'for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain'for junior-upper voice SSSA Choir and Double SATB Choir a cappella (Score)Commissioned by the National Youth Choirs of Great BritainText is by Arthur W. E. O'Shaughnessy, adapted by Jessica Duchen.Composer's NoteWhen the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain requested a short piece for their gala concert at Birmingham's Symphony Hall, I was particularly excited about the prospect of writing for 300 singers. A recent research trip to Estonia resulted in somewhat of a revelation: having heard and seen their world-renowned choirs in action (literally!) has resulted in We are the Music-Makers having the less mainstream 'surround-sound' of upper voices/junior choir at the back and sides of the audience and a further stereophonic double-choir on stage. This poem was sent to me by Tim Williams (my ex Head of English at school), and immediately seemed to fit this occasion. This text has already been set magnificently by Elgar, so partly to avoid any kind of comparison and also to bring its timeless message up to date, I asked my poet friend Jessica Duchen to give it a sligtly more contemporary feel.A poem about global music-making (which ties in with the NYCGB's recent World-Music CD), it speaks about humankind, nation to nation, and the mention of Babel inspiring a 'speakng of tongues' effect by using as many different international words for 'music' as possible as an accompaniment (not an easy task, as many of them are similar to our own word!). These are: French (Musique), Romanian (Muzica), Swahili (Mahewa), Polish (Muzka), Estonian (Muusika), German (Muzik), Japanese (Ongaku), and Spanish (Música). / Choeur Mixte (SSAATTBB) A Cappella

Moving dramatic text; haunting melody – John Parker and Lee Dengler paint a vivid picture of Christ's arrest and trial during which He never tried to save himself or to deny the charges against Him. The power of Jesus'silence during those events is heard and felt in Parker's strong text and Dengler's passionate music. “Not a Word Did He Speak” is an emotional portrayal of the last days which will greatly impact your Lenten or HolyWeek service.

Standards for Tenor Sax-Glenn Zottola is best known as a brilliant swinging trumpeter who occasionally doubles on alto sax. On this special project he is heard as a talented tenor saxophonist who draws on the sounds and styles of Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins finding his own voice somewhere in between. Glenn sounds quite at home playing with the vintage rhythm sections yet gives the music his own special twist. We've transposed Glenn's every note enabling the at-home player to study and emulate these improvised solos. The sheet music also contains the original melody line of these classic standards plus chords and an alto sax part so that both Bb and Eb saxes can play these great standardswith equal enjoyment with an all-star rhythm section. Includes: Body and Soul · Embraceable You · Oh Lady Be Good · You Go to My Head · and more.

The atmosphere of the Wild West is caught in a striking and most imaginative way by young composer Andreas Schulte in this work. A caravan of gold- and fortuneseekers launch themselves into a big adventure and begin their rush westward. The first movement desciribes these first days of buoyancy and optimism in a crisp march. Near the campfire the pioneers rest themselves and the music expresses feelings of romance nostalgia for the past and hopes for the future. A wistful melody very characteristically communicates these feelings. Relaxation takes place in the third movement which is a musical characterization of a rodeo and its attendant festivities. It is obvious that sometimes something goes wrong and this aspect can also be heard. Nevertheless the valiant rider wins in the end. With a flashback to the beginning the journey is completed musically thus giving the composition a dignified finale. Let the mystic Wild West entrance you. (Wagons ho ....!!)

'Bahumba' is a nonsense word but a no-nonsense selection for concert band. The word stems from a sound composer Peter Sciaino heard coming from an idling car. The engine, clearly having issues, had an 'uneven' gate or pulse. He mindlessly heard the word 'Bahumba' within the sounds emerging from the struggling motor. Just like an engine, an ensemble can attain a smooth groove even if 'uneven' in terms of pulse. While the percussionists are often asked to provide this groove under the melodic lines, they ultimately break out with a feature that essentially places a percussion ensemble within the context of a concert band piece. The Yiddish word ‘Klezmer’ has been derived from the Old Hebrew words ‘Kley’ (tool instrument) and ‘Zemer’ (song singing making music).Klezmer is the traditional music of Jews from Eastern Europe.Yiddish musicians (Klezmorim) were regularly invited to come and play at Yiddish weddings as well as several other Jewish celebrations and festive occasions. Despite its close connection with traditional Eastern European folk music Klezmer music has succeeded in preserving its distinctive Jewish character. ‘Klezmer Discovery’ is a voyage of discovery through the richly varied music of the Jewish people from Eastern Europe. The introduction consists of a number of motives from differenttraditional melodies (a Mitzve Tenzel and L’cha Dodi) followed by a melody in 3/8th time (Kandel’s Hora). This dance melody originally came from Bessarabia (present-day Moldavia) and was taken along to America by Jewish musicians round 1900. Subsequently ‘Der Terk in Amerika’ a composition by famous clarinet player Naftule Brandwein can be heard. A number of fast cheerful dance melodies (bulgars) form the finale of ‘Klezmer Discovery’ (Lebedyk un Freylekh Lomir sich iberbetn and Sherele).

Angel View by Juliana Hodkinson scored for seven or more performers and electronics. 'Angel View is an assemblage of urban and musical debris somewhere between a wordless live radio play enacted film soundtrack and instrumental theatre. Chiseling cement falling debris scraping cutlery breaking glass criss-crossing cables squealing tram-wheels an upturned bicycle a grid of cables a travel souvenir a shop window a revolving carousel a brace of monkeys a wall under siege a dining table laid for an ancestral dinner – it is a sonic bazaar. Made up of over 20 parts each designed to overlap the work’s architecture is full of of non-sequiturs and arbitrary cross-relations between imagined streets intersecting and running parallel reflecting the surrealism of everyday life described in Walter Benjamin’s Einbahnstrasse and still present in the contemporary dilemmas and opportunities of Berlin today. All this is heard as if from an aerial perspective perhaps the Victory Column where angels sit in Wings of Desire from where Berlin below is observed as a series of tragedies.' Juliana Hodskinson

Blues Guitar Guitar notes and tablatures [Sheet music + Audio access] Grossman's Guitar Workshop
Par . The musical appeal of the Blues, as they began to be heard in the early tw...(+)
Par . The musical appeal of the Blues, as they began to be heard in the early twentieth century, was so infectious that musicians with open minds and ears were drawn to it as soon as they heard it. And that appeal crossed the racial and ethnic divides that characterized American society. So it was, that even before African American guitarists were recorded playing fingerstyle blues guitar, their white neighbors had already begun learning the music?listening to, watching, and imitating the musicians whose music they so admired. And what these white musicians ended up expressing in their own playing and singing was not simply imitation, but their own reconfiguration of what their models did, played in accordance with their own senses of rhythm, phrasing and how to sing the music. In Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar, author John Miller offers transcriptions, in tablature and standard notation, of twenty-eight pieces by these white fingerstyle blues players, taken from recordings made in the period 1926?1970. Some of the featured musicians in the book, like Sam McGee, Frank Hutchison, Maybelle Carter, Hobart Smith, and Roscoe Holcomb are pretty well known, but the tunes by more obscure players like Debs Mays, Lake Howard, or Lester McFarland certainly don?t suffer by comparison, and in many instances are spectacular. The pieces have been chosen for variety, too?you?ll encounter pieces played in C, E, and A in standard tuning, as well as songs in Open G, Open D tunings and an exotic offshoot of Open G tuning. Downloadable links to all of the original performances from which the transcriptions were made come with the book, so you can get the sound of the tunes in your head. The musicians in Hillbilly Fingerstyle Blues Guitar gravitated towards the Blues because the music spoke to them so strongly that they felt compelled to make it part of their own musical language. And they did just that. These performances are strong and worthwhile in their own right, but they?ll also show you how you can honor those who have inspired you by singing and playing in your own voice. And that?s an important lesson to learn. Includes access to online audio. / Date parution : 2021-11-03/ Recueil / Guitare

Songs Without Words is a set of three short pieces each inspired by a classic t...(+)
Songs Without Words is a set of three short pieces each inspired by a classic twentieth century poem. There is an underlying theme of 'School'.1. School BellThe music urgently moves forward within an anxiously breathless waltz lest we be late for school. Originally inspired by Eleanor Farjeon's famous poem 'Nine O'clock Bell' where pupils hustle and bustle to school in the morning: Some of them scurrying others not worrying Carelessly trudging or anxiously hurrying.2. A Blitz of a BoyWith an affectionate nod to Charles Causley's sad tale about 'Timothy Winters' who 'hasn't heard of the welfare state'. He sleeps ona sack on the kitchen floor and they say there aren't boys like him anymore.Although the music is laden with pathos there is insuppressible energy too portraying that lovable 'Blitz of a Boy'! 3. A Lesson You'll Never Forget!Roger McGough's black poem 'The Lesson' was the catalyst for this piece. The teacher (and later even the headmaster) set upon a notoriously rowdy class with various lethal weapons systematically murdering all the pupils! He picked on a boy who was shouting and throttled him then and there then garrotted the girl behind him (the one with grotty hair). The baroque style recitative passages represent the school 'establishment' and are contrasted ludicrously with savage harmonic 'stabs' and terrifyingly anxious 'chase scenes' around the class room; this poem is not for the squeamish!

The Seven Last Words of Christ Hob. XX/1B-When Haydn stopped in Passau on his second journey to England he heard a vocal version of his own orchestral work The Seven Last Words. It had been made by the Kapellmeister at Passau cathedral Joseph Friebert and Haydnwas quite impressed except: 'I believe I could have done the voice parts better'. He acquired a copy and set about making his own vocal version taking over most of the text. Haydn particularly liked his own vocal work and itwas also enthusiastically received by his contemporaries. The study edition is based on the volume (HN 5822) published as part of the Complete Edition by the Joseph Haydn Institute in Cologne.
