The work has a military feel in the opening fanfare, but settles down to an angular melody with frequent changes in time signature. There is the possibility of adding extra drummers near the end - a drum corps was used behind the Band in the first performance making a stunning effect.

PANACHE was commissioned by Lt. Peter Rutterford who was then Director of Music for the Band of the Royal Marines (FOSNI). Peter was about to leave the Rosyth and wanted to have a celebratory work for his departure. The resulting piece was titled by him and to reflect his outgoing personality, and the first performance was given by Lt. Rutterford with the Royal Marines Band in the Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline, Scotland.

A set of variations on an Irish folk tune for full concert band by Ian Vlemmiks. This rousing tune is presented in many guises – folk sounding,  rousing, toe tapping sections give way to slower and more reflective/mournful variations . The music then switches from compound time to simple time for a march-like section, before a switch back to compound time for a richly chromatic version. Finally, brass fanfares and woodwind trills lead to a big finish. Great for the concert platform, the simpler phrase structures make this piece fairly straightforward to follow, even if some parts are technically harder (particularly flute 1 and clarinet 1).

The late William Ferris composed this large, festive work specifically for the dawn of the new millenium and it received its premiere on January 2, 2000. It is based on the words of Psalm 118. A fanfare at the opening provides the sturdy musical material for the entire work. The choir first enters with the words, It is good to give thanks to the Lord. The opening section is full of wonderful sonority for choir, brass and organ. A repeat of the opening fanfare leads to the middle section, based on modal harmonies and reflective in spirit. The fanfare returns and opens the final section with triumphant words, This is the day that the Lord has made. The work ends in a very declamatory manner. This is a splendid new festival work that can be performed in any liturgical season.

Allegro Brillante is the first movement of Dragonland for band. The first performance (under the original title, A Short Symphony) was given by the L.E. Dieruff High School Concert Band, conducted by Raymond S. Becker, Jr., on April 21, 1978. The work was subsequently revised, and first performed in its new version by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphony Band, conducted by Donald S. George, on November 23rd, 1980. Allegro Brillante is the first movement of four. The music is almost profligate in its tunefulness, quick to change tack and tempo, and will benefit from an interpretation of headstrong abandon.
