Carl Vineâ??s Concerto for Orchestra was premiered to critical acclaim by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra in October 2014. Its composer describes the way the 20-minute work (like his recent Piano Trio The Village) â??evolves organically through a chain of episodes to create a web of melodies and harmonies that are related but not identical. This network of ideas is tied together by strong lateral bonds but remains fluid and flexible creating a series of fleeting glimpses what Prokofiev called visions fugitives abstract patterns glimpsed in the half-light or imagined behind clouds.â??

Par GLERUP RUNE. My violin concerto would never have been written if I had not met Isabelle Faust. At a time when I had not written a single note for several months, doubting if I would ever write anything again, her interest and energy was the cause of new inspiration. Just as important was her special way of playing - with intellect, heart and a rare, delicate sensibility. Her personality and musicianship struck a chord in me, in my music, which gave my thoughts a new direction.
The violin concerto marks a change in my music towards a simpler and lighter expression. An expression that also contains detached glimpses from my childhood's endless summers by the North Sea. Birds, high and slow on a blue sky, and the evening quietly descending. The special light, the distant sounds. But also the confusion, repetitions and dead ends of the world. An expression that, more than in my previous music, is 'About Light and Lightness.'

PrefaceThe three movements of the quartet may be perceived as three different expressions of an unstable core: an inherent unrest leads to frequent changes of direction. The first movement is full of dramatic contrasts; it is followed by a second movement whose basic mood of meditative rest is challenged by occasional centrifugal utbursts while the third movement takes the inherent conflicts to a higher level contrasting material of introspective lyricism with excessively pathetic moods. The final ?way out? is a retrograde one (back) ?into the source?: through a constant accelerando-diminuendo the piece disappears into a vanishing point. The ?into thesource? of the title may be visualized as a reversed fountain-action: the broad fan-like spread of the first movement a more coherent-solid second movement and finally - in the third movement - a return-run ever more vehemently like a suction into the spring itself ?The musical motifs are varied; there are traffic-situations (which I heard!) with stomping and machine-like rhythms in different but simultaneous tempi and there are more abstract upwards and downwards half-tone-scales with changing accents creating glimpses of melodies.INTO THE SOURCE String Quartet No. 9 was composed on a double-commission from the Orion Quartet and the Vertavo Quartet. The premiere performances took places in Santa Fé in 2002 and in Oslo in 2003.Per Nørgård

Despite his having moved to the United States with his family when he was 11 years old Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada where glimpses of his talent had already begun to manifest themselves at an early age. Among Dett's earliest titles was his Characteristic March Two-Step After the Cakewalk. Perhaps written when Dett was just a teenager this current edition is wholly based upon its original 1901 band publication that was arranged by Lee Orean Smith. Smith was also responsible for preparing Dett's piano solo version for publication as well as its form for theatre orchestra and mandolin club. Owing to the fact that Smith's highly idiomatic scoring wasprepared for a band of that period this edition adapts edits and extends Smith's instrumentation in order to make it possible for Dett's music to become available to a new generation of musicians and listeners alike. First performed on 28th October 2006 by the Royal LiverpoolPhilharmonic Orchestra at The Philharmonic Hall Liverpool with Alison Balsom (to whom the work is dedicated) as soloist and JoAnn Falletta conductor. The Turku Philharmonic Orchestra gave the Finnish premiére performances on23rd and 24th November 2006.The Piano reduction of Desolation Wilderness includes Trumpet parts in B flat and C. (Suitable for advanced players).'In Early November 2005 my family and some friends visited thehigh Sierra Nevada in Northern California. As on former trips to the area I was struck by the strange and disarming contrast between the bright sunshine perfect blue sky and warm mountain air of the Sierran autumn; and theoccasional icy chill - sudden drops of temperature when the sun vanished behind the mountains momentary glimpses through the trees of distant snow clouds over the highest peaks. Nowhere was this dichotomy more apparent than inthe vast area of forests lakes and mountains known as Desolation Wilderness. Here the twisted shapes of the aspens are testament to the destructive power of winter. Sure enough that night the first snows fell and the highmountain passes we'd just crossed were closed till spring.

Walter Piston is better known for his symphonic and larger scale orchestral compositions mostly of a secular nature. In fact this is his only religious composition. It was premiered it at Brandeis University on May 9 1959. The joyful and sprightly musical content of the first part is expressed with shifting accents modal chanting and exquisite orchestration. The prayer that follows is substantially darker and more troubled though Piston’s skill is to present glimpses of light and relief. This SATB version includes a rehearsal Piano reduction by the composer.

Gems in their own right these songs offer tantalizing glimpses of what might have been had Browne been granted time. The life of gifted composer Organist musician and teacher W Denis Browne was cut cruelly short when at age 26 he was mortally wounded at the battle for Gallipoli just a few weeks after he buried his friend the poet Rupert Brooke on Skyros. In his brief years he had a particularly active musical life showing brilliance in his music criticism and composing a few works most of which were destroyed at his request after his death. These six songs and in particular To Gratiana Dancing and Singing demonstrate great gifts proceeding from bud to bloom andanticipating some of the impressionistic later works of Debussy.

Composer arranger and Pianist Bizet might have become the most renowned opera ...(+)
Composer arranger and Pianist Bizet might have become the most renowned opera composer in France had he not died aged 36 just one month after the premiere of Carmen. He was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire in 1848 and excelled under the tutelage of Zimmerman Halévy and Gounod as well as winning major prizes including the Prix de Rome in 1857. After travels in Italy he settled back in Paris and while struggling to secure commissions for his operas worked as a rehearsal pianist and an arranger of works for piano. His first staged work Les pêcheurs de perles was premiered at the Théâtre Lyrique in 1863 and met with a hostile press but itimpressed Berlioz and the director of the theatre Léon Carvalho would become a firm supporter. More successful were La jolie fille de Perth (1866) his suite from the incidental music to L’Arlésienne (1872) and his Jeux d’enfants for piano duet. In Carmen the scandalous story and Bizet’s depiction of the tragic heroine both outraged and intrigued and the opera ran for 47 performances in its first year and soon spread internationally. The music was a fulfilment of his genius for characterisation that had been seen in glimpses in his earliest works and the abundance of memorable tunes and fine orchestration continues to inspire generations of singers and musicians. Based upon the 1875 published version of the opera—with revisions and restorations by Jean-Claude Hartemann and further editorial overview by David Lloyd-Jones— the edition includes both the original spoken text as well as recitatives by Ernest Guiraud and the following sections: •Scène et pantomime N° 2 (Attention! Chut!
