No other work by Mozart is so enshrouded in myth as his final composition the D-minor Requiem. Mozart died before its completion and the missing sections had to be added by others. The many handwritten copies circulated after his death added to the corruption of the text by contributing errors of their own. Now Peters is publishing a new urtext edition of this staple of the choral repertoire edited by David Black. The edition relies on Mozart’s composition and the traditional completion by Franz Xaver Süssmayr. For the first time however it incorporates sources previously unavailable to earlier editions including the Neue Mozart-Ausgabe.

Süssmayr-Version-The history of the genesis of the Requiem is entwined with legends and anecdotes. The burdens of the composition and performance of La Clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflöte and an acute infection led to the collapse and death of the composer following a short illness. Mozart left his wife in considerable debt. Constanze therefore turned to Mozart?s friends asking them to complete the fragment. After two failed attempts the task passed to Mozart?s pupil Franz Xaver Süßmayr who completed the Requiem in the form known today using working materials that are no longer extant and perhaps verbal instructions from the composer. Today the Süßmayr version is still the most well known and it is doubtless the one with the closest historical ties to Mozart. Süßmayr?s version of the Requiem has been published in a new edition which is true to the original sources.

Mozart?s Requiem has entered the realm of myth. This is surely the best-known of all sacred choral works and is performed all over the world. Now a new version for solo voices chorus and organ allows this legendary masterpiece to be performed without orchestra and thus without strain on the budget. The choral writing has been taken unaltered from the Urtext of the New Mozart Edition while the organ part by Martin Focke adheres strictly to the original orchestral writing.
