Par FAURE GABRIEL. Being such a prolific composer, particularly for Vocal and Piano works, Gabriel Fauré 's music is always addressed with high expectations. His Le Chanson D'Éve for Voice and Piano accompaniment is no exception. Fauré (1845-1924) began receiving high quality musical instruction from age 10 at the Niedermeyer School. He eventually became a piano pupil of Camille Saint-Saëns. Fauré 's career saw him succeed Théodore Dubois as organist at the Church of Madeleine in Paris and become professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, all the while composing sublime works. His song cycle Le ChansonD'Éve was composed between 1906 - 1910. As Fauré 's longest song cycle, Le Chanson D'Éve is made up of ten melodies based on poetry by Charles Van Lerberghe. Vol.1 Premières Mélodies. Par FAURE GABRIEL. Gabriel FAURE est né à Pamiers (Ariège), le 12 mai 1845. Ses dons précoces pour la musique lui permirent d'entrer dès l'âge de neuf ans à la célèbre Ecole Niedermeyer fondée à Paris pour former les organistes et les maîtres de chapelle : durant une dizaine d'années, il y reçut un enseignement de grande qualité, axé principalement sur l'étude de la musique sacrée et des grands chefs-d'oeuvre classiques, auxquels l'initia notamment Camille Saint-Saëns, son professeur de piano. Dès sa sortie de l'Ecole, Fauré entama une brillante carrière d'organiste. En 1896, il succéda à Théodore Dubois à l'orgue de la Madeleine et fut nommé professeur de composition au Conservatoire : il y eut pour élèves Ravel, Koechlin, Enesco, Schmitt. Entre-temps, il avait rencontré Liszt à Weimar et s'était initié à l'art de Wagner dont il ne subit pas véritablement l'influence. Appelé en 1905 à la direction du Conservatoire de Paris, après la démission de Théodore Dubois, membre de l'Institut, critique musical, Fauré vécut ses dernières années dans l'isolement, frappé par une irréversible surdité qui le contraignit à démissionner du Conservatoire en 1920. Il est mort à Paris, le 4 novembre 1924. La musique de ce compositeur quelquefois incompris et qui toucha à presque tous les genres (hormis l'orgue), se révèle d'une grande subtilité. Centering on the important series of the “Impromptus”, the collection of “Pièces brèves”, and the “Trois Romances sans paroles”, the present volume also gathers piano works by Gabriel Fauré that are either unpublished or little-known. It is of additional interest insofar as it draws attention to a series of pieces dating from his earliest creative period. The young composer’s progress can thus be followed, from his student work at the “École de musique classique et religieuse” to the earliest masterpieces for piano born between 1875 and 1880. These scores show Fauré’s ability to imitate styles of the past, crafting preludes and fugues, a sonata in the Viennese tradition, and character pieces deriving straight from Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Chopin. Through them, a musical personality emerges little by little: its signs are tenuous in the “Sonate”, in the early versions of the “Fugues”, and in the “Trois Romances”, but they are more in evidence in the “Mazurke”, the “Gavotte”, and the “Prélude” in E minor. Of his early compositions, Fauré, to be sure, retained only what is included in this volume, namely those pieces which he deemed most personal and suitable for publication. All of these compositions are remarkable for their individual flavour. Despite the diverse origin of its constituent parts the contrasted “Pièces brèves” collection is unjustly neglected, as it forms an ensemble of high quality, with a search for concision that anticipates the “Neuf Préludes”. Next to the “Nocturnes” and “Barcarolles”, the five “Impromptus”, vigorously crafted between 1881 and 1906, show a composer with ever increasing creative powers who crosses borders in the pursuit of his artistic ideas. Beside the first versions of the 3rd “Romance” and two “Pièces brèves”, the appendices to the present volume include the interesting piano solo version of the “Pavane” doubtlessly penned by the composer, as well as the cadenzas to piano concertos by Beethoven and Mozart which he wrote for his students and, later, for the pianist Marguerite Hasselmans.
