone, Piano SKU: PR.144407320 Composed by Lauren Bernofsky. Set of Score and Parts. 16+8 pages. Duration 10 minutes. Merion Music #144-40732. Published by Merion Music (PR.144407320). ISBN 9781491135006. UPC: 680160685998. From the pen of Lauren Bernofsky comes a truly unique contribution to the trombone repertoire – music expressing the joys and challenges of parenthood, through a mother’s eyes. FROM A MOTHER’S JOURNAL is a suite of five movements, Love Letter, A World of Worry, Bedtime Battle, Contentment, and Little Imp, which bubble with warmth, irony, frustration, tenderness, humor … as complex a cocktail of emotions as parenthood itself. The music explores a broad range of trombone techniques, making the 10-minute suite an exciting tour de force for any recital. The idea for FROM A MOTHER’S JOURNAL originated during car ride from an IWBC conference back to New York City – Nikki Abissi and I were sharing our experiences of the challenges and joys of motherhood, and she said, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have a trombone piece written about all the emotions of motherhood?†There certainly wasn’t one that I knew about! Not long after, she contacted me about writing her exactly that piece.I thought that this was definitely a concept for a piece whose time had come, and I was immediately on board with the project. She sent me some short descriptions of some of her experiences, from the frustration of getting a rambunctious baby to go to sleep at bedtime to the boundless love she felt for not just her baby but her husband, as a father, as well. I wrote each anecdote into a short movement, and the result was a collection of musical vignettes covering a range of moods and textures as well as trombone techniques. Since I, too, am a mother, I filtered her anecdotes through my own lens, and I consider this piece to be not just a biography of Nikki but also my own autobiography. $18.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

This text of this piece use four languages - English, Hebrew, Italian, and French - to express joy and give thanks. Except for the word 'joy' which is presented simultaneously in all four languages at the outset of the work, the rest of the composition was composed initially without words. In 1981, WFMT Radio in Chicago commissioned twelve composers to write short fanfares in celebration of the station’s thirtieth anniversary. For one month at a time, each composer’s Fanfare was heard every day at a previously unannounced time slot. Because of my special fondness for the human voice as an instrument, I decided to make my Fanfare a vocal one. “My†month in this series being the month of November, the idea of giving thanks naturally suggested itself. Though the work can be performed live by a minimum of five female voices, I really wanted to limit timbre differentiation to a minimum — hence the idea of pre-recording two singers and multi-tracking them. And, in any event, it seemed especially appropriate to compose a work of this nature for the radio, a medium that is certainly quite distinct from the concert-hall. For a text, I put together a series of words in English, Hebrew, Italian and French, all concerned with joy and giving thanks. Except for the word joy which is presented simultaneously in all four languages at the outset of the work, the rest of the composition was composed initially without words. In a process akin, perhaps, to the orchestrating of music already composed, the words were then strung together by me to fit the sounds and the rhythms (a reversal, at least for me, of the usual process of combining text and music). $120.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

String Quartet SKU: PR.16400222S Composed by Dan Welcher. Full score (study). With Standard notation. Duration 11 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #164-00222S. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.16400222S). UPC: 680160037841. This work follows my Quartet No. 1 by five years. In terms of style and aesthetic aim, however, it seems light years away. Where the first work, a 28-minute, four-movement piece, took aim at cosmic conflicts and heroic resolutions, the present work is intended as a kind of divertissment. Harbor Music lasts a mere eleven minutes, is cast in a single movement with six sections, and should leave both performers and listeners with a feeling of good humor and affection. The title comes from my experience as a guest in the magnificent city of Sydney, Australia. One of its most attractive features is its unique system of ferry boats: the city is laid out around a large, multi-channeled harbor, with destinations more easily approached by water than by land. Consequently, inhabitants of Sydney get around on small, people-friendly boats that come and go from the central docks at Circular Quay. During a week's visit in 1991, I must have boarded these boats at least a dozen times, always bound for a new location - the resort town of Manley, or the Zoo at Taronga Park, or the shopping district at Darling Harbour. In casting about for a form for my second string quartet, a kind of loose rondo came to mind. Each new destination would be approached from the same starting-out point (although there are subtle variations in the repeating theme; it's always in a new key, and the texture is never the same). The result, I hope, is a sense of constant new information presented with introductory frames of a more familiar nature. The embarkation theme, which begins the piece, is a sort of bi-tonal fanfare in which the violins are in G major and the viola and cello are in B-flat major. It is bold, eager, and forward-looking. The first voyage maintains this bi-tonality, beginning as a 9/8 due for second violin and viola in a kind of rocking motion -much as a boat produces when reaching the deeper water in the harbor. A sweet, nostalgic theme emerges over this rocking accompaniment. This music is developed somewhat, then transforms quickly into a much faster and lighter episode, filled with rising and falling scales (again, in differing keys). A scherzando interlude in short notes and changing meters provides contrast, and the episode ends with a reprise of the scales. The second embarkation follows, this time in A major/C major. It leads quickly into a very warm and slow theme, in wide-leaping intervals for the viola. This section is interrupted twice by solo cadenzas for the cello, suggesting distant boat-horns in major thirds. The end of the episode becomes a transition, with boat-horns leading into the final appearance of the embarkation music, this time in trills and tremolos instead of sharply accented chords. The nostalgic theme of the first episode makes a final appearance, serving now as a coda. The rocking motion continues, in a lullaby fashion, leaving us drowsy and satisfied on our homeward journey. Harbor Music was written for the Cavani Quartet, and is dedicated to Richard J. Bogomolny. Commissioned by his employees at First National Supermarkets as a gift, it represents a thank you from many of the people (including this composer) who have benefitted from his vision and generosity. An ardent advocate of chamber music (and a cellist himself), Mr. Bogomolny has for many years been Chairman of the Board of Chamber Music America. -- Dan Welcher. $25.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

SATB choir - Level 4 SKU: CA.965850 Les Quatrains Valaisans V. Composed by Cyrill Schurch. Edited by Stefan Schuck. CARUS CONTEMPORARY. Chemin Qui Tourne (Lqv V). Secular choral music. Full score. 4 pages. Duration 2 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 09.658/50. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.965850). ISBN 9790007164959. Text language: French. Text: Rilke, Rainer Maria. Text by Rainer Maria Rilke. In his settings of five quatrains by Rilke, Cyrill Schurch explores the colorfulness of the literary model. His mainly homophonic, song-like style of setting corresponds to the compactness of the poetry. Schurch wanders freely, but always comprehensibly, through the keys and employs dissonances pointedly and economically. In this way, Schurch's songs for choir are comparable to Hindemith's sophisticated choral settings of Rilke, while speaking their very own tonal language. The short compositions with their poetically sanguine basic character will enrich every concert program focused on the topics of nature and landscape. They represent a rewarding project for any choir that finds pleasure in exploring tone colors and delicate emotional nuances. $5.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Orchestra Coro SATB, 2 Fl, 2 Ob, 2 Clt, 2 Fg, 4 Cor, 2 Tr, Timp, 2 Vl, Va, Vc, Cb SKU: CA.1039514 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Edited by Sven Hiemke. Violoncello. Secular choral music. Single Part, Cello. Op. 112. 4 pages. Duration 8 minutes. Carus Verlag #CV 10.395/14. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.1039514). ISBN 9790007245368. Language: German. Beethoven's Meeres Stille und Gluckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) op. 112 for four-part mixed chorus and symphony orchestra - his setting of a pair of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - defies straightforward categorization, but can best be described as a choral ode. Beethoven in fact never voyaged by sea, but his composition, premiered in 1815, continues to surprise even today. He depicted in music the smooth surface of the motionless water and the oppressive calm, which meant nothing other than being becalmed, a delayed voyage, and short rations in the era of sailing, with the same intensity as a freshening increasing wind, with which Aeolus, the God of the winds, ultimately enabled the longed-for prosperous voyage to take place. The composed calmness of the motionless sea is conveyed in the low register used throughout, in which the chorus sings the first poem accompanied by washes of pianissimo sounds on the strings. There is a surprising moment with the musical portrayal of the ungeheuere Weite (immense breadth), at which the vocal-instrumental writing suddenly crescendos to forte and unfolds into a texture of over five octaves. By contrast Gluckliche Fahrt is written in restlessly-compiled meters, whose musical setting in flowing movement with diatonic scale passages evokes happy excitement and confidence. The work was dedicated to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whom Beethoven greatly admired throughout his life. The work has now been published in a new critical edition based on the first printed edition and the performance score which Beethoven himself checked and corrected. Trombone and piano SKU: P2.80059 Composed by Alex van Duuren. Chamber music, 20th century. Published by Potenza Music (P2.80059). Impromptu for Trombone and Piano was written, as the title suggests, rather spontaneously. Classical improvisation has always been a favorite technique of mine; I very much enjoy simply sitting down at the piano and composing freely through improvisation, sometimes for up to forty-five minutes or more without a pause. These sessions for me are both personal and musical, but in a seemingly incompatible way, and with different affects. As a personal endeavor, I have always found improvisation to be essentially a meditative exercise for me; after a substantial bout of spontaneous music-making, playing the final note feels like emerging from a blurry and dream-like state. I've always enjoyed the markedly improved clarity and focus that I am granted in all my non-musical activities immediately following such an event. However in hindsight of my musical mind, these long sessions of improvisation have always been extremely unsatisfying...I'm not really able to retain any of the musical information which I created. The music that I made, with some choice moments of dictation-worthy value, is not only through-composed but essentially un-replicable. It has, of course, been suggested to me that I record these moments so that I might transcribe them later, however as with most creative things in this world, a true impromptu work requires complete spontaneity; I simply can't improvise anything of real value on my own command. This is the reasons that I feel lucky to have wrote this piece. I suppose it was luck of the draw to have a brief stint of enough patience to combine composition with short bursts of improvisation. As both a trombonist and a pianist, I am thankful to have the luxury of improvisational facility on both instruments. The result is that the work is truly a duet, in that both the trombone and piano parts contain original motives. It is not the case that the piano part serves to accompany a melody in the trombone, because some music which you hear from the piano came as improvisational ideas before a trombone part was superimposed on top of it. And, of course, the opposite is true as well. Essentially, Impromptu was written like a jigsaw puzzle made of oddly shaped pieces; two jagged and asymmetrical chunks become balanced only when they find each other. I hope you enjoy pulling the pieces apart as much as I enjoyed putting them together. $19.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Duration 420 seconds. Bote & Bock #M202536100. Published by Bote & Bock (HL.48025209). UPC: 196288133377. 9.0x12.0x0.162 inches. To mark the 100th birthday of Ursula Mamlok (1923 - 2016), Boosey & Hawkes Bote & Bock, in collaboration with the Dwight and Ursula Mamlok Foundation, is publishing a series of works from the composer's estate that were not published during her lifetime. Alariana, composed in 1985, is in many respects a “typical Mamlokâ€: The mixed instrumentation of winds and strings in distant registers makes for a transparent sound, the movement is airily polyphonic, and the five aphoristically short movements, together lasting about seven minutes, follow classical movement types in a contrastful alternation of characters. Of particular charm are a passacaglia over ostinato bassoon staccatos in the middle section of the fourth movement and the quiet ending of the fifth movement. $42.00 - See more - Buy online
