Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Volume 9 of the new Urtext edition of Schubert's lieder contains lieder composed during the spring and summer of 1816, some of which follow upon series started in 1815. They are available in separate books for high, medium and low voice. The volume was completed by the eminent Schubert scholar Walter Dürr who passed away at the beginning of 2018. It was in 1816 that Schubert completed his settings of Ossian's songs and added lieder on texts by Johann Georg Jacobi, Johann Peter Uz and Matthias Claudius. Also included are the lieder from the Grob family songbook. In summer 1816 Schubert produced his first settings of poems by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart ('Grablied auf einen Soldaten” and 'An mein Klavier”), the author of the words to one of his most famous songs 'Die Forelle”/ 'The Trout” (see Volume 2)./ Répertoire / Basse et Piano

In addition to his symphonies, Franz Schubert also wrote and handed down to posterity a total of eight finished concert overtures (two of them in two versions) between ca. 1811 and 1819. With the exception of the “Overture in D” (D 4) to the comedy “Der Teufel als Hydraulicus” (“The Devil as Engineer”) and the “Overture in D” (D 26), whose original title was cut out of the manuscript, they are all compositions which are associated neither with a drama nor a programme. They thus embody the type of the pure concert overture at an astonishingly early point in the history of music and are also in keeping with this terminologically by virtue of explicitly not having any other appellations whatsoever in the title: the epithet common for two works “in the Italian style” was only added posthumously. Our volume sees publication for the first time of the “Italian Overture in C” (D 591) in its two authentic versions, this being in contrast to the performance tradition based on a potpourri of the sources. The widely handed-down but corrupted musical course of the “Overture in D” (D 590) has likewise been rectified for the first time. Overshadowed by his symphonies, Schubert’s overtures have hitherto been largely undervalued both in their reception and in musical practice – including the “Overture in E minor” (D 648), which sees Schubert venturing into radically new spheres of expression to a greater extent than in virtually any other of his works./ Recueil / Orchestre

Dans son arrangement virtuose pour piano de 'Widmung' de Schumann ('Du meine Seele, du mein Herz') ('Toi mon âme, toi mon coeur'), Franz Liszt transforma ce lied intimiste en une confession dramatique dont la puissance sonore culmine sur 'Mein guter Geist, mein bess'res Ich' (mon bon esprit, mon moi meilleur) avec des accords exécutés con somma passione. Dans le manuscrit autographe de Liszt, le texte du lied est également écrit au-dessus de la mélodie. Complete Edition. Par LISZT FRANZ. Supplementary Volume 16 of the New Liszt Edition contains free arrangements and technical exercises. In the first section can be found early versions of three arrangements. The first consists of the first and intermediary versions of a transcription of Die Rose, a song Schubert composed to a poem by Schlegel. The arrangement of the second movement of Berlioz's Harold Symphony also draws on literary inspiration: Lord Byron's (1788-1824) narrative poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-18) was a literary experience Liszt shared with Berlioz. The fantasy on themes from Bellini's opera La sonnambula [The Sleepwalker] (here the first version of 1842, and the second version dating from the following decade are given) is important in music history because it was while he worked on this (and other operatic fantasies) that Liszt developed a new concept of the form, which took shape in more complex and more concentrated fantasies than before. Particularly interesting material can be found in the appendix. In addition to sketches and drafts for arrangements of Spanish themes, there are three sources published here for the first time, which shed light on technical aspects of Liszt's piano teaching. These are three sets of exercises: the first written by Liszt himself for Valérie Boissier in 1832, the second a copy in an unidentified hand from the same period or slightly later, and finally the third which was noted down in 1871 by Henri Maréchal in Rome based on the composer's dictation. This latest volume of the New Liszt Edition includes a detailed preface in German, English, and Hungarian containing new research findings, together with five manuscript facsimiles and critical notes.
