This humorous little vignette for string quartet was composed in 1979 and was originally intended to be published by Piedmont Music, the ASCAP division of EB Marks Classical. For reasons unknown, however, it remained in manuscript form until 2021, when a copy of the composer's autograph parts was discovered in the archives of a completely different Alan Shulman piece. This newly engraved Latham Music edition therefore represents the first publication of Shulman's delightful work, as well as the first full score. As the title suggests, this is a medium-slow rag, or cakewalk in a loose AABA form. The bluesy and graceful main melody is introduced by the first violin in a call and response exchange with the rest of the ensemble. The restatement of the primary theme is led by the second violin, with the entire ensemble playing pizzicato, having the effect of playful mockery. In the B section, the first violin earnestly reasserts the stately grace from the opening however, the cello is clearly becoming restless and decides to take over the lead just before the final reprise. The lighthearted ending again has the first violin doing its best to bring the tune to a refined conclusion, but the rest of the group still has mischief in mind. After a couple moments of seeming confusion, the ensemble regroups at last and plays the final riff with resolute emphasis. If you're looking to add a light moment to a recital program, or looking for a short, medium level contest piece that players and audiences alike will enjoy, this little miniature is an ideal choice!

The present reduction derives from the critical edition of the score, published in this catalog in November 2019. Antonio Vivaldi's La Dorilla, a heroic-pastoral opera on a libretto by Antonio Maria Lucchini, was premiered at the Teatro Sant'Angelo in Venice on 6 November 1726. Six years later it was revived in a much shortened and altered form at the Sporck Theatre in Prague. In 1734 it returned for the last time to the Venetian stage at the Teatro Sant Angelo, where, despite being greatly revised, it was once again successful. Many of its recitatives had been shortened and several arias replaced, some with movements borrowed from other operas by Vivaldi and some with arias taken from ones by other composers, such as Johann Adolf Hasse, Geminiano Giacomelli, Domenico Sarro and Leonardo Leo. The adaptation was the work of the Venetian man of letters Bartolomeo Vitturi, who adjusted the libretto with the precise aim of satisfying the demands of the public, which wished to hear the most famous pieces by the composers who were fashionable in those years. This vocal-score edition includes a synthetic introduction of the historical context, the description of the main source employed and a choice of the critical Notes to the musical text.

Sibelius No. Zero?
ISBN 9790004803202. 10 x 12.5 inches.
Whoever is looking for orchestral works in several movements by Sibelius before the seven officially numbered symphonies will run into Kullervo op. 7, as well as Lemminkainen op. 22. Sibelius follows a cyclical concept in these four tone poems, so that Lemminkainen, owing to its time of origin, can truly be labeled as his Symphony No. Zero. The previously unprinted early versions, presented in the respective volume of the Complete Edition for the first time, can be dated to the year 1895/96. The first revision was made in 1897, after the world premiere. Only after this premiere did Sibelius write his First Symphony before he again revised the Lemminkainen scores some of them much later and had them published.

It so happens, time and again, that composers have written one work or another with great élan and then withheld it for a while. This is rather an exception with Sofia Gubaidulina. Nonetheless, several decades passed before the striking “Tatar Dance” for bayan and two double basses - unusual simply in view of its instrumental combination - could now be published as a printed edition. The “Tatar” Dance was composed in 1992, and it is thanks to the bayan virtuoso Friedrich Lips that he continued to speak to the composer about this wonderful composition and motivated her to have it published. Lips has now edited the work which is full of magnificent new sounds, with the double basses forming a sonorous counterpoint to the bayan. The world premiere of the chamber work “Tatar Dance” was given on 25 July 1992 by the soloists Elsbeth Moser (bayan), Wolfgang Güttler and Alexander Suslin (both double bass) in Hitzacker. Sofia Gubaidulina dedicated this work to Viktor Suslin.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949) wrote his VIOLIN CONCERTO IN D MINOR, Op. 8, between 1881 and 1882, and it remained his only foray in that genre. Composed while a teenager and still in school. While still very much a product of the Romantic era tradition, the work is not considered as distinctive as the works he would produce only a few years later, and Strauss himself later ridiculed the work. Still, with inventive and bold writing in the solo and hints of his mature harmonic style to come, there is much to enjoy in the work, including its warmth, youthful sincerity, and lyrical expression, so that it should not be dismissed as mere juvenilia, either by contemporary audiences or Strauss himself. The chamber version of the concerto was first performed in Vienna on December 5, 1882, with the dedicatee Benno Walter on the violin while Strauss played his own piano reduction. The premiere for the orchestral version would take place seven years later in Cologne on March 4, 1890, with Walter again performing the solo with an orchestra conducted by Franz Wüllner. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set): Solo Violin.

‘Christmas Colours’ is a palette consisting of several Christmas songs. Bruce Fraser has mainly used the colours green (the colour of holly) and white (the colour of snow). This composition begins with the chiming of festive bells - if you listen well, however, you can already hear short fragments from 'The Holly and the Ivy', whose entire melody is finally played, alternated with 'The Sussex Carol'. After this, the pace slows down and the stately 'See amid the Winter Snow' sounds, but parts from 'Jingle Bells' and 'Silent Night' can also be heard. Then, after walking under 'The Holly and the Ivy' once again, the celebration of Christmas may begin!

Au coeur du Tibet (In the Heart of Tibet) was commissioned by the - then newly founded - Association for the development of saxophone. The members wanted to mark that event with several first performances given simultaneously in different cities of Switzerland, France and United States, which all were schedulded February 11, 2000. The piece starts with rhythms and finger drummings on the soundboard of the guitar. Then, within a long meditation, the heart starts to beat, interrupted by silences. The tension culminates into a sequence full of life and movements, followed by rhythmical noises on the saxophone keys accompanied by the gitarre, as a reminiscence of tibetan sounds: spoken words, ritual horn (Dung Chen) and a drum. And the heart is beating again. A tibetan singing bowl is ending the piece and I hope it will keep resonding for a long time... Caroline Charrière, July 2008.

Inspired by the alluring, human-like sound of the Ney (a Persian bamboo flute), Ranjbaran aims not only to highlight the modern flutist’s ability to play agile and brilliant passages, but also to emulate the delicate sound of the Ney, particularly in extended solo passages. The three-movement 27-minute concerto was commissioned by the Philadelphia Orchestra for its principal flutist Jeffrey Khaner. The piano reduction (published separately) was designed by the composer to be practical in recital performances. CONCERTO for Flute and Orchestra has been recorded for Naxos by Érik Gratton with the Nashville Symphony conducted by Giancarlo Guerrero. The melancholic tone of the Ney (the Persian bamboo flute) is known for its alluring sound, emulating the human voice.  In Persian literature, the Ney is considered a mystic instrument capable of expressing deep human emotions. In writing my flute concerto, I aimed not only to highlight the modern flautist’s ability to play agile and brilliant passages but also to emulate the delicate sound of the Ney, particularly in extended solo flute passages. Two prominent characters permeate the first movement of my concerto.  They are marked in the score as lamentoso, and con spirito, expressing grief and loss, and joy of living respectively.  The lament is mostly expressed in several extended cadenzas for solo flute while the con spirito consists of robust and energetic fast sections played by all forces of the orchestra.  Apart from these two characters there are moments of mystery, comedy and the grotesque, among others. In the second movement, the lyrical and poetic character of the flute is prominently presented in dream-like passages surrounded by shimmering and tender orchestral colors.  The solo flute is left out in an agitated middle section that references the first movement.  In the third section of the movement the solo flute returns in meditative fashion culminating in a duet with the harp. The third movement is written as one continuous quasi scherzo, challenging the limits of agility and brilliance of the flute.  Some of the materials from the earlier movements are presented again with joyous character.  The coda elevates the concerto into its brightest and most festive character, driving to the end with relentless energy.

The word “nexus” is defined as a tie or link between people and events. Nexus, for solo trumpet and band, includes several links between composer James Curnow and educator Alfred Watkins, to whom the work is dedicated. A well-known theme (particularly to Mr. Watkins' students) is drawn upon as the piece utilizes two primary musical settings. An energetic and agile scherzo appears in the beginning and again at the end, and is contrasted with an expressive Ballad theme. The soloist at the premiere (and on the recording) is Christopher Watkins, Alfred's son! This is a well-crafted and rewarding work for soloist and band alike. In the past years, French music has become a focal point of Breitkopf's orchestral library. With Edouard Lalo's popular violoncello concerto, these new editions of French music now bring publishers Breitkopf and G. Henle together once again in another example of their proven cooperation. Peter Jost, an expert on French music who established his claim to expertise through his Debussy, Franck and Saint-Saens editions, ensures a flawless Urtext edition which is based for the first time on the autograph piano reduction. This piano-cello score shows traces of several layers of arrangements, the last two of which were obviously not taken into account in the first edition. The new edition thus offers a wealth of new, authentic readings.A carefully researched text with clear and spacious printing highlights this sympathetic collaboration of two esteemed publishing houses, Breitkopf & Hartel and Henle. Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) composed a song in 1915 titled Österreischischer Soldatenabschied (Austrian Soldier's Song of Farewell) for the Austrian War Relief Fund. This work inspired the set of four songs titled Lieder des Abschieds (Abschiedslieder; Songs of Farewell), Op. 14, each contemplating the unwilling separation of loved ones, which was written between 1920 and 1921 for alto and piano. These melancholy works are considered among Korngold's finest songs. Songs: 1. Sterbelied (Requiem); 2. Dies eine kann mein Sehnen nimmer fassen (The one thing my desire can never comprehend); 3. Mond so gehst du wieder auf (Moon once again you rise); 4. Gefasster Abschied (Calm Farewell) - this is based on the earlier Österreischischer Soldatenabschied. This version was first performed on November 5, 1921, in Vienna, the composer on the keyboard. Korngold also conducted the premiere of his orchestral version on January 14, 1923, also in Vienna.
