During his stay in America (September 1892 April 1895) Dvorák filled his sketchbooks with thematic concepts many of which he used soon after in the compositions he created there; others he retained unused. In the summer of 1894 he interrupted his American stay and spent most of the holidays at his favourite retreat in the village of Vysoká u Pr brame. In his moments of rest in his beloved Czech countryside the composer was struck with the idea to create a number of trifles for Piano and for these he used some of the thematic material from his recent two-year stay over the ocean. Thus began the cycle which he only later called?Humoresques? and which was published by Simrock immediately in the autumn of 1894. The seventh Humoresque was soon published in arrangements for all kinds of instruments and became one of his most popular pieces ever. The publication is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of the Works of Anton n Dvorák.

Among the best of Jean Sibelius’ oeuvre are his 1917 compositions the Humoresques. This fabulous and charming concerto was divided into two groups for publication Opus 87 and Opus 89 and demonstrates his sublime skill with the Violin. He used a considerably smaller Orchestra accompaniment to the Violin in the second group but maintained the subtlety of depth and texture. Though there are traditional elements to all parts of this opus Humoresque No. 4 harks back to the past the most reminiscent of the delicacy of mid-nineteenth century musical miniatures. Virtuosic and challenging the soloist has the opportunity to indulge in a more traditionallyexhibitionistic display. This work features a seperate Violin part with a Piano reduction of the String Orchestra by Karl Ekman.

Among the best of Jean Sibelius’ oeuvre are his 1917 compositions The Humoresques. This fabulous and charming concerto was divided into two groups for publication Opus 87 and Opus 89 and demonstrates his sublime skill with the Violin. He uses a considerably smaller Orchestra accompaniment to the Violin in the second group but maintains the subtlety of depth and texture. The opening bars of the Fifth Humoresque act as a continuation of the minor tonality that dominated the previous two pieces but the music soon reverts into a warmer major mood. Op.89 No.3 is the highlight of this group and one of Sibelius' most immediately compelling creations.

The Cantilène is based on a melody of the 18th century, probably by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736), popular in several countries with different texts: 'Que ne suis-je la fougère', 'Bonne nuit les petits', 'Adieu, pauvre carnaval', 'San Pantzar', 'Wa habibi', among others. The Humoresque is a varied rondo using the characteristic tonalities of the txistu (a basque flute with three holes) : F major, D minor, C major, A minor, B flat major, G minor, Eb major, C minor, Ab major and F minor. / Flûte Et Piano

In the summer of 1894 Anton n Dvo ák interrupted his stay in America in order to spend his holidays back in his homeland of Bohemia. During those happy weeks he wrote his eight Humoresques for piano. But this music is not by nomeans as ?Bohemian? as one might suppose. We know that Dvo ák had already sketched some of the material for these pieces in New York and there are also indications that the composer initially considered writing a series ofScottish dances. In other words these are thoroughly international pieces with an inflexion all of their own. And they are of a medium level of difficulty enabling pianists of all ages to discover a lot more than just thefamous catchy tune of no. 7. This Henle Urtext edition is based on the first print which the editors have carefully checked against the autograph.

Ursula Mamlok was born in Berlin in 1923, but was forced to emigrate via Ecuador to New York in 1939 because of her Jewish descent. In 2006 she returned to the city where she was born.In about three minutes, the small and charming two-part piece Kontraste [Contrasts] for oboe and harp captivates with clarity and limitation to the essentials. The name says it all: A lively humoresque is followed by a rather delicate, even almost melancholy second movement which is headed 'largo e mesto'. The composition was written in 2009/10 as a birthday present for the Swiss oboist - and this work's dedicatee - Heinz Holliger (and his wife, the harpist Ursula Holliger). / Hautbois Et Piano
