Inspired by his life-long interest in chant and choral music, Paul Mealor's De profundis pushes the boundaries of the human voice in a style synonymous with Russian orthodox music. In spring 2012 this piece sparked the 'Bass Hunter' competition - a world-wide talent search for the lowest human voice in existence. The note, an 'E' (329 Hertz), is six notes below the lowest note ever written for a choral piece (from Rachmanivov's 'Vespers? - a B flat), and a whole tone lower than the Guinness World Record-holder - a sung 'F sharp'. Robert van Beringen s’est inspiré d’un grand thème classique pour cette marche de funérailles, dont le trio mélancolique nous rappelle l’ Adagio qui semblerait en fait avoir été composé, selon de récentes découvertes, par le musicologue Remo Giazotto d’après un fragment d’une sonate d’Albinoni retrouvé parmi les ruines de la bibliothèque de Dresde, après son bombardement durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. It is, on the contrary, an audio CD which has been recorded for sale as a trio CD under my name. Mixing the recordings at the studio, however, gave us the idea to offer this CD Legal Paradizer also as a play along CD. For this reason I have never taken a pedagogic approach to the musical conception of the pieces performed, which, in my opinion, is exactly what makes these recordings so unique. The structure of none of the pieces is, for instance, as simple as that of the tunes on some other play along CDs. Therefore, I have taken the liberty of adding a short explanationand/or comment on every piece meant to make it easier for you to follow the road map of the tunes. Additionally I have explained some stylistic features to help you interprete the individual pieces. Working with my students has shown me how much fun it can be to also offer groove and funk oriented music on a CD to play along. In most of the pieces you do not necessarily have to follow the changes; you should rather develop simple ideas in time. His latest collections 'In the Zoo” and 'In the Zoo 2” were great fun and had the bonus of concealing useful technical studies in the music so that young players could improve their technique without knowing they were working hard! Aleksey wondered how he could follow these books and decided to choose animals that few people even knew existed. So, in 'Funny Animals”, for violin and piano, we meet such creatures as the Panda Ant, the Aye-Aye and the Dumbo Octopus! The animals are introduced with texts and pictures by his friend Magdalena Hoffmann. Aleksey says that, if you only want to play the music, that's great but he provides lots of theatrical instructions for a stage performance. You might find yourself blowing kisses to the audience or playing while standing on one leg! If you have the nerve to do this and film yourself for YouTube he says you should mention his name and tag him and you will find yourself featured on his own homepage. The Pavane for a Dead Princess is considered to be one of Ravel's most popular works. The solemn and stately court dance strutting along in an even pulse turns into a melancholic, yet not sombre dirge.This Pavane is dedicated to the Princess of Polignac. Trying to put a stop to rampant poetic interpretations of the composition's title, Ravel made a point of stating that ?When I phrased the title, I was merely interested in having the fun of creating a pun. Pavane pour une Infante Défunte - the alliterations can hardly be ignored.'
