Johann Pachelbel born in Nuremberg in 1653 a generation before Bach is one of Southern Germany?s most important post-Reformation organ composers. His compositions were already widely known at the time. The most popular worktoday is probably the canon with ensuing gigue in D major. The canon - according to the source ?a 3 Violinis con Basso c.? - is built up over an ostinato bass whose two bar fi gure is repeated a total of 28 times. The followingshort gigue is also in a strict contrapuntal style. It is not known when the work was composed. As with most of his other chamber music works Pachelbel might have composed it during his time in Thuringia between 1677 and 1695.This pleasing work is also popular with amateur ensembles.

Béla Bartók composed his 44 Violin Duos in 1931, at the urging of the German violin pedagogue Erich Doflein. With two exceptions, all the pieces are based on original folk music themes, most of which the composer himself collected in the course of his numerous collecting trips to the Carpathian Basin and in Algeria. Although conceived as parts of a pedagogically motivated set, these little pieces are highly effective in concert performance as well. The viola transcriptions follow Bartóks original faithfully. / 2 Altos

Not a self-teaching manual, and not filled with off-putting diagrams, this series is a wholly practical guide to singing - learning about technique and interpretation through the repertoire itself. Each volume is devoted to singing in one particular language or to singing in a specific context. In each volume of the series, works from the vocal canon have been selected specifically by Mary King for their technical and musical challenges. Any student will find that these books enrich and complement their vocal studies. Singing in GERMANGerman can seem like an awkward language to sing - there are just too many consonants! And there are lots of regional differences in accent: is there a 'correct' pronunciation? What exactly is an Umlaut? Why is 'ss' sometimes written 'ß' and does it make a difference? This book addresses all these points and more, giving singers the confidence to approach repertoire in German. / Voix Haute Et Piano

Hans Abrahamsen's Flowersongs (1973) for three Flutes. Score. 'I wrote Flowersongs for three Flutes in the spring of 1973 when I was 20 years old. Looking back now 40 years begins to feel like a really long time and sometimes I think that it is as if someone in 1973 is talking about a piece from 1933! But in spite of this long time this is still a very important piece for me. In Flowersongs along with works like '10 Preludes' for String Quartet and 'Stratifications' for Orchestra I feel that I was on my way to finding my own voice in the middle of the music of the great Central Europeanmodernist tradition from the 50s and the reaction from the 60s of the new simplicity minimalism and the possibility of poly-stilisme. The English title Flowersongs links to the flower power movement and the hippie culture of the 60s and the early 70s and the work is trying to find the power inherent in this imaginary world. Many of my later works have titles in German for example 'Winternacht' (1976/78) 'Nacht und Trumpeten' (1981) and much later 'Schnee' (2006-08). If we think of Flowersongs in German it must be Blumenlieder and to me it now sounds suddenly very different more romantic and into the world of Schumann. Perhaps it is also a way in which to hear the piece? Another thing is that the correct English title is Flower Songs (as two words) and not as one word like in German or Danish. This is perhaps the German connection as I incorrectly wrote the title as one word; but perhaps it is also a kind of naivety which is also part of the work. I cannot help but carry with me to this day the ideas from my early works. For example there are clear links in this work from the 8th Prelude from '10 Preludes' and to Canon 2a from 'Schnee' from 2008. This work is written for the wonderful ensemble recherche and it was meeting them that made me consider making a version of

In 1832 the Royal Philharmonic Society of London honoured the young German composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy with several commissions. One of the works composed as a result was the A major symphony the ?Italian? based on Mendelssohn?s experiences in Italy in 1830 and 1831. The work was premiered in 1833 conducted by the composer.Today the Italian Symphony has a firm place in the canon of classical masterworks though at its premiere and both the following performances the work was not entirely positively received.Mendelssohn himself was unhappy with it. In 1834 he revised the last three movements but didnot complete this revision. To this day the early version of the ?Italian? is the one played everywhere whilst the revised version has remained to a large extent unknown. Bärenreiter?s critical new edition edited by Christopher Hogwood includes all the performance material for the complete version of 1833 together with the last three movements in the composer?s revised version. Conductors can now choose between the early and revised versions; the revised one includes the first movement from the early version.- A famous work for the Mendelssohn anniversary year in a new Urtext edition.- With the well-known early version and the composer?s revised version.- Includes an informative foreword in English and German.- With facsimile pages.- Full score & performance material (BA9094) available for sale.

Many believe that even if Johannes Brahms had not composed his German Requiem the Song of Destiny would still have placed him among the first rank of composers for Orchestra and Chorus. Shorter than the Requiem the Song of Destiny is composed in three movements for SATB Chorus on an unfinished work by Friedrich H lderlin. The work is widely loved and frequently performed and recorded. The Rev John Troutbeck the translator of the German original into English for this edition was a minor canon at Westminster Abbey as well as a gifted linguist who created translations of works for most of the great Choral works of the 19th century. Several of his translations havepersisted as the only English versions of their works for more than a century beyond his death in 1899.

As the title suggests this work is a partita: it consists of a number of variations on a chorale melody. The partita has been popular for centuries especially when it comes to organ music. Henk van Belcum who is active in the choir world chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare the second variation follows based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel?s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms.

With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116), Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8), works by three different composers are selected for each volume of the Urtext Primo series, with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. The pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. This is what distinguishes the Urtext Primo approach from almost all common anthologies. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The Urtext Primo volumes are published in the internationally recognised standard of the Wiener Urtext editions. The explanations included in each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles, music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces.Volume 4 combines works of the German Romanticism by Schumann, Brahms and Theodor Kirchner. Apart from well known pieces from Schumann's 'Album for the Youth' and the easiest waltzes from opus 39 (in the easier version) by Brahms, the selection contains the attractive set of variations from Schumann's first Youth Sonata Op. 118/1 and Brahms' Saraband in A minor WoO 5/1 as well as a number of pleasant pieces by Theodor Kirchner which continue the tonal air of Schumann and Brahms in easy playable pieces. / Piano

Henk van Belcum, who is active in the choir world, chose for his Partita Piccola the German hymn Wunderbarer König as a starting point. Partita Piccola consists of four variations and a choral setting. After a majestic opening fanfare, the second variation follows, based on a canon by Pachelbel. Händel’s Sarabande is the basis of the third variation. Next comes the chorale setting, after which the work ends festively with a dance that has been written in the form of a courante. PartitaPiccola is an asset for church services and for concert platforms. / Niveau : 2.5 / Pièce de concert / Répertoire / Concert Band
