Questa storia, ambientata a Foggia tra gli anni Trenta e gli anni Sessanta, descrive le cause poco chiare della morte di un carrettiere avvenuta nell’imminenza dell’8 settembre 1934, giorno della visita in città di Benito Mussolini. Narra anche di una setta segreta e del suo fondatore, collezionista e studioso delle celebri stele daune, capolavori dei secoli VII-V a.C.; narra dei bombardamenti angloamericani che devastarono la città nel 1943. Nel racconto appaiono fugacemente anche Giuseppe Ungaretti, Luciano Bianciardi e Carlo Levi, che da Foggia passarono in tempi differenti e non omisero di lasciarne un ricordo scritto. E vi appare, infine, un testimone oculare dei fatti, che scava negli anni della propria adolescenza, alla ricerca di immagini, notizie e conferme circa quella morte. Sullo sfondo la Daunia: terra di una magnificenza innocente e selvaggia, misteriosa e ostile a un tempo.
