As a work commissioned by Ensemble Reconsil taking South Africa as its theme, this composition conjures up a fantasy landscape by means of its symbolic musical language, its timbres and its quotations from the music of the country’s original, inhabitants as well as that of European newcomers. From the outset my two vocal versions of Mozart orchestral works were conceived as twins. Both models shared not only key of C minor, but the fact that they were composed towards the end of Mozart's life seemed to suggest they were predestined to be arranged as a pair; and finally, their formal structure and, above all, the quotation of a cantus firmus in each piece seemed to bind these two works together. It was more difficult to consider which text was now suitable to render vocally what previously was an orchestral movement. Naturally it should stand out and textually the movement should be raised to another level. The answer was to use another language here. Therefore, I chose the texts Kyrie eleison and Agnus Dei, i.e., the opening and concluding texts of the Ordinary of the Mass. For a performance of both vocal versions in concert I suggest joining them by playing Mozart's great F minor Fantasy K. 608 as an instrumental intermezzo between them. Following the death of his mother in 1888, a depressed Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) decided to take a trip to his favorite destination, North Africa, travelling to Ceylon, then to Alexandria and Cairo over the period of several months. While he was in Egypt, he composed his fantasia for piano and orchestra, AFRICA, Op. 89. Dedicated to pianist Marie-Aimée Roger-Miclos, it premiered on October 25, 1891, with the dedicatee playing the solo, and the work was an immediate success both at the premiere and after, which pleased Saint-Saëns a great deal to the point that he considered AFRICA a signature work. Borrowing themes and techniques from North African music, the fantasy draws on material he heard in Algeria and Egypt, offering an exotic sound to those listening in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This concertante is notable also as one of the first works to be recorded with the composer as soloist, with a surviving 1904 recording with Saint-Saëns at the piano. Based on traditional Easter chants Fantasia di Pasqua is a tremendous work to feature four of your players in a religiously inspired work. Often this work is performed in church concerts or religious situations and, as such, the composer suggests that the quartet may be utilised performing from two ‘galleries’. This creates a wonderful double-choir effect that befits the Renaissance-like style of such great composers as Gabrieli. A truly inspired work to bring a touch of Renaissance class to your concerts.

In Fantasia di Pasqua speelt het (koper)kwartet een cruciale rol. De componist raadt aan dit kwartet vanuit een galerij te laten spelen: de zo gecreëerde dubbelkorigheid past bij de enigszins renaissancistische stijl van hetwerk. De gebruikte koraalmelodieën worden alle - veelal dansrijk - door het kwartet uitgevoerd in diverse cadansen, die mede door de dubbelkorigheid resulteren in een levendige en afwisselende uitvoering. Het kwartet hoeft nietper se te bestaan uit twee trompetten (cornetten) en twee trombones, maar kan naar believen worden samengesteld.

In seiner Fantasia di Pasqua verwendete Michael Bilkes traditionelle Osterlieder. Ein Quartett spielt hier eine entscheidende Rolle. Dies kann ein Blech- und/oder Holzbläserquartett sein, möglich ist auch ein Posaunenchor (der Komponist gibt hierzu Tipps). In Kirchen kommt die Fantasie besonders schön zur Geltung, wenn das Quartett von der Empore herab spielt. Der so kreierte Doppelchor-Effekt passt ausgezeichnet zum Renaissance ähnlichen Stil und verspricht eine sehr lebhafte und abwechslungsreiche Aufführung.

Fantasia di Pasqua est une fantaisie basée sur des mélodies chorales pascales, issues de la Renaissance. Un quatuor (cuivres/bois) joue un rôle primordial dans le développement de la pièce. La musique pascale étant essentiellement destinée être interprétée dans un lieu de culte, le compositeur préconise de placer le quatuor sur le balcon. L’effet de double chœur ainsi créé donne la pièce un caractère varié et divertissant.
