Mendelssohn wrote his piano-vocal score to Elijah in view of a parallel publication in England and Germany and he did so right after the world premiere, at a time when he was planning to subject the work to a thorough revision. The piano reduction, which actually did appear simultaneously in both countries in 1847, is thus of exceptional value as a source and reflects the revision process of the entire work. Moreover, the volume from the Complete Edition also contains two further piano arrangements from the masters hand: the Elijah Overture for piano four-hands and the well-known aria Hoere, Israel. English Dances, Set I, opus 27, is a light classic composition that was written for orchestra by the British composer Malcolm Arnold in 1950. The set contains four dances that continue without pause: the individual movements are indicated by the tempo markings. The work came about at the request of Bernard de Nevers, at the time the head of publisher Alfred Lengnick & Co., who asked Arnold to write a suite of dances as an English counterpart to Dvo ák’s Slavonic Dances and Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances. The première took place in the spring of 1951, played by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult. Following the success of the first set, DeNevers asked the composer to write a second one, which Arnold completed the next year (Op. 33). The Andantino from the first set has been skilfully arranged and orchestrated for brass band by Ray Farr. While he was in the middle of writing a large-scale musical production, Rik Elings sought diversion in composing these pieces for clarinet quartet. During a period of merciless deadlines, working on PLAYTIME 4 CLARINETS turned out to be an excellentway of release. Over the months that ensued from our initial meeting, the music on this CD grew out of meaningful exchanges between a composer and a conductor… Both works, The Fire of Love and Songs of Innocence, represent settings of profound poets that capture some essences of lives lived.  The English Romantic poet, Christina Rossetti (1830–1894), is chiefly known for her mystic religious lyrics. Her limited number of love poems are mostly of an unhappy nature, rather like objective expressions of happiness denied. A certain steely stoicism within her caused her to turn away from love twice in her lifetime with two separate men. There is no evidence of resolute refusal of love in this poem, however. Here she profusely proclaims her deep love for another. Wayland Rogers has set the last five lines of I Loved You First to music. The setting is an excerpt from his song cycle, I-Thou , which was commissioned and premiered by Fourth Coast Ensemble in Chicago in 2018. About the Series: Doreen Rao, 2019 Robert Shaw Award recipient, launches her culturally inclusive choral series, Global Encounters for Young Voices, featuring accessible treble- and mixed-voice works for developing choirs.

The beautiful fourteenth-century hymn Puer natus in Bethlehem has been set in Norwegian by composer Ørjan Matre. Matre has used a Norwegian folk tune that makes this a very unique offering for Christmas. Improvised lute, violin, and string bass can be used to add to its charm.
