Bridge's early works - those written before the first World War - were more late Romantic in style, warmly expansive, than his mature works. The Adagio is a four-Voice fugue of poetic expressiveness that makes full use of the instrument's tonal resources.British composer Frank Bridge was active in the early decades of the 20th century and was a highly respected conductor, violist and teacher - his sole composition student having been Benjamin Britten. Britten honoured his former teacher in his work Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, based on a theme from one of Bridge's pieces for String quartet.

These five part-songs were composed over ten years from 1903 to 1913, but only the first was published in the composer's lifetime. British composer Frank Bridge is mainly remembered for his beautiful chamber music. The Four Pieces from 1912 are originally for Violin and Piano and are titled:1. Meditation2. Spring Song3. Lullaby4. Country DanceMr. Sauer has done a beautiful job scoring these works for Euphonium. There is a wonderful simplicity to Bridge's music, a simplicity that was lost forever just two years later at the beginning of the Great War, WW I. Bridge's most famous composition student was Benjamin Britten, who wrote one of his greatest works as an homage to Bridge.

Frank Bridge was one of the finest English composers of the first half of the 20th century. The Pageant of London is his only work for wind band, comprising of two marches, one scored from Bridge's best known organ piece and including the chimes of Big Ben, plus three short renaissance pastiche items, one arranged from Playford (later used by Peter Warlock in Capriol Suite). The music is tuneful, approachable, and, in the words of wind band legend Timothy Reynish makes a fine alternative to Holst's two suites, which were composed around the same time. Reynish has introduced this work to concert bands right across the world. It has been performed in USA and the Far East, recorded by the celebrated Kosei Wind Orchestra of Japan and also by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales in the Chandos edition of Bridge Orchestral Music.

Frank Bridge (1879--1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922, he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen's Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month. This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge's lively treatment of one of England's most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley's traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig's party in Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Timed to exploit the centenary of his best pupil, Benjamin Britten, Frank Bridge's reissued Capriccios for Piano Nos.1 and 2 of 1905 come up fresh as paint: Stainer & Bell's front cover alone - reproducing Panini's elaborate 1758 painting Capriccio of Rome - is worth long study. No 1 sounds like Moszkowski; No 2 (a better piece) is more typical, recalling Bridge's own Rosemary and The Sea, and contains some chords silently depressed and exposed by re-pedalling. ***** Showy and effective, and most recommendable.

Frank Bridge arranged this well known Irish air for string quartet, here presented in a version for wind quintet. Unusually, Bridge starts the arrangement with an extended fantasy upon the main theme, never stating it completely. A series of stabbing chords begin the music, and help to mark out the start of each section. Elements of the tune then weave in and out of the music, and are passed equally between all five players. The first four notes of the theme in rhythmic diminution are transformed into a delicate arpeggio that permeate the music, all accompanied with the lush chords of early 20th century English music. After about one hundred bars the music reaches an impassioned climax before the tune is finally stated in its full form, with each instrument in turn taking a solo phrase accompanied by the others. A final, peaceful coda using the delicate arpeggio of the first sections brings the piece to a close.
