This work was commissioned by the Friends of the Phoenix Public Library for the dedication of the new Music Room and made possible in part through the funds from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, and Meet the Composer-Arizona. Diary of a Journey was composed between July and September 1995 for the group Arpeggio. During the early summer of 1995, my wife and I took a vacation to Prague and Budapest. It was the first trip for both of us to these former Iron Curtain capitals. The train ride through the beautiful country-side, the dilapidated small villages and towns, the magnificent architecture and the feeling of grandeur in the two major cities left an indelible impression on me. I longed to write some kind of an essay about it. Diary of a Journey is the result of some of these thoughts, which were sketched (musically) as we visited each place. There are four 'snapshots' or movements which do not portray a specific scene, but rather try to capture the impressions I gathered from the people we observed and met, and the many awe-inspiring experiences we had. Throughout the journey, I felt that people were clinging to a tenacious hope for a better future, no matter how long it will take to realize it. In the first movement each player portrays a struggle against all odds, and with great energy and even wit tries to overcome the obstacles, ending on one serene high note as a resting point after all the conflict. The second 'snapshot' tries to capture the deep faith of a newly regained religiosity. It is chant-like, and uses as its basic melodic material a famous Czech hymn, penned by the great religious reformer John Huss. This movement is played very freely, without bar-lines and with the hymn shining through the fervent chanting. The third movement is a kind of 'demonic' scherzo. Fast and furious, the three instruments vie with one another in a true perpetual motion frenzy, which is at times relieved by short, more pastoral melodic fragments. A rather wild ending should leave everyone breathless. Finally, in the fourth 'snapshot' the instruments play a bit more as a team, meaning that is that there is more melody with accompaniment, and more imitative music giving the impression of a group effort. The energy is still at a high level but long lyrical lines abound, accompanied and interrupted at times by undulating fast notes still depicting the struggle against the blight which any visitor notices all around these countries, yet also showing the determination of the people to conquer adversity. --Samuel Adler.

Written as a testpiece in the 4th division for the Dutch Brass Band Championships in 2015, the music features challenging solo parts for cornet, soprano cornet, flugelhorn and euphonium. A great work for the concert stage!

Divertimento I and Divertimento II, for two violins were composed in 1996. These two sister compositions have the additional attraction of being unedited works which are representative of the composer's most recent style. This etymological description, which defines a personality rather than an established musical style, takes the form of a succession of contrasting dynamic movements. One of the most outstanding features is the way in which the two instruments break away from their usual range of sounds to create the ideal conditions for suggesting their latent extent of sound possibilities in compositions that could be extended perfectly well into a string quartet. The interplay between the two instruments opens up a whole range of possibilities: short motives in an imitative style often braking out into a repetition of brief themes with a lot of personality, sequences of transformations, repetitive rhythms, etc. All theses show the virtuosity of the players on their own and together and because of their characteristics, they are written in a very clear tonal language, a times, modal, oriental, or even pentatonic. The progression of the movements is governed by a desire for variety: between the fast opening and closing movements there is a sequence of relaxed andante -some of which are in an easy two-part canon style- in scherzzi -and these are the lightest, most airy fragments of the two Divertimenti. Divertimento I y Divertimento II, para dos violines fueron compuestos en el ano 1996. Un atractivo adicional de estas dos composiciones hermanas raya en su condicion de obras ineditas y representativas de la ultima manera del compositor. La acepcion etimologica, que define un caracter mas que una forma musical establecida, se concreta aqui en una sucesion de movimientos contrastados de gran dinamismo. Cabe remarcar la capacidad de los instrumentos para superar su estricto ambito sonoro y crear las condiciones idoneas para sugerir toda la amplitud sonora latente en unas composiciones que, con toda propiedad, podrian ser ampliadas en cuarteto de cuerda. El juego al que se someten los dos instrumentos se halla abierto a multiples posibilidades: breves motivos en estilo imitativo susceptibles de desembocar en elementos tematicos reiterados, poco desarrollados y de fuerte personalidad, mutaciones secuenciales, ritmos obstinados, etc., que propician el virtuosismo individual y colectivo de los ejecutantes y que, por sus caracteristicas, se inscriben en un lenguaje tonal muy claro, ocasionalmente abierto, tambien, a trazos modales y orientalizantes e, incluso, a lo pentatonico. El criterio que rige la progresion de los movimientos responde a simples razones de variedad: entre los fragmentos extremos rapidos, inicial y conclusivo, una sucesion de andante distendidos -a veces en un descanso estilo canonico a dos voces- y de scherzo los fragmentos mas ingravidos y aereos de los Divertimenti. The most important and only autograph source of the French Suites, the Klavierbüchlein für Anna Magdalena Bach (1722) contains the first three suites in fragments only, and the sixth not at all. This is why the numerous copies which have come down to us, are of special significance. Among the copies of major importance is the manuscript which for a long time had been attributed to Bach, and which comprises the first for suites in full (Deutsche Staastsbibliothek, Berlin) as well as the copy by Gerber (1725-26) and the second volume of the Klavierbüchlein (1925). A few manuscripts originating from the circle of Bach's pupils should also be added to them.The texts of thevarious copies show a lot of deviations. The present edition relies on the first formulation - at least where this can be decided at all - but it gives all the major devations of the copies as variants, either in footnotes or after the movement concerned. In the composition 'La terre' several aspects of Earth have been translated into sounds in an associative manner. The first part depicts Nature, Mother Earth, stability, the soil which is the source of life. Earth symbolizes tradition, rituals, fertility. In the music of the composition this can be heard in tonic and ostinato passages. Furthermore, human emotions such as gladness, sorrow, wonder, resignation, hope and despair, indissolubly connected as they are to mankind's life on earth, are musically reflected in sudden gusts of expression. Earth for us human beings is the solid ground on which everything in life takes place. In the second part different moodsare evoked in a sort of toccata. Now and then the music sounds fragmented, at other times as a solid whole. The robustness of the music in this part has its roots in the earth, originates from it. It reflects stability and strength, but love and nostalgia are also present in soft and fragile tones. 'La terre' is a musical narrative about Earth, in which music has been given ample room to show its many-sided beauty.

In het werk La terre worden op een associatieve manier allerlei elementen in klanken vertaald. De grondstoffen voor de instrumenten zijn de bouwstoffen voor de compositie. Het eerste gedeelte schildert de natuur, moeder aarde, houvast,de grond, waaruit alles voortkomt. De grond staat voor traditie, rituelen, vruchtbaarheid. In de muziek vertaalt zich dit in grondtonige passages, ostinato, maar ook de windvlagen van de inspiratie. De reflecties van menselijkeemoties, verbonden aan de aarde, het leven op de aarde, zijn o.a.: blijdschap, verdriet, verwondering, berusting, hoop, wanhoop. De aarde is de vaste grond, waarop alles zich voltrekt. In het tweede deel wordt gespeeld met destemmingen in een soort toccata. Soms verbrokkelt, dan weer als een massief geheel. De robuustheid van de klank is gegrond op de aarde, komt er uit voort. Er klinkt houvast en kracht in door, maar ook de liefde en nostalgie wordtervaren in de zachte en broze klanken. La terre is het verhaal van de aarde, waaruit muziek oprijst in zijn veelzijdige schoonheid.
